Tsui Wah 翠華 @ The Cathay - Opens 5th Outlet at Singapore's Iconic Landmark with New Exclusive Dishes and Drinks

Group 1

Fans of authentic Hong Kong cha chaan teng fare have reason to celebrate. Tsui Wah has officially opened its fifth outlet in Singapore at the revamped The Cathay. As part of this exciting launch, diners can look forward to a refreshed and exclusive menu, stylish interiors that blend nostalgic charm with modern flair, and even a new bottled drinks collection for on-the-go indulgence.

Restaurant 2

Drinks 1
Handmade Bitter Gourd Lemon Tea and Bottled Signature Yuen Yang 3.5/5

We began our meal with two new additions to the beverage menu: Handmade Bitter Gourd Lemon Tea ($5.30) and Bottled Signature Yuen Yang ($4.80). The former is an intriguing drink believed to have detoxifying properties. It is surprisingly palatable with only a light bitter aftertaste unless you bite into the gourd bits. The bottled Yuen Yang offers a smooth tea-coffee blend and is part of Tsui Wah's new takeaway drink series, available exclusively at The Cathay. Other bottled flavours include Coffee and Citrus Honey.

Scallion Oil Chicken Steak Rice 1
Scallion Oil Chicken Steak with Triple Eggs & Steamed Rice 4/5

This new main won us over. The Scallion Oil Chicken Steak ($14.80) is topped with fragrant scallion oil and three perfectly runny eggs on a bed of fluffy steamed rice. It is generous, satisfying, and very value for money. This dish is also available with pork chop instead of chicken. It is part of the exclusive offerings at The Cathay outlet.

Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian 1

Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian 3
Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian 4/5

Comfort in a bowl. This hearty Kagoshima-style Pork Cartilage & Wontons in Fish Soup with Mixian ($11.80) combines soft pork cartilage (think: stewed canned pork texture), plump wontons and a light fish broth. Perfect for a rainy day or if you're after something soothing and less heavy.

Tsui Wah's Signature BBQ Pork 1

Tsui Wah's Signature BBQ Pork 2
Tsui Wah's Signature BBQ Pork 3.5/5

The Hong Kong-style BBQ Pork ($13.80) is one of Tsui Wah's Signature dishes. It features tender meat but is a bit sweet for our palate. Nonetheless, it is a staple dish and great for those who enjoy a sweeter char siew profile.

Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk 1
Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk 4/5

No visit to Tsui Wah feels complete without this classic. At $4.20, the Crispy Bun with Condensed Milk is simple comfort food done right! It's crispy, buttery, and lightly sweet. Just be sure to eat it while it's hot, or the bun gets a bit tough when cold.

Egg Tarts 1
Hong Kong-style Egg Tart 3/5

A cha chaan teng essential, this Hong Kong-style Egg Tart ($2.20) arrived piping hot. The egg custard was fragrant, but the crust was denser than we preferred. It is a warm and satisfying bite.

Salted Egg Lava French Toast 1

Salted Egg Lava French Toast 2
Salted Egg Lava French Toast 5/5

My personal favourite from this tasting was definitely the Salted Egg Lava French Toast ($8.80). The sweet-savoury filling was rich and buttery, oozing out as you cut into the toast. It has crisp edges and a soft centre, and the salted egg wasn't overpowering. There's also a Curry Chicken French Toast variant we'll return to try next!

Restaurant 1

Whether you're a regular or visiting for the first time, the new Tsui Wah at The Cathay offers a refreshed and inviting space, plus exclusive dishes that make it well worth a trip down. We left full and satisfied, and are already planning our return visit.

To celebrate the new opening, Tsui Wah at The Cathay is offering a special set meal for just $15.80 (U.P. $20.10) from now until 30 June 2025.

The set includes:
– A main of either Scallion Oil Pork Chop with Triple Eggs and Steamed Rice or Scallion Oil Chicken Steak with Triple Eggs and Steamed Rice
– A drink of your choice: Handmade Bitter Gourd Lemon Tea or Handmade Lemon Tea

Available exclusively at The Cathay outlet.

