Superfood Kitchen @ Raffles City - Making Nutritional Bowls Accessible to All

Superfood Kitchen has one mission - to improve the quality of living by making nutrition accessible to all. Their latest outlet is located at Raffles City, a dual-concept with their sister brand, The Green Bar. It is the first in Singapore to integrate a nutrition calculator into its self-ordering kiosks so that you can customize your diet based on your personal nutritional requirements based on Calories, Protein, Carbohydrates and Fats. The main offerings are Superbowl (from $7.90), Superburrito (from $6.90) and Salad (from $6.90). In addition, you can add your desired supplements to beef up the nutritional intake for each main.

Mediterranean Delight 4/5

There are six types of Superbowls featuring essential proteins such as chicken, beef and tofu. We tried the Mediterranean Delight, which comprises sous vide chicken breast as the protein, along with quinoa, tomato salsa, hummus peanut butter, pickled red onions, and roasted sea-salt pumpkin, served with garlic aioli dressing. The chicken breast was moist and tender. So even if you are a sceptic, do give it a try. The quinoa, being cooked in vegetable broth, was flavourful. The hummus here is made using peanut butter instead of tahini. Hence it lends a depth of nuttiness to this very light and refreshing grain bowl.

Crispy Tofu Balls

I also added other supplements such as Guacamole, Chilli Pickled Pineapple and Crispy Tofu Balls. The tofu balls are one of The Green Bar's specialities, perfect for a meatless option.

Smoked Duck Mango Tango 3.8/5

For Salads, a popular choice is the Smoked Duck Mango Tango ($14.90), featuring thick cuts of smoked duck, mangoes, beets, capsicums, and roasted cashews, served with citron dressing. The dressing complements the savoury and unctuous smoked duck with an additional drizzle of balsamic for extra acidity.

DIY Superbowl with Cajun Chicken

We also DIY a Superbowl (from $7.90/1 grain+ 1 protein + 3 supplements + 1 dressing) by choosing our preferred grain and supplements - Cajun Chicken, Quinoa, Burnt Broccoli, Beets, Mango and a citrusy Orange Vinaigrette. The Burnt Broccoli was tasty, and per additional portion is only 80cent! The Cajun Chicken was tender as well.

IKO @ Neil Road - Transform Into Restaurant And Bar Dripping With Style And Seasonality

Hit by Phase 2 Heightened Alert and the various COVID restrictions in its initial opening, IKO at Neil Road has recently reopened with a brand new kitchen team and menu. The restaurant has even gotten Dylan Ong, chef-owner of Franco-Asian restaurant The Masses, as consultant chef in its transformation.

Fresh Oyster 4/5

We started with the Fresh Oyster from Japan. You can give the oyster a shot of sake (+$5) to perk up the enjoyment. It is my first time having oyster and sake pairing. It is a refreshing way of enjoying the oyster with the sake, giving it a subtle sweetness.

Great to go with a few cups of sake is the Charred Edamame ($12) paired with oyster leaf, wasabi powder and wasabi rice,

Tempura Jalapeno 4.2/5

A delightful snack I enjoyed a lot is the Tempura Jalapeno ($9) coated in a light and crispy tempura batter. Be careful when you bite into the crunchy jalapeno, as it is stuffed with hot, oozing cheese.

We tried the Salmon ($19) and Scallop ($18) under the sashimi section. The presentation of the salmon sashimi is pretty with the orange and green colour combination from the kiwi ravigote, dill oil and chive. However, I felt it lacked a bit of zest to elevate the freshness.

I preferred the scallop sashimi more as it carries more punches in flavour. We have mixed opinions on the gin compressed watermelon though. I felt the gin infusion of the watermelon gives the scallop a bitter finishing. But, on the other hand, if it is without the alcohol, the watermelon's sweetness may give it a more refreshing touch instead.

Tempura Soft Shell Crab 4/5

The Tempura Soft Shell Crab ($14) is usually enjoyed with mayonnaise. Still, IKO has given it an elevated twist, pairing it with avocado puree and soy cured egg yolk.

A5 Wagyu Sukiyaki 4.5/5

The A5 Wagyu Sukiyaki ($26) is a beautiful dish on the menu. There is shiitake mushroom, leek, scallion, egg yolk, and perilla in the bowl. However, the highlight has to be the fatty and tender A5 Wagyu beef.

The IKO Roll ($24) is a delicious work of art whereby foie gras, maitake, and fig are rolled a la sushi to showcase the balance of flavours. It is finished with a shower of truffle shaving to top the enjoyment.

