Longjing (绿茶餐厅) @ Novena Square - Elegant Zhejiang Flavours in a Serene Bamboo-Inspired Setting

LongJingNovenaRestaurant-3

Following its successful debut at Suntec City, where snaking queues became a daily sight, Longjing (绿茶) has expanded with a new outlet at Novena Square. Hailing from Hangzhou, the brand spotlights Zhejiang (Jiangnan) cuisine, known for its light, refined, and produce-forward approach in contrast to the bolder, spice-laden profiles of other Chinese regional cuisines.

Stepping into the Novena space, diners are greeted by a serene bamboo-themed interior, an evolution of the brand’s signature “water town” aesthetic. Glowing lanterns, hand-painted murals, and wooden accents come together to evoke the poetic charm of Jiangnan’s misty waterways, offering a tranquil dining atmosphere that complements the cuisine’s understated elegance.

LongJingNovena18
Vermicelli Wrapped Shrimps 4.2/5

We began with the Vermicelli Wrapped Shrimps ($18.80). Presented on a sizzling hotplate, the dish is theatrically finished tableside with a drizzle of sauce that releases an aromatic burst. The prawns are succulent and bouncy, while the vermicelli acts as a sponge, soaking up the umami-laden seafood juices, garlic, and fragrant oil. Despite its robust flavours, the dish remains balanced and not overly salty, staying true to the restrained seasoning typical of Zhejiang cooking.

LongJingNovena8
Chive and Shrimp Crispy Pancake 3.5/5

The Chive and Shrimp Crispy Pancake ($8.80) offers a contrast in texture. Its thin, golden-brown wrapper shatters upon bite, delivering a brittle crispness with a surprisingly light, non-greasy finish. Within, a fragrant filling of chopped Chinese chives and shrimp provides a punchy, garlicky aroma balanced by the seafood’s natural sweetness.

LongJingNovena6
Double Boiled Black Chicken Soup with Bamboo Fungus 4/5

For something comforting, the Double Boiled Black Chicken Soup with Bamboo Fungus ($7.80) delivers a nourishing, restorative quality. The broth is clear and delicate, with a natural sweetness drawn from hours of double boiling. The bamboo fungus lends an interesting textural dimension, spongy yet gently crispy, absorbing the broth while adding a subtle bite.

LongJingNovena14
Stir-fried Chinese Chive 4/5

Vegetable dishes are handled with equal finesse. The Stir-fried Chinese Chive ($11.80) showcases commendable wok hei, lending a smoky aroma that enhances the chives’ inherent garlicky sharpness. Flash-fried to retain their vibrant green hue and slight crunch, the young chives are tender and aromatic without turning fibrous.

LongJingNovena27
Hangzhou Eggplant with Sweet Peppers 4/5

Equally satisfying is the Hangzhou Eggplant with Sweet Peppers ($9.80). Unlike its oilier Sichuan counterparts, this rendition is lighter and more refined. The eggplant is braised to a silky, melt-in-the-mouth consistency, while sweet peppers introduce a gentle brightness and colour contrast without overpowering the dish.

LongJingNovena25
Longjin Roast Chicken 4.2/5

Among the meat offerings, the Longjing Roast Chicken ($23.80) stands out. Subtly infused with tea aroma, the dish carries a clean, fragrant finish that balances the richness of the roasted fat. The chicken is tender and juicy, encased in a paper-thin, golden skin that crackles lightly upon bite while remaining surprisingly lean.

LongJingNovena35
Fiery Ribs 4.2/5

For those seeking bolder flavours, the Fiery Ribs ($23.80) offer a punchier profile. The ribs boast a crisp exterior and tender, fall-off-the-bone interior, coated in a dry-rub seasoning of dried chillies, garlic, and peppercorns. The heat is fragrant and mildly numbing, reminiscent of mala but less oily and more restrained, making it accessible yet satisfying.

