Royal Host @ Jewel Changi Airport - Pioneer of Japanese-Western Food Opens Its First Direct Store Outside Japan

RoyalHost13

RoyalhostInterior-2

Renowned as the pioneer of Japanese-Western food, Royal Host boasts over 200 stores in Japan and a legacy spanning over 50 years. Now, this beloved household family restaurant has opened its first direct store outside Japan at Jewel Changi Airport. With its extensive history and reputation for delicious Japanese-Western comfort food, Royal Host brings a much-anticipated culinary experience to Singapore.

RoyalHost1
Onion Gratin Soup 4.2/5

We commenced our dinner with a comforting bowl of Onion Gratin Soup ($7.80). This homemade consommé, sweetened by caramelized onions, features a slice of toasted baguette loaded with melty Gruyère cheese. I recommend leaving the baguette to soak up the delicious soup for a bit longer for an even richer experience. This soup is a long-standing bestseller of Royal Host, gaining fame when Marilyn Monroe praised it during her honeymoon to Japan in 1954.

RoyalHost15
Kale Salad 3/5

For a healthier option, we tried the superfood Kale Salad ($19.80). This crunchy kale salad is complemented by plant-based meat, blueberries, and a special peanut oil salad dressing that adds an aromatic finish. It's a refreshing and nutritious choice that perfectly balances the meal.

RoyalHost9
Omurice with Demiglace Sauce 4/5

The Omurice with Demiglace Sauce ($26.80) is a must-try. Fresh eggs flown all the way from Kyushu prefecture create a creamy omelette that tops fluffy Japanese ketchup rice. For a unique twist, there's a Singapore-exclusive version featuring Singapore Chilli Sauce and Snow Crab on top. The dish combines traditional Japanese flavours with a local touch, making it a standout item on the menu.

RoyalHost14

RoyalHost20
Hamburg with Brown Butter Sauce 4.5/5

Royal Host's signature item is their Japanese Hamburg. We sampled the "ROYAL" Hamburg Steak with Brown Butter Sauce ($29.80), served sizzling on a hot plate. Made using premium-quality beef typically reserved for steaks, the hamburg is seared to perfection, achieving a beautiful exterior char while maintaining a succulent and juicy texture. There's also a Singapore-exclusive Black Pepper Sauce version for those who prefer a bit of heat.

RoyalHost23
Parfait and Hot Fudge Sundae 4.5/5

We indulged in the Parfait and Hot Fudge Sundae ($18.40) to wrap up our meal. The dessert menu offers three categories: Parfait, Ice Cream, and Cake. Our choice, the Parfait and Hot Fudge Sundae, was delicately layered with tantalizing flavours in each layer, providing a delightful end to our dining experience.

Royal Host's debut in Singapore at Jewel Changi Airport is a delightful addition to the local culinary scene. With its rich history and dedication to quality, the restaurant offers a unique blend of Japanese-Western comfort food that is both nostalgic and innovative. Whether you're craving a hearty bowl of soup, a nutritious salad, or a sizzling hamburg steak, Royal Host promises a memorable dining experience that brings the best of Japan to Singapore.

Allora Ristorante & Bar @ Crowne Plaza Changi Airport - Offers Authentic Italian Cuisine, Transporting One to the Heart of Italy

Entrance 1

Nestled on Level 1 of Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, Allora Ristorante and Bar offers a slice of Italy with its authentic cuisine, inviting ambience, and diverse dining spaces. Opened in January 2024, Allora is part of the hotel's S$22 million asset enhancement. The restaurant promises not just a meal but an experience that transports you to the heart of Italy.

Pizza Station 1

Upon entering Allora, you're immediately drawn to the live pizza-making station, a centrepiece of culinary artistry. The station's arched design, with its dark, sleek surfaces and contemporary lighting fixtures, creates an intimate and inviting atmosphere. The aroma of freshly baked dough and the sight of the chef expertly manoeuvring the pizza peels add an element of excitement and authenticity to your dining experience.

Complimentary Bread 1
Complimentary Bread 3/5

As in most Italian restaurants, we were served with complimentary bread at the start of the meal. What we got was Sliced Baguettes, accompanied by what seemed to be marinara sauce instead of the usual olive oil and balsamic vinegar. However, the bread wasn't warm enough, and the sauce was cold from the chiller.

Bruschetta Ham & Truffle 1
Bruschetta Ham & Truffle 3.8/5

We were recommended a Bruschetta ($14) starter to share, and we picked the Ham & Truffle flavour topped with Cheese Fondue, cooked Ham and Black Truffle Sauce. It used the same sliced baguette, but these were crispier and warm. The cheese and truffle flavours were relatively light; the more prominent taste came from the savouriness of the ham.

Polpo & Patate 1
Polpo & Patate 3.5/5

Polpo & Patate ($24), their signature antipasti, features tender grilled octopus served with potatoes, cherry tomato confit, green beans, parsley, and bagna cauda, an Italian sauce made from garlic, anchovies, and olive oil. While the octopus was tender, it lacked the desired char flavour. However, the fried potato pieces were tasty and complemented the dish well.