A pasta dish on the menu is the Bucatini with charred firefly squid, ikura, tobiko and bottarga. It is a bowl of slurping goodness that is worthy of your calories.

A signature at IKO is the Not Your Ordinary Rice Bowl. There are five different bowls - Classic, Simple, Fun, Sexy and Luxury. I had the tasting portion of the Luxury Bowl ($42). It comes brimming with luxe and premium seafood such as otoro, maguro, salmon, ikura, tobiko, snow crab and uni on top of the seaweed rice

We had the Lamb Loin ($29) from the grill, which is incredibly tender and juicy, stewed in a delicious broth made from 10 different kinds of mushrooms.

Wrapping up our dinner at IKO is the Matchamisu ($13). It may look sort of messy, but this is one yummy dessert to save some space for.

Of course, what is a meal without some drinks to bring out the food flavours? As for the drinks list, it is largely sake and whisky-driven. The sake collection is carefully sourced from around Japan, regions such as Kyoto, Fushimi, Niigata, Myagi, and more, so take note, sake enthusiasts.

Go for The Torii ($16) concocted with bourbon, yuzu juice and ginger ale for a sweet-sourish cocktail choice. Or the Wild Night ($16) for those who want a little more zing in their drinks, with wild berries syrup and green tea spiked with whiskey. The petals atop are not just for decor purposes but are edible as well. We'll be back for more - and the fact that all the cocktails are priced around $16++.

Broiled Crab Chowder 4.2/5

We started off the meal with the Broiled Crab Chowder ($12) packed with generous amounts of soft shell crab and crab meat in a creamy briny broth, sprinkled with just shallots and olive oil to lend a nice aroma to the dish. We love how the soft shell crab still retains its crispiness throughout, which also adds a textural dimension to the crab chowder.

Bonded Unagi & Foie Gras 4.5/5

One not-to-be-missed dish is the Bonded Unagi & Foie Gras ($16), where both eastern and western influences come together to form a great bond between the two popular delicacies. Each bite has an umami taste and literally melts on your tongue. I would willingly pay to have this again and again.

Next, we had the Torii Cocktails ($15) which comes with fresh diced sashimi and creamy uni over sweet shrimps, complete with caviar and a special dressing that gave a subtle sweetness to the dish.

The Torii Sashimi ($23) is definitely a steal, consisting of the freshest assortment of fish such as the raw salmon, sweet shrimp, kampachi, scallops, tuna belly, finished with a yuzu dressing.

Aburi Salmon Yuzu 4.2/5, Tiger Prawn 3.8/5

There is only a small selection of sushi rolls, with 3 maki choices. We got to try the Aburi Salmon Yuzu ($13) and Tiger Prawn ($11). We absolutely love the Aburi Salmon Yuzu, with a layer of perfectly torched salmon wrapped around another big chunk of salmon sashimi within. The addition of cucumber, pistachio nuts, and tobiko gave it a crunch. Complete with a slightly tangy yuzu dressing, each bite is simply sensational - packed full of the salmon freshness and umami-ness. The Tiger Prawn pales a little in comparison, but we still enjoy the combination of crispy deep-fried tiger prawn, creamy avocado, shrimp roe, and unagi sauce to give it an extra oomph.

Wagyu Bone Marrow 3.8/5

The Wagyu Bone Marrow ($15) is large and loaded with the gelatinous cream of the marrow which has a unique buttery taste and a rich, robust flavour. While the bone marrow fat was enjoyable, we wished there would be some sides to it to provide a contrast or cushioning to the sheer richness.

Stone Rice Bowl 3.8/5

The Stone Rice Bowl ($18) came in a piping hot bowl of shrimp, unagi, Japanese scallop, seaweed, tobiko, onsen tamago over a bed of Japanese rice. Take a quick snap and mix all the ingredients in the bowl, as it is best mixed and eaten hot.

Torii has over 20 skewer items on their menu. With a drink at bay, diners can pair it among the wide range of grilled items and eat to their heart's content. We had the Wings ($3) seasoned with just sea salt, and the tender Wagyu Striploin ($3). Each bite is imbued with a smoky depth and would leave you craving for more. The Garlic with crispy skin ($3) is not your commonly seen food items in the form of skewers, but once you start, you can’t stop.

Beef Donburi 4.2/5

One of my favourites is the Beef Donburi ($25). The tender beef slices have a nice smoky charred exterior, paired perfectly with the soft creamy foie gras, and the addition of truffle elevated the whole dish. Mix it all in with the onsen egg which binds everything perfectly together, and we could not stop till we have wiped the bowl clean. For a more premium experience, you can top up an additional $5 for an extra foie gras, or $18 for additional uni.