LongJingNovena24
Claypot Rice with Egg, Smoked Pork, Mushroom, and Choy Sum 4.2/5

The Claypot Rice with Egg, Smoked Pork, Mushroom, and Choy Sum ($15.80) rounds off the savoury selections. Cooked traditionally in a claypot, the rice develops a prized scorched crust (guoba) along the base, delivering a smoky crunch that contrasts with the fluffy grains above. Compared to the darker, soy-heavy Cantonese versions, this rendition is cleaner yet still deeply savoury.

LongJingNovena43
Leifeng Pagoda 3.8/5

On a lighter note, the Leifeng Pagoda ($4.80) is a visually appealing dessert inspired by the iconic Pagoda. The silky milk-based pudding is gently sweetened, allowing its creamy, milky fragrance to shine. With its delicate wobble and melt-in-the-mouth texture, it provides a refreshing and elegant conclusion to the meal.

Overall, Longjing’s Novena outlet continues to impress with its thoughtful execution of Zhejiang cuisine — a cuisine that celebrates subtlety, balance, and natural flavours. Coupled with its immersive ambience, it offers a dining experience that feels both transportive and comforting, bringing a slice of Jiangnan’s poetic charm to Singapore.

Geylang Claypot Rice (芽笼砂煲饭) @ Beach Road - Revamped Menu Starring Beef Bone Marrow Claypot Rice

IMG_2162

Located along Beach Road, Geylang Claypot Rice has been a go-to destination for claypot rice lovers for over 44 years. Preparing and serving each claypot the old-school way since day one, this claypot master has recently introduced a new creation, the Beef Bone Marrow Claypot Rice.

IMG_2160
Beef Bone Marrow Claypot Rice 4.5/5

The Beef Bone Marrow Claypot Rice ($42) features beef short ribs marinated and slow-cooked in a rich, savoury sauce. The beef is placed atop the rice in the claypot and cooked over charcoal, allowing the juices and fats to seep into the grains while caramelising around the edges. Once the beef short ribs are served, they are removed and set aside so the rice can be mixed with the condiments.

IMG_2168

Two egg yolks are added, followed by the star of the dish: smoky, charcoal-grilled beef bone marrow, which replaces the oil typically used to mix the rice. Finishing with a dash of dark soy sauce made the resulting rice incredible. Generous amounts of beef juices and fats infused into the grains, laced with charcoal-smoked smokiness, made every mouthful deeply satisfying. The best part was the crisped rice at the bottom of the claypot, intensely flavourful and moreish, adding a delightful crunch that elevated the entire dish.

IMG_2142
Signature Chicken Claypot Rice 4.5/5

Compared side by side with the Signature Chicken Claypot Rice ($22.80), which brimmed with chunky, marinated boneless chicken leg, intensely savoury lap cheong, salted fish, and smoked pork belly. The bone marrow variant stood out for its richer, buttery, and savoury nuances. Meanwhile, the classic version delivered the familiar comforting flavours and greater textural bite from the chicken and slices of lap cheong.

IMG_2182
Kai Lan with Pork Lard and Oyster Sauce 4/5

The Kai Lan with Pork Lard and Oyster Sauce ($12.80) was simple but showcased the beauty of using a claypot as a vessel for charcoal cooking. The technique infused subtle smoky nuances, adding depth to the greens.

IMG_2190
Braised Lotus Root Duck 4.2/5

The Braised Lotus Root Duck (1/4 portion $18.80, 1/2 portion $34.80) featured fork-tender duck that could be easily pulled apart, with the meat sliding off the bones. I appreciated that the flavours were subtle and easy on the palate, complementing the more robust claypot rice.

IMG_2183
Prawns with Homemade Tofu 4.5/5

Another crowd-pleasing dish was the Prawns with Homemade Tofu ($14.80). The tofu was delightfully custardy and tender, held together by a delicate exterior skin that absorbed the flavours of the gravy.

IMG_2177
Beancurd Skin Roll 3.8/5

The Beancurd Skin Roll ($11.80) was moreish as well, made from scratch daily with pork, crunchy water chestnuts, shrimp and diced mushrooms. I liked that it wasn’t overly meaty, with the ingredients well-balanced.

