Kok Sen Restaurant @ City Square Mall - Eight Year Bib Gourmand Awardee Opens Second Outlet

KokSenCitySquare10

The renowned Kok Sen Restaurant, a household name at Keong Saik with an impressive eight-year streak on the prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand list, has expanded with a second outlet at City Square Mall. This milestone marks a new chapter for the family-run restaurant, which has been serving authentic Cantonese delights for over 54 years, spanning three generations.

Beyond its signature classics, the City Square Mall outlet also debuts exclusive dishes, offering both loyal patrons and new diners something fresh to look forward to.

Crispy Smoked Tea Duck 4/5

A highly anticipated new dish, the Crispy Smoked Tea Duck ($25/$50), is available in limited quantities daily. The duck is meticulously marinated for at least 8 hours in a secret sauce that deeply infuses the meat with rich flavours before being air-dried for 2-3 hours to remove excess moisture. It is then smoked and deep-fried to perfection, resulting in an incredibly light, crispy skin that complements the tender, fragrant meat.

Kok Sen's Original Big Prawn Thick Beehoon White Soup 4/5

Another City Square Mall exclusive is Kok Sen's Original Big Prawn Thick Beehoon White Soup ($19/$38/$57). This comforting dish features large, succulent prawns and thick rice vermicelli, all immersed in a robust, non-spicy superior prawn broth. Unlike the spicier, well-loved version at the Keong Saik outlet, this rendition stays true to the Wong Family's original recipe, which has been passed down for generations and enjoyed during festive celebrations, birthdays, and family gatherings.

Claypot Yong Tau Foo 4/5

A must-try staple at Kok Sen, the Claypot Yong Tau Foo ($18/$27/$36) is a hearty, comforting dish that highlights freshly made stuffed beancurd, brinjal, capsicum, and red chilli, all generously filled with a flavorful mix of squid and prawn paste. The dish is finished with a fragrant, umami-rich bean sauce, making every bite a perfect balance of textures and flavors.

Deep Fried "Yu Gai" 3.5/5

The Deep Fried "Yu Gai" ($20/$30/$40) features thick, fleshy strips of deep-fried Toman fish meat fried to a golden crisp. What truly elevates this dish is the Chef's special dipping sauce, which enhances the fish's natural sweetness and adds a bold depth of flavour.

KokSenCitySquare25
Roasted Pork with Black Sauce 4.2/5

The Roasted Pork with Black Sauce ($18/$27/$36) is a must-order for those who love a flavourful, saucy dish. Crispy, freshly roasted pork is wok-fried with caramelised onions and a rich, savoury-sweet black sauce, making it the perfect accompaniment to a bowl of steamed rice.

With its rich culinary heritage, new location, and exclusive dishes, Kok Sen's second outlet at City Square Mall is a fantastic addition to Singapore's food scene. Whether you're a long-time fan of their Michelin Bib Gourmand classics or eager to try their new, exclusive offerings, this expansion ensures that the Wong family's time-honoured flavours continue to delight old and new generations alike.

Soup Restaurant Celebrates 33rd Anniversary with New Dishes and Promotions

Samsui Ginger Chicken 1

A beloved staple in Singapore’s dining scene, Soup Restaurant has been serving comforting, home-cooked food for 33 years, and their iconic Samsui Ginger Chicken remains a fan favourite. To commemorate this milestone, Soup Restaurant rolled out four exciting new dishes alongside enticing anniversary promotions.

Tiger Prawn with Bee Hoon Soup 1
Tiger Prawn with Bee Hoon Soup 4/5

The hearty Tiger Prawn with Bee Hoon ($18.90) boasts a rich prawn broth, simmered for over four hours to achieve deep umami flavours, lightly enhanced with ginger. While the prawns could be larger, the overall experience is satisfying and perfect for a comforting meal.

Choy Sum with Minced Pork and Sweet Turnip 1
Choy Sum with Minced Pork and Sweet Turnip 3/5

A simple yet wholesome Choy Sum with Minced Pork and Sweet Turnip ($15.90) featuring fresh, crunchy choy sum paired with savoury minced pork. However, the flavour of the sweet turnip was barely noticeable, leaving us wanting more from this otherwise homey dish.