Taste Myeongdong @ Taste Orchard - New Food Hall with 7 Different Korean Concepts Under One Roof

TasteMyeongdong1

Located along bustling Orchard Road, TASTE Myeongdong is the latest food hall concept that transports diners to the nostalgic, neon-lit streets of Myeongdong, South Korea. Inspired by the vibrant pocha (Korean street bar) culture, this food hall brings together seven distinct concepts, namely O'Bok Bibimbap, Red Cup, Gamtan Express, Singdang Bul Dakbal, Hoho Noodles, Myung Dong Pocha, and Breaders. They offer comforting, affordable, and all-day Korean fare under one roof. By evening, the space transforms into a lively pocha hub with a wide selection of sharing plates perfect for groups.

We visited for their Pocha Set Menu ($95 for 4 pax), available after 5pm. This menu includes a generous spread of Korean street favourites such as Tteokbokki, Fish Cake Soup, Fried Snacks, Gimbap, Chicken Feet, and a choice between Seafood Pajeon or Kimchi Jeon.

TasteMyeongdong2
Singdang Bul Dakbal - Gimbap 4/5

Our meal began with a classic Beef Gimbap. It is fluffy, well-seasoned rice wrapped in crisp seaweed and layered with marinated beef, egg, and vegetables. Lightly brushed with sesame oil and topped with sesame seeds, each bite was aromatic and well-balanced. It is a comforting introduction to our pocha feast.

TasteMyeongdong5
Singdang Bul Dakbal - Tteokbokki 4/5

Due to its often overly firm texture, I typically steer clear of Tteokbokki in Singapore. Thankfully, this version was a pleasant surprise. The rice cakes were delightfully soft and chewy, soaking up the spicy-sweet gochujang sauce with just the right amount of heat. It is a nostalgic nod to authentic Korean street food.

TasteMyeongdong13
Singdang Bul Dakbal - Fried Snacks 3/5

The Fried Platter included an assortment of vegetables, shrimp, sweet potato, and squid fritters. While each was golden and crisp, the squid stood out for its firm and bouncy texture. It was a satisfying side dish, though it could benefit from a lighter batter for better overall balance.

TasteMyeongdong10
Singdang Bul Dakbal - Chicken Feet 3.8/5

Served in a rich, dry spicy sauce, the Korean-style Chicken Feet brought bold, tongue-tingling flavours. It was a unique and surprisingly enjoyable experience — the gelatinous texture of the chicken feet complemented the fiery seasoning. While it may be acquired for some, it's worth trying if you're adventurous.

TasteMyeongdong11
Myung Dong Pocha - Fish Cake Soup 4/5

Nothing says Korean street food like a steaming bowl of Eomuk (Fish Cake Soup). The comforting, umami-rich broth and soft fish cakes instantly transported me back to my Myeongdong trip. It is a simple but deeply satisfying dish, especially on a cool evening.

TasteMyeongdong8
Myung Dong Pocha - Seafood Pajeon 3/5

We opted for the Seafood Pajeon over the Kimchi version. While the edges had a slight crisp, the pancake leaned a bit too doughy for my preference. That said, it was generously studded with seafood and paired nicely with a tangy dipping sauce. Fans of Korean pancakes may appreciate it more.

TasteMyeongdong21
Breaders - Original, Crumble Blueberry, Pecan Walnut 3.8/5

Rounding off the meal on a sweet note, we sampled three flavours from Breaders, a popular Korean custard tart brand: Original, Crumble Blueberry, and Pecan Walnut. Unlike traditional egg tarts, these are best enjoyed chilled, featuring a creamy, molten-like centre with a delicate, flaky crust. They're less eggy, more dessert-like, and perfect for those who enjoy a soft, custardy texture. With a total of six flavours (including Sweet Potato, Earl Grey, and Blueberry Cream Cheese), there's something for every palate.

