Reuben's Western Cuisine @ Kallang Bahru - Elevated Coffeeshop Western Food with Premium Cuts and Creative Pastas

Reubens23

Tucked inside First Eating House Coffeeshop at Kallang Bahru, Reuben’s Western Cuisine is a heartland stall that goes beyond the usual coffeeshop Western fare. Helmed by Reuben Koh, the stall serves up restaurant-style pastas, premium cuts of meat and creative desserts that showcase a more ambitious approach to casual dining.

ReubensIG-1

From a former youth offender to running his own Western food stall, Reuben’s journey is one of second chances, resilience and finding a new direction through food. His story adds another dimension to the dining experience, making this more than just a coffeeshop stall serving Western dishes.

Reuben began his culinary journey in 2019, starting from the bottom as a dishwasher at CHIJMES. There, a chef inspired him to learn to cook, and the discipline and experience he gained in the kitchen helped him turn his life around. He subsequently gained experience operating a junior college canteen stall before venturing into the hawker scene.

Earlier in 2026, he opened his first Western food stall, Reverie, in Clementi, which quickly attracted attention for its restaurant-style pastas and personal backstory. After stepping away from the brand in April, Reuben made a fresh start with Reuben’s Western Cuisine, which opened on 1 July 2026 at First Eating House in Kallang Bahru. He is joined by Derek Cheong, winner of MasterChef Singapore Season 2, bringing together their culinary experience to offer something different from the typical heartland Western food stall.

Beef Short Rib Ragu Mafalda 4.5/5

The Beef Short Rib Ragu Mafalda was the standout of my visit, showcasing the kind of pasta execution more common in a restaurant than a coffeeshop. The dish features mafalda pasta, characterised by broad ribbons and ruffled edges that provide plenty of surface area to catch the rich sauce.

The beef short rib ragu was hearty and deeply savoury, with the slow-cooked beef breaking down into tender, fork-shredded pieces. The meat melded beautifully with the sauce, delivering layers of flavour that coated the pasta without overwhelming it. I also liked the texture of the mafalda, which held a pleasant bite while still holding the luscious ragu.

It was a comforting yet indulgent plate of pasta, with the tender beef and robust sauce working harmoniously together. At a coffeeshop stall, this level of execution was particularly impressive, making it a dish I would return for.

Reuben's Pork Chop 4.2/5

Reuben’s Pork Chop is another example of how the stall elevates familiar Western fare with a more restaurant-inspired approach. Rather than the usual thin, battered pork chop found at neighbourhood Western food stalls, this version features a thicker cut of pork, putting the focus on the meat's quality and preparation.

The pork chop was juicy and tender on the inside, complemented by a nicely browned exterior that added a savoury, caramelised flavour. The accompanying mustard pork jus brought depth to the dish, with its rich, meaty notes balanced by a gentle mustard tang. The sauce added character without masking the pork's natural flavour.

The sides kept things comforting and familiar, with fries and a smooth, buttery potato mash given an interesting twist through the addition of coffee. The latter offered a distinctive flavour that set it apart from the usual mash served with coffeeshop Western food. Together, the components made for a hearty plate that felt more polished than the typical neighbourhood pork chop.

Kaya Toast 4.2/5

For dessert, the Kaya Toast offered a creative interpretation of a familiar Singaporean breakfast favourite. Instead of the usual thin slices of toasted bread, the dish features thick brioche toast, bringing a more indulgent texture to the local classic.

The brioche was toasted to a golden finish, giving it a lightly crisp exterior while retaining a soft, pillowy centre. It was paired with silky crème anglaise and pandan gelato, which added a refreshing, fragrant note that complemented the toast's buttery richness.

The dessert was finished with desiccated coconut and pistachio milk crumbs, adding texture and a subtle nuttiness. A drizzle of gula melaka brought everything together with its deep caramel-like sweetness, reinforcing the local flavours while balancing the richness of the brioche and cream.

I liked how the dish took the familiar combination of kaya toast and pandan and reimagined it into a plated dessert. It was a thoughtful and playful finish to the meal, showing that the stall's creativity extends beyond its savoury offerings.

Reuben’s Western Cuisine is worth checking out for those who appreciate restaurant-style Western food in an unpretentious coffeeshop setting. Beyond the food, Reuben’s personal journey makes the stall particularly interesting. His transition from working as a dishwasher to running his own business reminds us how determination, discipline, and the right opportunities can help someone find a new direction in life. With its combination of thoughtfully prepared pastas, premium meat dishes and inventive desserts, Reuben’s Western Cuisine offers something different from the usual coffeeshop Western fare. If you're in Kallang Bahru, this stall is worth adding to your list.

Fish & Chicks @ Clementi West Street 2 - Salted Egg And Chilli Crab Fish & Chips

FishNChick-11

Fish & Chicks has recently opened a new outlet in Clementi West Street 2. It has eleven outlets around the island. The western food stall is known for its array of Asian-infused western food, pairing Asian spices with classic western dishes, served in generous portions.

FishNChick-01
Salted Egg Fish & Chips 3.8/5

I had the Salted Egg Fish & Chips ($11.80). It comes in an enormous piece of moist fish fillet coated in a crispy and light batter. I was sceptical whether the salt egg yolk sauce complements the fried fish, and it turned out the sauce was legit yummy, which goes very well with the fried fish. For the sides, we have coleslaw and french fries.

FishNChick-09
Chilli Crab Fish & Chips 3.5/5

My partner has the Chilli Crab Fish & Chips ($11.80), which comes with the same coleslaw and french fries for the sides. However, the chilli crab sauce fell short of my expectation. It lacks the punchy taste profile that makes the chilli crab a national dish both locals and foreigners love.