IMG_2200
Fresh BBQ Crabs

Fresh BBQ Crabs (Male Crabs $18 | 2 for $34, Female Crabs $28 | 2 for $54) are also available and prepared to order with limited portions daily. While the char added an extra layer of flavour, the meat was slightly tougher than expected.

If you are a fan of claypot rice, the Beef Bone Marrow Claypot Rice is definitely one to savour. The menu has also been refreshed, introducing several new creations to look forward to.

Ah Ching Claypot Rice (阿清砂煲饭) @ Lower Delta Road - Traditional Charcoal Claypot Rice Cooked From Raw Rice

AhChingLowerDelta-20

AhChingLowerDelta-3

I have been following Ah Ching, the man behind Ah Ching Claypot Rice, since his days cooking at Geylang Claypot Rice, before he ventured out on his own — first at Simpang Bedok, then Sin Ming, and now a new outlet at Lower Delta Road. Staying true to tradition, Ah Ching continues to serve his signature charcoal-cooked claypot rice, painstakingly prepared from scratch over a charcoal fire using old rice grains.

AhChingLowerDelta-11

AhChingLowerDelta-6
Claypot Rice 4.2/5

To enjoy the Claypot Rice at its best, it is highly recommended to call and pre-order in advance. Otherwise, be prepared for a long wait, as each claypot rice is cooked fresh over charcoal fire. I would also suggest ordering extra chicken pieces for a more satisfying experience. The rice was fluffy and fragrant, tossed in an aromatic, slightly sweet black soy sauce that enhanced the overall enjoyment. The chicken pieces were tender and well-cooked. However, there was a slight flaw during my visit — possibly due to the overwhelming crowd — as the rice was overly burnt at the base, which detracted a little from the experience.

AhChingLowerDelta-24
Claypot Tofu 3/5

Beyond claypot rice, the stall also offers a selection of cooked dishes. To complement the meal, we ordered a few sides. The Claypot Tofu was comforting and hearty, a decent dish that does its job, though it did not quite leave a lasting impression.

AhChingLowerDelta-29
Stir-fried Kai Lan 3/5

For a balanced diet, we had the Stir-fried Kai Lan. Simply executed with garlic, it was well-cooked and retained a pleasant crunch, making it a reliable vegetable dish to go with the mains.

AhChingLowerDelta-34
Har Cheong Kai 3.5/5

Served piping hot, the Har Cheong Kai (Prawn Paste Chicken) was tender and juicy inside, with a light and crispy batter. While enjoyable, I wished the prawn paste flavour could have been more pronounced for that extra punch.

Despite the minor hiccup with the burnt rice, it is still heartening to see Ah Ching remain committed to traditional charcoal cooking — a craft that is increasingly rare these days. For fans of old-school claypot rice, this is still a place worth checking out, especially if you pre-order and come with the right expectations.

Im Jai by Pun Im @ Icon Village - Debuts Lunar New Year 2026 Menu with a Thai Twist

ImJaiCNY26-16

Im Jai by Pun Im at Icon Village ushers in Lunar New Year 2026 with its inaugural festive menu, reimagining classic Chinese New Year staples through a distinctly Thai lens. Known for its bold Thai flavours and creative reinterpretations, Im Jai presents a refreshing celebration that marries auspicious symbolism with vibrant Thai ingredients and techniques.

ImJaiCNY26-9
Charoen “Prosperous” Yu Sheng 4.2/5

Replacing the customary shredded vegetables, Im Jai’s Yu Sheng takes inspiration from Thai salads. The Im Jai Charoen Yu Sheng (Serves 3–5, $58) features premium salmon belly slices atop a colourful medley of green papaya, green mango, pomelo, mandarin oranges, and cherry tomatoes. Tossed in a signature Som Tum–style spicy-sour sauce blended with sweetened fish sauce, the dish is finished with toasted coconut, fried shallots, ground dried shrimp, and pumpkin seeds. The result is a uniquely Thai Yu Sheng that delivers a harmonious balance of sweet, sour, savoury, and spicy flavours, complemented by engaging textures. For larger gatherings, the Im Jai Grand Charoen Yu Sheng (Serves 6–8, $98) is also available.

