Taste Paradise & Paradise Teochew Seasonal Menu Launch Featuring Nostalgic Dishes

IMG_2720

Taste Paradise and Paradise Teochew have recently introduced a new seasonal menu from 4 March to 26 April 2024, showcasing classic Cantonese and Teochew dishes, respectively. Executive Chef Cheng Fa Kwan has curated six classic dishes for each restaurant, bringing his own heirloom recipes to the table that evoke a sense of nostalgia in every bite.

IMG_2723
Braised Vinegar Pork Trotter with Preserved Plum 4/5

At Taste Paradise, expect a blend of sweet and savoury flavours in their new seasonal menu. One of the key dishes is the Braised Vinegar Pork Trotter with Preserved Plum ($28, U.P. $46.80). This dish features a whole pork trotter slow-cooked for four hours at low heat in a vinegar sauce infused with spices, superior broth, and an addition of a Hong Kong plum. The pork trotter impressed me with its tender texture and the rich depth of flavours in the sauce. However, I prefer the sauce to have more acidity to counteract the heaviness of the trotter.

IMG_2701
Crisp-fried Sweet and Sour Dough Fritter stuffed with Prawn Paste 3.8/5

Next, we had another classic taste of Hong Kong - Crisp-fried Sweet and Sour Dough Fritter stuffed with Prawn Paste ($25.80, U.P. $28.80). Prawns are coated in a spiced dough and fried into golden fritters before being tossed with chunks of pineapple, capsicum and onions in a sweet-and-sour sauce. I appreciate that the fritters were pretty evenly coated with the sauce. This allowed them to maintain the crisp texture and prevent the sauce from overpowering the delicate prawn paste.

IMG_2728
Chinese Sausage and Preserved Olive Fried Rice 4.5/5

One of my favourites was the moreish Chinese Sausage and Preserved Olive Fried Rice served in a Casserole ($42.80, U.P. $48.80). The fried rice exhibited a satisfyingly firm texture, and the generous slices of Chinese cured sausage and liver sausage imparted an abundance of umami flavours, contributing to an enjoyable and textured experience.

IMG_2691
Teochew Style Crab and Prawn Congee 4.8/5

At Paradise Teochew, the focus is on lighter flavours as well as fresh and natural ingredients, particularly seafood. Highlights include Teochew Style Crab and Prawn Congee ($28, U.P. $68). This indulgent rice congee is prepared by slowly simmering whole shelled prawns and an entire crab, resulting in a relatively full-bodied broth. The seasoning was adeptly done, bringing out the natural sweetness of the seafood.

IMG_2685
Teochew Style Braised Pig’s Stomach with Duck Tongue 5/5

The menu also boasts a rare delight — Teochew Style Braised Pig's Stomach with Duck Tongue ($16.80, U.P. $18.80). This distinctive dish showcases tender slices of pig's stomach and duck's tongue stewed in a house-made superior sauce, elegantly served alongside soft braised tofu for added texture. The dish's execution was impeccable, presenting a clean and light taste that added to its overall appeal.

IMG_2714
Crisp-fried Duck with Mashed Yam 4.8/5

A definite crowd-pleaser on the menu is the Crisp-fried Duck with Mashed Yam ($39.80, U.P. $42). This dish features slices of duck meat enveloped in a layer of yam, deep-fried to achieve a crispy exterior while retaining tender meat. Each bite provided a satisfying mouthfeel, with succulent thick-cut duck meat complemented by fragrant mashed yam.

Yi Qian Private Dining @ Leng Kee Road - Hidden Restaurant Within A Business Centre, Serving Fine Cantonese And Teochew Fare

YiQianPrivateDining1

Yi Qian Private Dining is a new Chinese restaurant hidden within a nondescript business centre. Helming the kitchen is Chef Raymond, who has years of experience working at Golden Palace Singapore and Lei Garden Restaurant Hong Kong. The restaurant has an extensive menu ranging from Cantonese to Teochew Fare. Customers can even customise their menu upon the advance request of 3 days.

YiQianPrivateDining3
Crispy Prawn Fritters 4/5

A great appetiser to kick start the meal is the Crispy Prawn Fritter ($9.80). The thinly sliced prawn fritters are crispy and topped with sweet sakura prawns, deep-fried to golden perfection.

YiQianPrivateDining6
Stir-fried Shark Fin with Crabmeat served with Superior Stock in Teapot 3.8/5

A signature at Yi Qian is their Stir-fried Shark Fin with Crabmeat served with Superior Stock in Teapot ($68). It is a 2-part dish whereby the shark fin is separated from the superior stock. To enjoy the dish, have a bite of the shark fin and sip the superior soup brewed for over 6 hours using old chicken bones and ham.