FishNChick-05

Besides Fish and Chips, the stall sells many other western fares such as steak, pasta and even Japanese donburi. Fish & Chicks is a hawker stall; hence I can't expect restaurant quality for its fish and chips. However, it is affordable, and serving is generous. I don't mind going back to try the other items on the menu.

Mariners' Corner Restaurant @ Sunset Way - The Hainanese Western Restaurant Has Moved To The West

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-50

Suppose you are fans of Mariners' Corner Restaurant, which used to be at Maritime House. In that case, you will be glad to know that the Hainanese Western restaurant has moved to Sunset Way at Clementi Street 12. Stepping into the restaurant, I felt that I had been transported to the 1980s, giving me a nostalgic feel.

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-46

After browsing through the menu, we decided to add an extra $5.80 for a complete set meal, complementing the main course with a bowl of Salad, Soup of the Day, Garlic Bread. Coffee/Tea and dessert.

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-08

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-11

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-09
We started with the Salad Bowl dressed in thousand island sauce, followed by Garlic Bread and Creamy Chicken Soup. There is nothing wow to shout about but classic old-school starters to kickstart the meal before the main course.

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-21
Calamari with Tar Tar Sauce 3/5

We decided to order a plate of Calamari with Tar Tar Sauce ($7.50) for the appetiser. Unfortunately, while we enjoyed the crispy batter, we found the squid was a bit rubbery.

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-32

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-40
New Zealand Ribeye Steak 4.2/5

For my main, I decided to go for the New Zealand Ribeye Steak ($27) served with baked potato and buttered veggies. For the sauces, there are five choices - black pepper, mushroom, garlic shallot, BBQ and sambal. I decided to go for the black pepper sauce for the steak. I find it value-for-money for the quality of beef and price. What I find weird is the topping for the baked potato. It uses deep-fried garlic instead of bacon. I am not sure this is the norm, but I am used to having it with bacon instead of deep-fried garlic.

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-27
Grilled King Snapper 2.8/5

My partner has the Grilled King Snapper ($23.50) paired with Almonds with Lemon Butter sauce for the other main. I thought it was lacklustre, lacking the sharpness in flavour to lift the fresh catch. I was expecting it to be more grilled too. Instead, it was too plain, missing the char-grilled aroma.

MarinersCornerSunsetWay-42

Finally, wrapping up our set meal is a slice of Fruit Cake with chocolate sauce. Actually, Mariners' Corner reminds me of Jack's Place with its interior decor and food, providing a nostalgic charm that is slowly disappearing in an urbanised country like Singapore.

VUE @ OUE Bayfront - Surf & Turf Weekend Set Lunch With A Cocktail On The House

Vue11

Located atop OUE Bayfront, VUE has been known for having one of the best views of Singapore's skyline. The time to really take it all in is perhaps the weekend, and catering to these precious hours is a newly launched "Surf & Turf" Weekend Set Lunch menu priced at $128. With this special menu, you get a choice of seafood as well as meat, complemented by 2 sides, and a dessert to end off your leisure afternoon.

Vue2
Lunch cocktail

Since it's a weekend and you might have started your day late, VUE has prepared a cocktail on the house to wake up your senses. Choose between a Bloody Mary or a Mimosa, or if you like to have more, subsequent orders will be at $15 each.

Vue9
Lobster Thermidor 3.5/5

An aperitif was indeed much needed for the meal ahead. For seafood, we chose Lobster Thermidor (+$12) of whole Maine lobster baked with mushroom, cheddar and gruyere, served with Hollandaise sauce. The lobster meat itself was scrumptious with the sauce and cheeses, and I felt the mushrooms didn't quite fit into the whole situation.

Vue12
USDA Prime Black Angus 4.5/5

VUE specialises in binchotan-grilled meats, and included as one of the Turf options is a 250g USDA Prime, Brandt Family Ribeye (+$35). Its beautiful flavours were enhanced by cooking over the charcoal, which imparted a depth of smokiness into the meat.

Vue16
Signature A5 "Kokuou' Emperor Black Wagyu Brisket 3.8/5

We also tried its signature A5 "Kokuou' Emperor Black Wagyu Brisket. Slow roasted for 24hours, the brisket had achieved the desired level of tenderness, and its flavours were superb. I find the sauce slightly too assertive, less of it would have made the meat even more pleasurable.

Vue18
Roasted Bone Marrow 3.5/5

For sides, we tried Truffle Polenta, Creamed Spinach, Grilled Cauliflower and Roasted Bone Marrow with Mushroom Duxelles (+$10). I reckoned the bone marrow needed a few more minutes of heat and a dose of salt to turn it into a luscious and savoury butter. What's missing is a few pieces of crostini! Still, it could be worth getting the bone marrow, which is sizeable for two.

Vue26
Basque-Style Burnt Cheesecake 4.5/5

The dessert is Basque-Style Burnt Cheesecake, and it was simply decadent. Inherently rich with heavy cream and cream cheese, I was surprised by how light this was - firm, moist with a custardy core. The tart berry jam went a long way in balancing the sweetness of the cheesecake, alongside the freshness of mixed berries. I love the addition of the almond crumbles too, which brilliantly compensated the lack of a buttery and crunchy element of burnt cheesecakes.

Photos and words by Si An. A girl who is allured by travelling, loves the feel of freedom, smell of the rain and the aroma of fine coffee and food. Note: This is an invited tasting.