Lobster Pasta 1
Lobster Pasta 4.2/5

The Lobster Pasta ($38), made with homemade black ink tagliolini, offers a striking visual appeal without the concern of black stains. This is because the black ink is infused into the pasta rather than used as a sauce.

Lobster Pasta 3

This exquisite pasta is paired with half a Boston lobster, adding succulent, sweet meat to the dish. The lobster is perfectly complemented by a luxurious bisque cherry tomato sauce and fresh basil, infusing the pasta with a vibrant and aromatic blend of flavours. A hint of lemon adds a refreshing citrus note, balancing the richness and enhancing the overall taste experience. We really like this, and it's a dish we will return for.

Bari Pizza 1
Bari Pizza 4/5

The Bari Pizza ($34), inspired by Chef Enzo's hometown of Bari, pays culinary homage to the flavours of Southern Italy. Instead of placing a whole burrata in the centre, the creamy burrata is spread over the pizza, providing a rich and velvety texture in every bite. Fresh tomato pulp filets add a burst of vibrant, tangy flavour. Savoury anchovies and Pantelleria capers introduce a delightful brininess, perfectly complemented by fragrant basil leaves. This combination of ingredients creates a harmonious and authentic taste experience, transporting us to what we imagine Bari to be like, even though we haven't been there.

Tagliata 2
Tagliata 3.8/5

We were looking for a beef entrée and were recommended the Tagliata ($78), which pairs chargrilled Australian Angus Beef Ribeye with local farm organic arugula and vine cherry tomatoes. The tender and skilfully seasoned beef is complemented by roasted garlic and balsamic jus. The crisp arugula was really fresh and refreshing, but the dish leans towards a salad with meat rather than the expected substantial, juicy steak served alongside a side salad.

Cannolo 1
Cannolo 3/5

Upon spotting the Cannolo ($16) on the menu, a rendition of the classic Italian Cannoli, we were eager to try it. Filled with creamy ricotta cheese and adorned with delicate candied fruit and chocolate chips, it struck a delightful balance of sweetness. However, we noted that the fried pastry shells, while flavourful, arrived slightly soggy, suggesting they may have been pre-made and chilled before serving.

Alloramisú 1
Alloramisú 3.8/5

Alloramisú ($16), Allora's signature dessert, provided a sophisticated sweet finale with tableside assembly upon ordering. It showcased homemade Savoiardi cookies soaked in espresso coffee, layered with mascarpone cream and coffee jelly, and generously dusted with cocoa powder. While the flavours were delightful and balanced, we prefer our tiramisu to be creamier and "wetter," which left us feeling it fell slightly short of our preferences.

Allora offers a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where guests can select their preferred setting from a range of spaces: the chic dining room, lively lobby lounge, inviting alfresco area, and stylish bar. The bar also features live music, creating a relaxed vibe. Allora caters to various occasions with its versatile ambience.

Starting in Q2 2024, Allora has introduced an Italian Weekend Brunch Buffet. Pricing and menu details are currently unavailable; please visit their website closer to the launch date for more information.

Cheese Croquettes 4/5

Those who RSVP via Chope with the promo code "JTG88" are in for a treat with a complimentary appetiser: Cheese Croquettes worth $16.90. These delightful bites are stuffed with chorizo, manchego, and mozzarella, encased in a crispy breadcrumb coat. The accompanying macadamia romesco sauce pairs excellently, adding a nutty and slightly tangy note.

Grilled Steak and Chargrilled Artichoke Salad 4/5

Beyond the cheese and wine offerings, Jones the Grocer's menu is diverse and appealing. The Grilled Steak and Chargrilled Artichoke Salad is a hearty option, priced at $25.90. This generous salad includes fresh ingredients like avocado, shallots, radishes, and mixed greens, all topped with a cumin and brown sugar-rubbed flank steak. The chargrilled artichokes add a lovely smoky flavour, making this dish both substantial and satisfying.

JoneTheGrocerT2-17
Tagliatelle with Braised Short Rib Ragout 4.2/5

The Tagliatelle with Braised Short Rib Ragout ($27.90) is a standout dish for pasta lovers. The tagliatelle is perfectly cooked, and the rich, flavoursome braised short rib ragout is complemented by crispy sage and parmesan. Each bite is a harmonious blend of textures and flavours, creating a delightful mouthful.

JoneTheGrocerT2-27
Italian Stallion 3.5/5

From their pizza menu, we tried the Italian Stallion ($29.90). This pizza is topped with green peppercorn salami, fior di latte, chilli peperonata, Persian feta, mint, and parsley. The thin, non-doughy crust was perfect for my taste, and the combination of toppings worked beautifully together, offering a spicy, creamy, and refreshing bite all at once.