YiQianPrivateDining9
Teochew Crispy Yam & Prawn Omelette 4.2/5

The Teochew Crispy Yam & Prawn Omelette ($24) comes in a disc shape, generously studded with hearty yam wedges and fresh prawns. I love the crispy and fluffiness accentuated by the flavourful yam.

YiQianPrivateDining8

YiQianPrivateDining12
Pig's Stomach and Chicken in Pepper Soup 4.2/5

The Pig's Stomach and Chicken in Pepper Soup ($108) requires pre-order at least one day in advance. A whole kampong chicken is wrapped in a pig's stomach and boiled in a white pepper soup. It is a pot of nourishing soup boiled for 4 hours under high heat with a myriad of spices.

YiQianPrivateDining14
Sizzling Kai Lan in Claypot 4.2/5

Nowadays, restaurants like to serve their vegetables in claypot, such as the Sizzling Kai Lan in Claypot ($22). They are stir-fried with belachan and shrimps. It's simple yet irresistibly mouth-watering, with the kailan retaining a delectable crunch.

YiQianPrivateDining18
Wok Hei Fried Kway Teow with Diced Kai Lan and Preserved Radish 4/5

A staple Teochew dish is the Wok Hei Fried Kway Teow with Diced Kai Lan and Preserved Radish ($18). The flat rice noodles are tossed in a hot wok with crunchy preserved radish, kailan and shrimps, infused with the wok's breath for a smokey finish.

YiQianPrivateDining20
Sugar Encrusted Deep Fried Yam Sticks 4.5/5

Surprisingly, my favourite item is the Sugar Encrusted Deep Fried Yam Sticks ($20). It is the best version I have eaten so far. It has a sweet layer of sugar coating with an exterior crisp, followed by a soft and moist interior packed with the beautiful yam flavour.

While I see a glimpse of excellence in some dishes, there are misses too. I felt I had not tried the best of the restaurant yet. I probably have to return to try more of his dishes to get a final verdict.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Top 10 Home Based Businesses (HBB) That Are Worth Ordering

HBB1

COVID-19 pandemic has affected many people's livelihood. Instead of waiting for the best for the world to turn better, many people have taken a brave and significant step forward to change and adapt to the new norm. This sees the birth of many Home Based Business (HBB), putting their baking and cooking skills to good use, supplementing some incomes for the family.

I have the chance to try a couple of these home-based businesses during this period, and here is a list of my top 10 home-based business that is worth ordering and trying.

A Sweet Mess

ASweetMess11

A Sweet Mess caught my attention for their Rainbow Ondeh Ondeh. They are soft and chewy, with oozing gula melaka in it. Importantly, it is not using those syrup type. She actually bought the gula melaka in a block, hand grate them and cook them. Their Banana Cake, Pandan Gula Melaka Cupcake, and Basque Burnt Cheese Cake received many raving reviews too.

Any Hao Bao

AnyHaoBao6

To keep her parents occupied during circuit breaker, Francesca started AnyHaoBao for her parents to share their love of cooking. My favourite is their homecooked herbal chicken and achar. You get a whole chicken, cooked to tender. The herbal taste is relatively mild, so it should be acceptable to children. Interestingly it comes with two hard-boiled eggs. They also made Kong Bak Pau, but this is seasonal.

Edibles Bake Shop

EdiblesBakeShop9

My close friends will know that I am not really into dessert, hence for Edibles Bake Shop to make it my list, it has definitely won me over. The cupcakes are not overly sweet, well balanced and most importantly, very delicious. Serene is a very talented baker and does check out her beautiful cake. She can also customise cakes for that special occasion.

Hei Piah Family

HeiPiahFamily4

The hardest-hit industry during the pandemic is the aviation sector. During this period, pilots and cabin crews are all grounded. Laura, an SQ cabin crew and her fashion designer husband, started Hei Piah Family to share her mother-in-law Prawn Fritter recipe. I tried their prawn fritter and fell in love. It is crispy on the outside and pillowy inside.

Lady Boss Soy Sauce Chicken

LadyBossSoySauceChicken4

Lady Boss Soy Sauce Chicken is a home base business started by Sandra Sim. She is one of the owners of Sum Yi Tai. Before I tried the soy sauce chicken, I have already heard my raving reviews. When I finally get to taste it, I was really impressed. Well marinated and infused with the fragrant soy sauce, the chicken was also tender and juicy. Not forgetting that super power chilli sauce that comes with it.

Lor Bak Mama

LorBakMaMa1

Lor Bak Mama is started by Christine Yue, who has zero income when she has to closed her nail salons during the circuit breaker. Encouraged by her family and closed friends who have tried her lor bak, I am glad that I can get to savour this delicious braised pork belly that is cooked until melt in the mouth, absorbing the braising sauce that is packed with robustness.

