IMG_2093

BOTANY, nestled in Robertson Quay, has undergone a refreshing transformation into a warm, botanical-themed space. By day, it serves as an all-day dining spot; by evening, it becomes an intimate venue for any occasion. Founder Cassandra Riene commits to providing a diverse menu that caters to various dietary preferences, including meat, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with the outdoor area overlooking the scenic river, and ideal for diners with pets. Indoors, a cosy, laid-back ambience prevails, enhanced by a chill playlist.

Mocktails

We kicked off our meal with refreshing albeit sweet mocktails: Dancing Petals ($12), featuring a blend of assam tea, lemon, raspberry, and honey, and Younger Days ($12), made with apple juice, cinnamon, and rosemary.

IMG_2060

IMG_2083
Gochujang Cauli 3.5/5

First up was the Gochujang Cauli ($15), lightly battered cauliflower coated in a sweet gochujang sauce with spring onions and sesame seeds. I personally found the sauce too sweet and a bit overpowering, and I thought a lighter touch would have enhanced the dish.

IMG_2072
Otah Fritters 4.2/5

Next, we had the Otah Fritters ($15), which were a standout. Slightly crisp on the outside, the fritters revealed a tender otah interior with chunks of fish and prawns, perfectly spiced for a satisfying bite.

IMG_2064

IMG_2091
Scallop Truffle Capellini 4/5

For mains, we started with the Scallop Truffle Capellini ($29), a chilled capellini dish dressed in truffle salsa and sakura ebi, topped with torched scallops and salmon roe for delightful pops of briny savouriness.

IMG_2079

IMG_2103
‘Hae Mee’ Pasta 4.2/5

We then tried the 'Hae Mee' Pasta ($29), BOTANY's twist on our local prawn noodles. While I thought the spaghetti could be a touch more al dente, the pasta was bathed in an umami-rich prawn bisque and crowned with a torched tiger prawn and tobiko.

IMG_2039

IMG_2105
Impossible Rendang Meatball with Mash 4.2/5

A pleasant surprise was the Impossible Rendang Meatball with Mash ($22). The Impossible meatballs, simmered in an aromatic rendang sauce, paired wonderfully with the creamy, buttery mash, making it a hearty plant-based option.

IMG_2124

IMG_2128
Signature Basque Cheesecake 4.2/5

We couldn't resist the Signature Basque Cheesecake ($12) for dessert, and the decadent piece did not disappoint. It was super cheesy and just slightly creamy in texture.

Overall, our lunch experience at BOTANY was delightful, with friendly service. We recommend making a reservation, especially if you prefer the cosy indoor seating.

ToMo Cafe @ Upper Thomson - Popular Joo Chiat Cafe with Insta-Worthy Specialty Drinks Opens New Outlet in Upper Thomson

IMG_1508

ToMo Cafe opened its third outlet at Upper Thomson on 8 October 2024, following its success in Joo Chiat and Neil Road with popular, Instagram-worthy drinks and hearty, Japanese-style food.

IMG_1520

This new location will introduce outlet-exclusive dishes, including rice bowls and handcrafted burgers.

IMG_1519

To celebrate its opening, the first 100 customers in October will receive a free cloud drink, with November offering free ‘chuffles’ to the first 100 diners. Both promotions are valid with any purchase made.

IMG_1510
Iced Houjicha Goma Cloud Latte 4.2/5

From their list of speciality drinks, I was immediately attracted to the Iced Houjicha Goma Cloud Latte ($8), which combines a slightly nutty base of houjicha and a creamy, rich layer of black sesame cloud cream. I thoroughly enjoyed this combination, but it's best enjoyed quickly.

IMG_1515
Iced Matcha Strawberry Cloud Latte 4/5

The Iced Matcha Strawberry Cloud Latte ($8) is another crowd favourite, combining matcha and a base of strawberry bits, topped with dairy-free strawberry cream. This was earthy and sweet. Other matcha options include the Iced Matcha Cloud Latte ($8) with sea salt dairy-free cream and the Kagoshima Matcha Latte ($7).

IMG_1516
Yuzuri Apple Fresca 3.8/5

For a refreshing non-coffee option, try the sparkling Yuzuri Apple Fresca ($7), made with Aomori apple, yuzu, and cherry blossom extract.

IMG_1512

IMG_1513
Tako Karaage 4/5

Starting with the Tako Karaage ($12), we enjoyed crunchy, battered octopus chunks paired with a tangy yuzu kosho mayo. Though the chunks could be more evenly battered, we still found it pretty addictive. The substantial portion is also great for sharing.

IMG_1511
Grilled Tiger Prawn Capellini 4/5

The cafe staff highly recommended the Grilled Tiger Prawn Capellini ($22). The hefty portion of capellini was tossed in a savoury mentaiko mayo sauce and topped with grilled prawns, ebiko and seaweed. I would recommend this as a sharing dish as the richness may get too heavy for one.