ImJaiCNY26-5
Crispy Cloud Egg 3.8/5

Im Jai offers a playful spin on the traditional Thai omelette with the Crispy Cloud Egg ($16.80). Kampong egg whites are deep-fried until ultra-fluffy and paired with six pieces of five-hour house-cured sweet-savoury egg yolks. Served with lime, raw shallots, and chilli padi, the dish is impressively crisp and airy. While the cloud-like texture will appeal to many, it leaned a little too light for my personal preference. I found myself missing a more substantial bite.

ImJaiCNY26-1
Fried Squid Tentacles with Im Jai Curry Mayonnaise 4.2/5

The Fried Squid Tentacles with Im Jai Curry Mayonnaise ($10.80) features lightly battered squid tentacles fried to a crisp. What truly elevates the dish is the housemade curry mayonnaise, seasoned with Im Jai’s proprietary blend of Thai curry powder. This addictive combination kept me going back for more, making it a highly enjoyable snack or sharing dish.

ImJaiCNY26-44
Fortune Crispy Spring Rolls 4.2/5

Available for both dine-in and takeaway, the Fortune Crispy Spring Rolls ($23.80) are filled with a medley of vegetables and mushrooms. Encased in a golden, crispy skin, the filling is flavourful and provides a pleasing contrast in texture, resulting in a multi-textural bite that works well as a festive starter.

ImJaiCNY26-55
Golden Crispy Soon Hock & Thai Mango Salad 4.2/5

A whole fish is a must-have on any Chinese New Year table, and Im Jai puts a Thai spin on this tradition with the prized Marble Goby (Soon Hock). The Golden Crispy Soon Hock & Thai Mango Salad ($108, about 1.2kg) is expertly butterflied and deep-fried head-on, with the scales left on, resulting in delicate, crispy, edible scales while keeping the flesh succulent and moist. The fish is paired with a spicy, sweet, and zesty Thai green mango salad, creating an elegant balance of flavour and texture. This is a tasting portion of the whole fish. Diners may also opt for the Steamed Soon Hock with Thai Mango Salad ($108, about 1.2kg).

ImJaiCNY26-38
Steamed Festive Seabass with Spicy & Sour Dressing 4.2/5

Another steamed fish option on the menu is the Steamed Festive Seabass with Spicy & Sour Dressing ($32.80). The fish is perfectly steamed to a moist texture and complemented by a punchy dressing that delivers a delightful spicy kick and sour, zesty finish.

ImJaiCNY26-18

ImJaiCNY26-52
Im Jai Golden Harvest Seafood Claypot Rice 4/5

The Im Jai Golden Harvest Seafood Claypot Rice ($110.80) is a luxurious festive staple featuring wild-caught jumbo black tiger prawns, diced hotate scallops, deep-fried soft shell crab, and deep-fried pork lard. Rich, indulgent, and aromatic, it is a satisfying communal dish well-suited for celebrations.

ImJaiCNY26-50
Black Sticky Rice Nian Gao 5/5

For dessert, the Black Sticky Rice Nian Gao ($21.80) truly stands out. Im Jai’s signature pancake is transformed into a festive Nian Gao using house-milled black sticky rice flour and strips of coconut flesh. Crisp on the outside yet chewy and fragrant within, this dessert is exceptionally good and easily one of the highlights of the meal.

ImJaiCNY26-34
Sweet Coconut Reunion Tang Yuan 4/5

The Sweet Coconut Reunion Tang Yuan (Serves 4–6, $30.80) is based on the traditional Bualoy dessert from Im Jai’s regular menu. It features auspicious red and yellow glutinous rice balls with coconut strips in sweetened coconut milk, finished with a salted egg lava cream. The sweet-savoury interplay reflects the hallmark flavours of Thai desserts.