Kagoshima Sirloin A5 4.5/5

The highlight of the night is the Kagoshima Sirloin A5 ($68). The hefty price tag is justified by the stellar quality of the steak - tender, juicy slices with a slight nicely charred exterior that just melts in your mouth. It's a definite must-order here if you're hankering for some good steaks. We recommend topping up $7 for an additional pan-seared foie gras or scallop.

These lively casual bars are aplenty in Singapore, and there's nowhere better to kick back and have some Japanese bites full of umami goodness with some drinks to go along with. Torri Izakaya is the perfect place for friends who gather for a good time or office workers who are looking for some after-work drinks, tie-loosened, hair down. With a huge 68-indoor seater and 12-outdoor seater, it is also available to cater for events from commercial events to party celebrations.

Supergreek @ Raffles City - Singapore's First Greek Fast-Casual Concept

Have a taste of Greek flavours and traditions at Supergreek. Nothing fancy but wholesome souvlaki grain bowls, pita wraps, and salads loaded with ingredients and dips freshly made daily such as traditional Greek hummus, yoghurt avocado sauce and even Harissa. And speaking of yoghurt, Supergreek serves its proprietary homemade authentic Greek yoghurt, made daily through a process that spans 30 hours. Souvlaki is the highlight of Supergreek’s menu offerings. An everyday Greek street food of small pieces of meat or vegetables grilled on a skewer, Supergreek dresses it up with herbs such as oregano and dill, as well as tomatoes, onions and Greek vinaigrette, then grilled, roasted, or steamed, but never fried. Conceptualised by the team behind Omakase Burger and Picnic Food Park, the chef imparting his knowledge and culture into the food is Head Chef Altin “Alex” Mata, an Albanian immigrant who ran his own Greek restaurants in Athens, Greece for 20 years.

Lamb Kebab 4.2/5

The meat that best represents the concept is this Lamb Kebab ($10.90). I'm definitely not a red red-meat person, but the combination of the souvlaki of minced lamb kebab, the zesty house-made hummus and the spicy-sweet harrisa did get me thinking about it for a couple of days. The souvlaki of minced lamb was well-seasoned with spices and herbs, and I was surprised by how juicy it was when I took my first bite. The harrissa sauce spread on the pita was punchy and bright, with just a hint of heat. Another key element is the specially imported Greek pita bread - soft with a very toasty aroma. To balance the richness of the meat, the accompanying ingredients are basmati rice, grilled zucchini and eggplant, purple and white cabbage, cherry tomatoes and onions, with a little drizzle of orange vinaigrette.

Fresh Seafood Roasted Barramundi 4.2/5

With eight types of souvlaki grain bowls, you can choose to enjoy these combinations within a traditional pita, or in a hearty salad. We had Roasted Barramundi ($12.90) as a salad, which seemed to be one of the most popular picks. Within the bowl are a dill-marinated Barramundi fillet, quinoa, mixed salad, arugula, mashed potato, roasted broccoli and cauliflower, onions, cherry tomatoes and Greek vinaigrette. The Barramundi fillet was very tender and moist, and the mashed potato was a texture boost to the salad. And I think what makes this salad so appealing to our appetite is the creamy homemade Parmigiano sauce that binds the ingredients together.

Grilled Steak 3/5

Grilled Steak ($13.90) uses a premium USDA choice roast beef, paired with house-made Tzatziki and hummus, and served with brown rice, arugula, lettuce, roasted broccoli and sweet potatoes with a sprinkle of sunflower seeds. Using its housemade yoghurt as the base, the Tzatziki was refreshing with bits of pickled cucumber, and its creaminess goes well with the beef. The steak was a bit tough to chew though, which is a pity.

Grilled Chicken Steak 4/5

Grilled Chicken Steak ($9.90) salad gets a lot more exciting when you have a dollop of creamy Greek yoghurt avocado sauce and zingy hummus to go with. Grilling the chicken breast accentuates its herbs marination along and releases a hint of smoky flavour, which complement the smoky-sweet grilled capsicum and roasted pumpkin.

The Roasted Vegan 3.8/5

For a 100% Plant-Based meal, the Roasted Vegan ($7.90) hydrates your body with a myriad of crunchy vegetables - cured beetroot, purple and white cabbage, roasted broccoli and cauliflower, corn, cucumber, onions, cherry tomatoes and quinoa, bind together with a dollop of creamy house-made hummus and roasty mango capsicum sauce. A dash of orange vinaigrette at the end makes it even more refreshing.

