Department of Caffeine @ Duxton Road

In recent time, it seems like Singapore is gradually turning into a little Melbourne with new cafes opening in every corners of Singapore. Among these wave of new coffee culture in Singapore, Department of Caffeine (DOC) has gained a group of followers and fan base with the coffee and food. The cafe located at the start of Duxton Road occupying a corner unit was rather unnoticeable. If not that I have known the address beforehand I would have missed it.

The peaceful stretch of Duxton Road was quickly interrupted by the buzzing activities inside the cafe where I pushed open the entry. It was taken back by the vibe inside the cafe that is packed to the brim. It was like stepping into another world.

Lavendar & Honey Teacake 2/5

The coffee at Department of Caffeine uses coffee beans from Five Senses. I had the Latte ($5) which I did not enjoy. While the coffee is rich and strong, I wanted more milk for my latte which was definitely missing. The Lavendar & Honey Teacake ($5) was a turn off with the dry texture. The overly perfumed lavendar flavour of the cake made it tasted artificial.

Buttermilk Waffles 2.5/5

I also tried the Buttermilk Waffles ($13.50) that was topped with butter rum banana and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. While the waffle was thick and fluffy, it was limp and not crispy. It felt that the waffle had sat for too long after it had been made.

During my visit, all the eggs item on the menu was crossed out. My friend checked and the waiter replied that they have run out of eggs. I would have love to try the brunch items and have a more complete review of the hype of this place. Maybe I should drop by the cafe another time when I am in the vicinity.

1) Alight at Outram MRT station. Take Exit H. Walk straight along New Bridge Road to Kreta Ayer Road. Turn right onto Kreta Ayer Road and walk to the end. Cross the road and turn left on Neil Road. From Neil Road walk to Duxton Road. Journey time about 23 minutes.

2) Alight at Tanjong Pagar MRT station. Take Exit A. Walk to Orchid Hotel. At Orchid Hotel turn right onto Tanjong Pagar Road. Cross the road to the opposite side of Tanjong Pagar Road. Walk along Tanjong Pagar Road to Duxton Hill. Turn left onto Duxton Hill and then turn right on Duxton Road. Journey time about 23 mins.

Seafood Park @ Clementi Street 12

The plan was to go to Sunset Way to check out what's new at the area but there was nothing interesting. Not sure why but somehow the area has lost its vibe and feels kind of deserted and boring. Skipping the restaurants, I went around the corner to Seafood Park, a Zi Char stall located in the Food Park coffeeshop.

Sliced Beef with Spring Onion 3.5/5

The Sliced Beef with Spring Onion ($10) may not be of premium quality, it still was quite tender and flavourful.

Stir Fried Kailan 3.5/5

The simple Stir Fried Kailan ($7) with garlic was surprisingly pretty well executed. Not too oily and cooked to a nice crunchy bite.

Claypot Crab Beehoon 2.8/5

I was craving of crab beehoon lately so I ordered the Claypot Crab Beehoon to try. I could not remember the exact cost but I think its about $28. While the crab is firm and sweet, the beehoon was disappointment. The beehoon was dry and it did not manage to infuse the crab essence. All I could taste in the beehoon was soy sauce.