TASTE Myeongdong captures the heart and soul of Korean street food culture with an accessible, family-friendly format. Whether craving comforting classics or looking to wind down with pocha-style bites and soju, this food hall brings a slice of Korea to the heart of Singapore.

Group

Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant, a household name in Singapore, has opened a new outlet at Anchorvale Village, bringing its legendary dim sum closer to residents in the Sengkang area. Known for its consistently delicious offerings and bustling atmosphere, Swee Choon's new outlet introduces a slew of exclusive dishes on top of the usual classics.

Triple BBQ Meat 2
Triple Combination of BBQ Meat 4/5

One of the new outlet exclusives is the BBQ Meat selection. You can pair these with rice or noodles or enjoy them on their own. We had the Triple Combination of BBQ Meat ($23.90), featuring Honey Char Siew, Garlic Roasted Chicken, and Roasted Pork. The Honey Char Siew was nicely glazed and incredibly tender, earning high marks. The Garlic Roasted Chicken surprised us with its crispy skin and tender meat, and the fragrant chicken rice we paired with it was perfect. Although we wished for more crackling on the skin of the Roasted Pork, it was nicely seasoned and not too salty.

Siew Mai 2
Siew Mai 3.8/5

Salted Egg Custard Bun 2
Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bao 4/5

Baked BBQ Char Siew Bun 2
Baked BBQ Char Siew Bao 3/5

No visit to Swee Choon is complete without sampling their classic dim sum items. We started with the Siew Mai ($2.90/2pcs), which was juicy and meaty, packed with ingredients. The Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bao ($5.80/3pcs) featured soft, fluffy dough filled with a sweet and savoury salted egg custard that oozed like lava, making it a delightful treat. For those seeking a texture contrast, the Baked BBQ Char Siew Bao ($4.90/2pcs) offered a crusty exterior with a fluffy interior filled with chunky sweet BBQ char siew.

Mee Suah Kueh 3
Swee Choon Signature Mee Suah Kueh 3/5

A must-try is the Swee Choon Signature Mee Suah Kueh ($3.30/2pcs), which provides a delightful textural contrast with its crispy exterior and soft interior.

Sichuan Chili Oil Dumpling 2
'Sichuan Chilli Oil Dumpling 3/5

The Sichuan Chilli Oil Dumplings ($5.90) was drenched in fragrant Sichuan chilli oil. These plump and juicy dumplings, encased in soft, translucent skins, offered a spicy kick.

Tofu Bomb 2

Tofu Bomb 3
Tofu Bomb 4/5

An innovative take on traditional dim sum, the Tofu Bomb ($4/2pcs) featured a crispy exterior filled with flavourful ingredients and a slight spiciness from the mixed chopped chilli inside, making it a flavour bomb in itself.

Lychee Prawn Cheese Ball 2

Lychee Prawn Cheese Ball 3
Lychee Prawn Cheese Ball 3.5/5

Another creative dish is the Lychee Prawn Cheese Ball ($3.90/2pcs), shaped to resemble the lychee fruit with a delightful crispy coat. It’s filled with cheese for an elevated taste profile, though I wished the prawn flavour was more pronounced.

Sweet Potato Balls and Egg Tarts 2

Sweet Potato Salted Egg Custard Ball
Sweet Potato Salted Egg Custard Ball 4/5, Baked Hong Kong Egg Tart 3.5/5

We ended our meal with some sweet delights. The Sweet Potato Salted Egg Custard Ball ($3.90/2pcs) was a highlight with its oozing lava filling and mochi-like chewy texture. The Baked Hong Kong Egg Tart ($3.50) offered a sweet, creamy, and eggy custard encased in a buttery tart, making for a satisfying end to our meal.

Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant's new outlet at Anchorvale Village continues its tradition of delivering delicious dim sum while introducing exciting new dishes. It's a welcome addition to the Sengkang dining scene, sure to delight both long-time fans and new customers alike.