IMG_1514
Fish and Chip Burger 3.5/5

The Fish and Chip Burger offered a crispy tempura dory fillet with sour cream tartar, lettuce, and tomato. Unfortunately, the shoestring fries were undercooked during our visit, but we understand it was an issue with the fryer, which will be quickly fixed.

IMG_1517
Homemade Tiramisu 3.8/5

For sweets, we decided on ToMo's Homemade Tiramisu ($9), which has a jar of espresso-infused ladyfingers layered with homemade mascarpone cream. You can enhance it with a shot of Baileys or Kahlua for an extra $4.

We appreciated the openness of the kitchen staff to feedback and look forward to seeing improvements once the cafe officially opens its doors.

Surrey Hills Grocer @ Raffles City - Indulge in Limited-Time Menu for a Hearty Chinese New Year Feast

IMG_1969

This February, Surrey Hills Grocer at Raffles City has 2 gastronomic collaborations going on - with British pop artist Philip Colbert till 18 February 2024, as well as with a local home-based chef Kenneth Loh, widely known as "Chef Ken", till 27 February 2024.

IMG_1943
Philip Colbert Lobster Roll 4.5/5

Philip Colbert x Surrey Hills collaboration - Philip Colbert is a Scottish-born British artist with a global following for his distinctive cartoon lobster persona. Surrey Hills Grocer drew inspiration from Philip's artwork to celebrate his inaugural large-scale solo exhibition in Singapore from 6 January to 3 March 2024 and launched an exclusive "Philip Colbert Lobster Roll" ($42). The brioche bun was soft and buttery, loaded with chunks of fresh Canadian lobster meats that were creamy with Surrey Hills Grocer's special lobster dressing. I like the slight tang in the dressing. Accompanying the roll was some lightly spiced zucchini fries coated with parmesan cheese.

IMG_1922
Golden Nectar

Surrey Hill Grocer has also launched 2 festive drink options for this Chinese New Year celebration. One of which is "Golden Nectar" ($25), a concoction of Kiku-Masamune white peach liqueur, white wine, orange juice, and cranberry juice, complete with a slice of Medallion bakkwa.

IMG_1961
Kyoto Style Miso Pork Rib 5/5

The Surrey Hills Grocer x Chef Ken collaboration menu features Festive Flavours of Chef Ken's three new savoury dishes. Inspired by his recent trip to Kyoto, the "Kyoto Style Miso Pork Rib" ($32) is almost like a feast served on a single plate - slow-braised miso pork ribs and daikon piled over scrambled eggs that blanketed over Niigata rice, which is wholesome with edamame and charred onions. Notably recognised for his Taiwanese braised pork rice bowl, his culinary mastery over pork is also showcased in this dish. The fork-tender pork was tantalising with the flavours of the miso sauce, which also provided a mouthwatering gravy for the homely omu rice.

IMG_1980
Seafood Udon in Crab Broth 4/5

Seafood Udon in Crab Broth ($42) comes luxurious with fresh local farmed mussels, sea prawns, seared Hokkaido scallops, chikuwa, and wakame seaweed. The milky crab broth had a good depth of crustacean flavour, accentuated with savoury sea grapes. I reckon a thinner udon would better suit the broth.

IMG_1990
Spicy Basil Lala Capellini 4.8/5

Spicy Basil Lala Capellini ($28) is a well-executed dish that surprises with a harmonic blend of East and West ingredients. The al dente capellini carried the delightful aromatic blend of aged hua tiao wine, garlic, clam stock, chilli, and basil.

IMG_2002
Seafood Shashuka 3/5

If you are here for a celebratory brunch, spruce up your meal with one of their regular items - a hearty Seafood Shashuka ($42). Loaded with flavourful beef sausages, potatoes, oozy eggs, and seafood, I loved how robust and heady the gravy was. While the seafood didn't necessarily elevate the shakshuka experience, it did amp up the luxe factor for a Chinese New Year Feast.

IMG_2012

If you still have room for something sweeter, Banana Bread ($18) will provide a little comforting, sweet ending to your meal.

Alice Boulangerie @ Icon Village (Tanjong Pagar) - More Than Just Your Artisan French Bakery with Classic French Patisserie and Viennoiseries

Photo 1-7-23, 1 10 02 PM

Photo 1-7-23, 12 18 13 PM

Nestled within Tanjong Pagar Icon Village, artisan cafe Alice Boulangerie offers a variety of bread, cakes, croissants, and French pastries freshly baked in-house on display. They have generated quite a buzz with their bi-coloured croissants since their launch in 2021, and fast forward years later, they have expanded to include a decadent range of breakfast, sides, and dinner mains in a full-fledged modern-euro menu.