JoneTheGrocerT2Exterior-2

Jones the Grocer at Changi Airport Terminal 2 has successfully blended gourmet dining with a relaxed, accessible atmosphere. The Cheese & Wine Nights are a particular highlight, offering great value and an enjoyable midweek indulgence. While some dishes shine more than others, the overall experience is satisfying and worth visiting. Whether you're a traveller passing through or a local looking for a new dining spot, Jones the Grocer delivers a delightful and varied menu that caters to a wide range of tastes. Keep an eye out for their menu revamp, promising even more exciting options in the future.

The "Beautiful To Sea" cocktail ($21/glass) combines vodka, kyoho grape liqueur, lemon juice, sugar, and lychee, creating a refreshing and fruity concoction. To elevate the taste, these delectable wings are served with a homemade spicy dip, adding an extra kick to every bite.

Tanyu Exclusive 探鱼 @ Jewel Changi Airport - Newly Opened Tanyu Outlet with 8 Flavours of Grilled Fish and Self-Service Ice Jelly Bar to Enjoy Till 3am

IMG_3851

Tanyu has been one of many diners' go-to spots for Chongqing-style grilled fish since it joined the local F&B scene in 2017. Newly introduced in Jewel Changi Airport is Tanyu Exclusive, the brand's first-ever supper concept store, open to welcome diners till 3am daily!

IMG_1505

The new space works perfectly as a supper spot or to enjoy before you catch a flight. If you dine in later in the night between 10pm and 3pm, there are special supper exclusives and an additional 15% off. All of the staff we met were very cheery and helpful, and the curated Chinese playlist enhanced the overall vibes.

IMG_3845
Self-service Ice Jelly Bar

The unlimited Self-service Ice Jelly Bar ($2.80/pax) is definitely the first thing that would catch your eye upon stepping in. It's fun to DIY and refreshing to have through the meal.

Pick from different types of jelly to add to the shaved ice with other toppings, including osmanthus honey, peach gum, pearls, peanuts, hawthorn bits, and more. We went back for seconds and thirds for this.

IMG_3847
Fresh Clams in Spicy Sauce 4/5

We started with a chilled appetiser, the Fresh Clams in Spicy Sauce ($9.90). The clams were average in size but picked up the mildly spicy and numbing sauce well.

IMG_3848
Chongqing Cold Noodles with Shredded Chicken 4/5

You can opt for regular white rice to accompany the grilled fish, but Tanyu also offers noodle dishes. For a spicy option, go for the Chongqing Cold Noodles with Shredded Chicken ($8.90). While I found the noodles a little too soft, I liked the smooth texture and the appetising sauce.

IMG_3849
Noodles with Onion Oil 3.8/5

There is Noodles with Onion Oil ($5.80) for a non-spicy choice. Similarly, it had softer noodles here, but I found the scallion oil used, unfortunately, a little too bland.

IMG_3851

IMG_3856
Grilled Fish with Fresh Green Pepper, with Limbo Fish 4.8/5

The highlight of our meal was the Grilled Fish with Fresh Green Pepper, with Limbo Fish ($48.90). I always appreciate how customisable a meal at Tanyu is - you can pick your choice of fish broth and add a variety of ingredients to your liking.

I recommend adding their special beancurd ($3.90), which soaked up the broth superbly well. Other ingredients ($4.50/portion) include enoki mushrooms, konjac, bamboo shoots, potato slices and more. My only qualm here was the broth's saltiness, which made it less drinkable.

IMG_3855
Grilled Fish with Sauerkraut, with Limbo Fish 4.5/5

We had the Grilled Fish with Sauerkraut for our second fish, with Limbo Fish ($48.90). The fish in both were tender, soft and fresh, which made it easy to separate from its bones. The saltiness here was more balanced with strong tangy notes.

IMG_3852
Golden Mushroom with Minced Garlic 4/5

Enoki mushroom and garlic fans should try the Golden Mushroom with Minced Garlic ($5.80). It's a simple dish, but the intense garlic flavours were satisfying.

IMG_3853
Lychee Shrimp Ball 4.2/5

We were most surprised by the Lychee Shrimp Ball ($9.80). They were served piping hot and crunchy, with a juicy shrimp filling, pairing harmoniously with the tangy chilli on the side.

IMG_3854
Grilled Lamb, Grilled Chicken 3.8/5

While the rub of herbs and spices on the Grilled Lamb ($6.90 for 3 Pieces) and Grilled Chicken ($6.90 for 3 Pieces) were decently aromatic, we found both meats too tough.

IMG_3850
Double Taste Rice Cake 4.5/5

The Double Taste Rice Cake ($7.80 for 5 Pieces) was a hot dessert that had praises from everyone. Each had a thin crisp exterior while remaining delightfully soft and chewy within. It was perfect to enjoy with the drizzle of black sugar syrup.

IMG_3846
Thunder Grape Drink, Tangerine Hawthorn Drink

We had huge cups of beverages to pair, namely the Thunder Grape Drink ($5.80) and Tangerine Hawthorn Drink ($5.80). Though these came in a big portion for sharing, they were both too sweet for our liking.