Greek Classic 4/5

Not just as a base for its sauce, the triple-strained greek yoghurt has a texture almost like dry ricotta cheese, rich and creamy, making it a very suitable choice for a healthy snack or dessert. To appreciate it's natural milky taste of the yoghurt, go for the Greek Classic ($4.90), fresh Greek yoghurt topped with the classic pairing of honey and walnuts.

Farmers And Chefs @ Singapore Conference Hall - A Wholesome Dining Place For You And Your Little Ones

Visited Farmers and Chefs located within Singapore Conference Hall in Shenton Way on a rainy evening, and that became one of the most relaxing dining experience I ever had for a long time. Unexpected in many ways, especially in the middle of the CBD area. Set below a canopy, surrounded by planters and rustic wooden crafts exhibited by local wood and clay crafter, Farmers and Chefs are just as charming as any of those cafes and bistros nestled in parks and gardens. Mindful dining is what this cafe is all about, and with a strictly no deep-frying rule, they are not just serious about what's offered to you, but to your little ones as well.

The Farmer's Breakfast 4/5

For just $10, The Farmer’s Breakfast comes with a hearty portion of sous vide herbed boneless chicken thigh slices (no cured meats!), alongside scrambled eggs, grilled Roma tomatoes, sauteed button mushrooms and crisp Rosti with a dollop of Farmer’s Soy Mayonnaise. What's notable is the housemade rosti that is prepared a la minute. Its crisp exterior is such a good match with their Farmer’s Soy Mayonnaise, which is possibly best dairy-free mayonnaise I ever had and even better than the regular one - perfect consistency and acidity, without that oily aftertaste. No wonder they have to trademark it. The scrambled eggs are topped with clarified butter, which makes it extra creamy and indulgent.

Teriyaki Chicken 4/5

For lunch, from 12pm to 2pm, you can get a healthy Lunch Bowls from $10 onwards. Six proteins are available for selection, each wholesome with lettuce, broccoli, tomato and onsen egg. The Teriyaki Chicken ($10) rice bowl comes with a chicken thigh lightly glazed with home-made teriyaki sauce. It was moist and tender, with skin lightly crisp. I really appreciate the lightness of the sauce, compared to commercial ones which tend to be sweeter.

Yakiniku Beef 3.5/5

For a bigger appetite, the Yakiniku Beef ($14) rice bowl comes with thick slices of stir-fried striploin coated in a home-made yakiniku sauce. The yakiniku sauce was light and not too salty, flavouring the beef just right without overpowering it. The rice in each bowl was fluffy and pearly, and really yummy after sopping up the sauces. It will have been more ideal if the cherry tomatoes have been sauteed or roasted beforehand to bring out their flavours.

Truffle Mushroom Cream with Asparagus 3.5/5

Pasta dishes are also available. A classic combination of cream and mushroom, the Truffle Mushroom Cream with Asparagus ($14). The mushrooms were well sauteed, which released all their earthy flavours into the pasta. I like the addition of the asparagus, which lends a crunch and a brightness to the dish.

Aglio Olio 3/5

The humble Aglio Olio Pasta ($9) speaks volume with its fiery touches. The combination of both dried and bird’s eye chilli gave a more rounded taste of heat and spices, along with the right dose of minced garlic. Adding on the sautéed prawns ($13) is ideal. A child-friendly non-spicy version is also available.

The Pomodoro Pasta ($10) is a simple everyday pasta made with onions, tomato and basil, cream and parmesan cheese. I find the sauce lacking in intensity and sharpness of a creamy tomato sauce.

Kurobuta Pork Loin 4/5

As a casual dining cafe, Farmers and Chefs also dish out very high-quality mains too. Kurobuta Pork Loin ($18) features a pan-seared Kurobuta pork loin served with a house-made red wine apple compote, sautéed potatoes, broccoli, soy sauce onion, and capsicum. Nicely seared on the exterior, with some charred fats at the edges and the loin was done with a moist and pinky core. I love the tangy and sweet red wine apple compote, as well as the well-roasted capsicum that complements the richness of the meat really well.

A no-dessert menu is also a conscious decision made by the team as well, as for now. However, I find the Homemade Barley ($2), that is sweetened with rock sugar, a perfect alternative to a bowl of beancurd barley.

For your little ones, The Secret Children's Menu offers mini breakfast sandwiches, mains with fruit, mini rice bowls and organic pasta. A mix and match option for a customised meal is available as well.