Photo 1-7-23, 12 22 40 PM
Matcha Cream Latte 4.2/5, Ruby Oolong 4/5, Fruity Mojito 4/5

To kickstart the meal, we tried a few of their signature speciality drinks, such as the Matcha Cream Latte ($7.50), which features a smooth unsweetened matcha drink with a dollop of Chantilly cream atop, which added some sweetness to the drink. The result is a smooth and light matcha drink with a nice balance of bittersweetness and not too sweet. The Ruby Oolong ($7.50) consists of a mixture of strawberries, lychee and oolong tea which makes for an enjoyable light fruity tea. At the same time, the Fruity Mojito ($8.50) has a more tangy flavour profile with the addition of orange and lime and is extremely refreshing.

Photo 1-7-23, 12 25 18 PM
Scallop Ceviche 4/5

The Scallop Ceviche ($19) is paired with fresh Hokkaido scallops and refreshing yuzu gel, finished with a sweet and tangy ponzu sauce, the perfect bright starter to welcome your dinner with.

Photo 1-7-23, 12 33 33 PM
Charred Broccoli with Tobiko 3.8/5

The Charred Broccoli with Tobiko ($15) is flavoured with yuzu mayo and comes topped with pickled beetroot, bonito flakes and tobiko. However, the broccoli was a tad overly charred which lent a sharp bitterness to the vegetable and masked any other flavours in the dish.

Photo 1-7-23, 12 27 13 PM
Tiger Prawn Capellini 4.5/5

We tried the Tiger Prawn Capellini ($28), which features capellini topped with baked mentaiko tiger prawns. The pasta is nicely cooked to an al dente texture and has a robust prawn fragrance, having been cooked in a rich prawn broth, prawn oil and garlic. Notably, one of their most popular dishes in the restaurant, it has been a mainstay on their menu since day one.

Photo 1-7-23, 12 31 32 PM
Wagyu Beef Cheek Risotto 4/5

The Wagyu Beef Cheek Risotto ($36) consists of soft and fork-tender braised wagyu beef cheek in a creamy and fragrant butternut squash risotto. The pumpkin seeds and pistachio added a crunchy texture. However, we prefer it without the nuts for the dish to be more coherent - a soft, creamy, buttery dish that we will most definitely enjoy!

Photo 1-7-23, 1 12 13 PM
Yuzu Apple Tart 4/5, “Mushroom” 4.5/5, “Acorn” 4.2/5

Finally, we ended the meal on a sweet note with a signature trio of desserts. If you're a sour, fruity desserts fan, you will fall in love with the Apple Yuzu Tart. It features a homemade sweet tart filled with a tangy lemon Madeline, and hazelnut praline. It is topped with a juicy glazed yuzu and Granny Smith compote and finished with a refreshing Swiss meringue.

The "Mushroom" consists of a classic choux puff piped with gula Melaka Chantilly cream and coconut diplomat cream, complemented with chewy gula Melaka caramel. We enjoyed the smooth Gula Melaka cream that is not too sweet, encased in a light, crisp choux puff exterior.

The “Acorn” features a green chocolate shell with 32% white chocolate that reveals a layer of forage mousse, pistachio dacquoise, pistachio crunch with soft pistachio praline, and a homemade red fruit compote finished with pistachio mousse for differing textures and complimenting flavours.

PN Resto Bar @ Holland Village - Former Black Pearl Steakhouse, Renamed and Revamped Its Menu

IMG_8534

PN Resto Bar at Holland Village, formerly known as Black Pearl Steakhouse, has a revamped menu that encompasses a broader range of tapas and mains, including a list of wines and specially crafted cocktails.

IMG_8509
Canadian Pacific Live Oysters

We started with Canadian Pacific Live Oysters ($26/6pcs), which were plump and fresh, accompanied by a glass of House White.

IMG_8516
Angus Beef Cubes 2.8/5

For a place known for its steak, this plate of Angus Beef Cubes ($28) disappoints with unevenly cooked meat. Some of them were nicely sauteed, but most were chewy or tough.

IMG_8537
Grilled Barramundi Fillet 3.8/5

The mains fared much better. The Grilled Barramundi Fillet ($31) with mango salsa was served with crispy skin, with sautéed cherry tomato giving bursts of sweetness to the creamy white wine sauce.

IMG_8534
Ebi Sakura Capellini 4/5

Ebi Sakura Capellini ($27) with ikura never fails to please when done right - al dente capellini punctuated with savoury sakura ebi, with occasional bursts of briny saltiness from the ikura pearls.

IMG_8556
Red Velvet Molten Lava Cake 3/5

Our dessert was a Red Velvet Molten Lava Cake ($16). I love the almost-crusty layer of sponge cake but not so much on its sweetness. A more bittersweet chocolaty cake would have been more delectable.