Other new additions include Honey Glazed Ginger Chicken ($17.90) and Steamed Fish Slices with Samsui Ginger Sauce ($18.90), the latter showcasing the restaurant's famed ginger sauce.

Samsui Ginger Chicken 2
Samsui Ginger Chicken 4/5

No visit to Soup Restaurant is complete without their signature Samsui Ginger Chicken. The tender poached chicken, perfectly paired with their fragrant ginger sauce, is a must-have that never disappoints.

Soup 1
Soup of the Day 3.5/5

The Shark Fin Melon Soup we tried was a light and refreshing option. The melon was cooked just right, soft yet intact, adding a nice texture to the otherwise simple broth.

Claypot Tofu 1
Claypot Tofu 3/5

The Claypot Tofu features tender tofu in a savoury gravy, ideal for pairing with a bowl of rice. While it's a comforting dish, it lacks a standout element that elevates it beyond the ordinary.

Dessert 1
Dessert of the day 2.8/5

We concluded with the White Fungus with Gingko Nuts, but unfortunately, the texture of the white fungus fell short, lacking the desired softness, and the overall flavour profile was underwhelming.

Mr Fish @ Smith Street Food Centre - No Milk Added Fish Head Bee Hoon

IMG_7089ed

It has been a while since I have gone back to Smith Street Food Centre. This time I was actually there to check out Kent Thong Turtle Soup, but decided to dropped by Mr Fish at the same food centre after reading raving reviews of their Cantonese style fish soup.

Fish Head Bee Hoon 4.2/5

I am sure you have eaten at many fish soup stalls. The first thing they do during ordering they will always asked you whether you want to add milk to your soup. At Mr Fish, a clear sign at the front of their stall states "No Milk Added!" in red. Why so?

IMG_7088ed

The reason for the raving reviews is because of the traditional way the stall prepares the fish soup. The stock undergone long hours of boiling to get that creamy and silky texture. Unlike many other stalls that add milk to achieve it. The portion of the Fish Head Bee Hoon ($5) is also very generous. I like the addition of cabbage for a refreshing touch on top of the richness of the soup.

Braised Bitter Gourd and Sliced Fish 3.8/5

Besides the fish head bee hoon, we also ordered a plate of Braised Bitter Gourd and Sliced Fish ($8) to try. Cooked in a black bean sauce, this is a comforting, home cooked food. If the black bean sauce could carry more depth, then this will be excellent.

Be prepared to wait at Mr Fish as they will come your order dish by dish. We waited for almost half an hour to our two orders. The good thing is you need not queue, they will serve the food to your table.

Souperlicious @ CityLink Mall

This is my first time at Souperlicious and I found the concept very similar to Soup Spoon. I ordered the combo meal which came with a choice of a regular soup plus a small salad, pasta or half sandwich/wrap with a free drink at $9.90. I had the beef goulash and small meatball pasta.

The beef goulash was a thick and rich soup cooked with paprika. It was filled with stewed beef cubes, carrots and vegetables. A comfort and filling meal alone. For the spaghetti, it was norm but the meatball stood out.

Beef Goulash 4/5

Meatball Spaghetti 4/5

The turn off about Souperlicious is the price on the menu does not include GST. I ended up paying $10.60 for my combo meal instead of $9.90. The food was ordered, paid and collected at the counter so I was not expecting the price is GST exclusive.

Dragon Robe Crab Roe Dumpling @ Centrepoint

Here is another food court by Kopitiam known as The Basement at Centrepoint. This stall caught my attention as I have not seen it before. I had their signature Eight Treaure Duck Soup and Xiao Long Bao.

The Eight Treasure Duck Soup was light and refreshing. However I did feel deceive by the "eight treasure", it was basically bee hoon soup with a slice of duck meat, quail egg and some vegetarian ingredients that made up the "eight treasure". The Xiao Long Bao however was quite good but got to wait 5 minutes to heat up.