There are Kaya Butter Roll, Blueberry Hill, Brownie Cheesecake and Chocolate Hazel Royal. For the upcoming festive seasons, it is rolling up a new pastry box. Do keep a lookout.

Noni Home Made Cooking

Noni12

Noni caught my eyes for offering authentic Indonesia food. I tried both their Nasi Lemak and Nasi Liwet. I personally love the Nasi Liwet as this is my first time have aromatic rice with anchovies wrapped with banana leaves, cooked over the fire. It even comes with a whole grilled chicken leg and tofu.

Slab Some Ribs

SlabSomeRibs45

Affected by the pandemic, Elaine, a sales manager for a local airline has been on furlough, and on a good month may get to work up to two days a week. With the inconsistent workdays and significant financial impact, she started Slab Some Ribs to supplement her income. I have known many home-based businesses but selling pork ribs probably is the first. What's more she has an interesting flavour like Kicap Manis. I heard she is introducing a new Korean flavour for the upcoming festive season.

TwoBakeBoys5

Another home-based business started by an SQ cabin crew is Two Bake Boys. There are a lot of home bakers during this period and mostly focus on bakes such as brownies, cookies and burnt cheesecakes. Two Bake Boys is different, it is probably the first HBB that offers Authentic Thai Tea Crepe Cake. Currently, it has already expanded its menu with new flavours such as Matcha, Strawberry and Tiramisu.

Tian Cheng Food (天成美食) @ Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre

IMG_3294ed

Having been to Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre numerous time, this is my first time visiting Tian Cheng Food (天成美食). The stall sells a lot of Chinese light bites and snacks. What caught my attention was the fried to golden brown prawn fritter.

IMG_1457ed
Prawn Fritter 4/5

The Prawn Fritter ($1.50) is deep fried to golden brown with a whole prawn on it. It is to be eaten together with the shell. Do be careful if children is eating it as the shell of the prawn head may cut the tongue if one is not careful.

IMG_1455ed
Prawn Fritter 4/5

You can ask the stall owner to cut the prawn fritter, so that it is easier for consumption. I like to have it together with the chilli sauce. The prawn which can be eaten with the shell is crispy giving it a contrasting texture on top of the pillowy, doughy base, almost like bread.

IMG_1450ed
Prawn Fritter 4/5

The prawn fritter may not be delicacy but it definitely is one of those local snack or if you want to call it street food that is comforting and enjoyable.

Rumah Sayang @ JEM

IMG_3141ed

When I was told that there is a popular Peranakan cafe at the basement of JEM, I was a bit puzzled because I didn't release I have seen one during my previous visits. Fortunately a food trail lead me to Rumah Sayang, a Peranakan theme cafe solving the mystery. No wonder I have missed it because the name of the Halal restaurant did not suggest that it is a Peranakan cafe. Moreover the cafe sells a mixed of Nasi Padang, local cooked dishes, local snacks and kuehs on top of some signature Nyonya dishes. Nevertheless, the cafe is extremely popular with the shoppers. It is one of the busiest eatery at the shopping mall constantly streaming in with diners.

IMG_3143ed
Tahu Goreng 4/5

Upon being seated, we started with a plate of Tahu Goreng ($3.50). Crispy on the outside and smooth inside, the texture enjoyed to the fullest with the delectable sweet and spicy nutty sauce.

IMG_3146ed
Curry Fish Head 4.5/5

A must order at Rumah Sayang is their Curry Fish Head ($18.90). The fresh fish head is accompanied with a delicious curry gravy that is rich and creamy while the spice level could be accepted by majority. I like that it is also served with a lot of vegetables so my meal would not be very boring with just one choice. The only disappointment is that the claypot comes with only half a fish head instead of whole.

IMG_3150ed
Salted Egg Yolk Chicken 4.2/5

To have a more complete meal, you may want to throw in another local favourite Salted Egg Yolk Chicken. I am a big fan of salted egg yolk so this is a winner for me. The chicken was tender and juicy complemented  by the salted egg yolk sauce. The flavour of salted egg yolk sauce was enhanced further with the curry leaves aroma and a hint spiciness.

IMG_3151ed
Prawn Fritter 4.5/5

You can also dropped by Rumah Sayang to have either your breakfast and tea if you are not looking for a full meal. They also have local delights like mee siam, mee rebus, mee soto, lakaa, prata, lotong and nyonya kuehs on their menu. Among them my favourite is the Prawn Fritter ($1.60 for 2pc). Hardly get to find this delicious prawny snack elsewhere. Deep fried to golden brown, crispy and not too oily. This is must eaten with the homemade chilli dip.