ImJaiCNY26-20
IM SABAAI’s Signature Abundance Pork Floss

To complete the festivities, Im Jai also offers IM SABAAI’s Signature Abundance Pork Floss ($98), the first of its kind manufactured in Singapore. Presented in an elegant gift box of four bottles adorned with a Fire Horse design and a poetic Chinese couplet, it is available in both Original and Spicy flavours—making it a thoughtful and auspicious Lunar New Year gift.

For the upcoming Chinese New Year 2026, Verandah Rooftop Rotisserie at Momentus Hotel Alexandra welcomes the Year of the Horse with a celebration themed around bountiful harvest and new beginnings. A scrumptious buffet spread of over 30 auspicious dishes and signature roasts awaits, complemented by tableside service and live carving stations.

IMG_0792
14-Day Shio Kombu Butter Aged Angus Ribeye 4.5/5

Taking centre stage at the Signature Roast Station is the 14-Day Shio Kombu Butter Aged Angus Ribeye. Fire-grilled over charcoal, each slice boasted a beautifully charred exterior that further amplified the beef’s naturally rich flavours.

IMG_0852
‘Sha Pi’ Suckling Pig 4.5/5

Next to it is an impressive lineup of live carving roasts, including ‘Sha Pi’ Suckling Pig and Vanilla-Scented Crackling Pork Belly. It was a rare treat to enjoy such a well-executed suckling pig, available exclusively on Chinese New Year’s Eve and the first day of Chinese New Year.

IMG_0861
Vanilla-Scented Crackling Pork Belly 5/5

IMG_0768
Black Truffle “Phoenix” Chicken 4/5

The crackling pork belly satisfied with every crunch into its perfectly crisped skin layered over succulent meat. A definite crowd-pleaser is the Black Truffle “Phoenix” Chicken, which stands out for its lightly crisped skin and tender, juicy meat.

IMG_0794
Dong Po Wagyu Beef Karubi 5/5

IMG_0786
Fragrant Cured Meat ‘Lap Mei Fan’ 4.5/5

Available for takeaway, the Twice-Cooked Black Garlic Pork Belly Char Siew captivated with its glossy glaze and smoky charred edges, offering a richly flavoursome, melt-in-the-mouth bite. Other restaurant-quality takeaway offerings include the unctuous Dong Po Wagyu Beef Karubi, a dish I kept returning to and that lingered in my memory for days. It pairs exceptionally well with the umami-packed Fragrant Cured Meat ‘Lap Mei Fan’.

IMG_0830
Cold Pork Trotter Jelly 4.5/5

IMG_0836
Drunken Chicken 4.5/5

At the Seafood & Cold Appetisers Station, an interesting lineup of cold seafood with familiar flavours is showcased. Highlights for me were the Poached Tiger Prawns with ginger-scallion dip and the roulade of Drunken Chicken with aged Shaoxing wine and wolfberries. The Cold Pork Trotter Jelly was also snapped up quickly.

IMG_0844
Longevity Noodles 4.5/5

An elevated classic is the Longevity Noodles with crab roe and trout caviar. While the sauce looked relatively rich at first glance, it turned out to be well-balanced, coating the noodles with savoury depth without overwhelming them.

IMG_0882
Braised Eight-Head Abalone with Sea Cucumber 4/5

IMG_0885
Golden Lava Cheese Baked Lobster 2.8/5

Tableside service includes Golden Lava Cheese Baked Lobster and Braised Eight-Head Abalone with Sea Cucumber. The lobster was slightly too mushy for my liking, though the abalone dish was nicely executed.

IMG_0808

IMG_0819
Yam Purée

The dessert spread leans wholesome and nostalgic. The most popular item was undoubtedly the Yam Purée with caramelised pumpkin, served alongside other Chinese New Year favourites such as Steamed Nian Gao, pineapple tarts, and green pea cookies.

IMG_0765

The Chinese New Year 2026 buffet at Verandah Rooftop Rotisserie offers a well-rounded and generous festive spread. Other than the excellent signature roasts, the festive mains are well-executed with consideration.
