Usher in the Chinese New Year with lively energy and festivities at Meow Barbecue, a popular Chinese cat-themed barbecue restaurant known for its cute meat platters designed to look like cat food cans. Gather your friends and indulge in a festive feast specially crafted to celebrate the Year of the Snake.

Yusheng-1

Meow bbq can platter-1
CNY-exclusive Meow BBQ 2025 Can Platter

Of course, the highlight of the evening was the CNY-exclusive Meow BBQ 2025 Can Platter. This festive platter opens up with fanfare to reveal six cuts of meat and signatures, perfect for grilling and sharing (suggested 2-3 pax). From 13 Jan to 9 Feb, the Lucky Snake Can Platter is available at a special price of $88++ (U.P. $128) at both Bugis+ and VivoCity outlets.

Meow bbq can platter-4

The platter consists of:

• Thick Cut Iberico Pork Belly (120g)
• Wagyu Beef Short Ribs (120g)
• Thick Cut Pork Collar (120g)
• Meow Signature Spicy Chicken with Szechuan Pepper (150g)
• Diamond Cut Marinated Beef Ribs (120g)
• Rose Ox Tongue (100g)

Meat cooking-4

The platter offers a variety of delicious barbecue options, and the meat quality is satisfying. I was particularly intrigued by the signature spicy chicken with Szechuan pepper. Its bold, flavourful kick was delicious; I've not had BBQ chicken like this before. We also got to try ox tongue, which was a first for some at the table. You may opt to DIY or request that the staff help you grill the meat.

Meat cooking-6

With every Lucky Snake Can Platter purchased, customers are entitled to a chance to try their luck at Meow Barbecue's Chinese New Year Hong Bao Wall, a sure-win lucky draw offering a chance to win real gold, along with other exclusive prizes, including a cute pair of chopsticks and bowls adorned with adorable cat-themed designs, a limited-edition Meow Barbecue Exclusive 2025 Calendar, dining vouchers and other festive goodies!

Meat cooking-5

Customers also stand a chance to participate in the lucky draw for every $150++ spent and twice the chance if they spend $300++ on a single receipt.

Kimchi cheese pork belly-2

We also tried the Pork Belly with Kimchi and Cheese, prepared by layering kimchi and cheese onto the pork belly, then folding and grilling it — almost like a grilled cheese sandwich! The result is a mouthwatering pocket of melty cheese, and kimchi enveloped in tender pork belly. The staff then sliced it into portions for us to enjoy. This was something quite unique and enjoyable.

Cheese corn-1

We also participated in the Cheese Pull Challenge: Get 50% off every Cheese Corn (U.P. $6.80) ordered by simply tagging @meow_bbq on Instagram or Meow Barbecue on Facebook. Pull the cheese to 50cm or more to enjoy it for free! Honestly, the dish is rather simple, just consisting of melted cheese and corn. However, if you’re looking to have some fun, this could be an entertaining game to play at the table. Roll it well before stretching to ensure that you can get it above 50cm. In fact, our table stretched it to over a metre!

Dessert-2
Signature Caramel Pudding, Strawberry Cat Paw Jelly Pudding

For dessert, we had their Signature Caramel Pudding and Strawberry Cat Paw Jelly Pudding. I preferred the Caramel Pudding, which had a lovely custard texture and flavour. The Strawberry Jelly, though undeniably cute, was way too sweet for my taste.

Yusheng-3

Meow Barbecue has a playful and quirky vibe, with feline-themed décor and friendly staff that adds to the overall fun experience. The grilled meat served is fresh and tasty, and the prices are rather reasonable, making it a good choice for gatherings the next time those BBQ cravings strike!

Whitegrass @ CHIJMES - Classic French Fare with a Contemporary Japanese Twist

Omi wagyu-4

Whitegrass, a Michelin-starred restaurant located in the historic CHIJMES, offers a luxurious dining experience under the guidance of Chef Takuya Yamashita. Specialising in French-Japanese cuisine, the restaurant blends the refinement and complexity of French culinary techniques with the simplicity and balance of Japanese flavours. Using only the freshest seasonal ingredients, Whitegrass delivers a sophisticated dining experience that honours the finest qualities of each ingredient they place on your plate.

"Nature has and always will be my biggest inspiration."
– Chef Takuya Yamashita

Gingerbread kombucha-2

We indulged in the Gastronomic Festive Menu ($318++ per person), which has 11 courses. For those looking to elevate their experience further, a Sommelier's pairing is available for $198++ per person. We opted for non-alcoholic drinks instead and enjoyed our festive gingerbread kombucha.

Amusebouche -5
Amuse Bouche 4.5/5

To begin with, we were served the Amuse Bouche, which consists of four indulgent bites. The first was a bite-sized Turkey Pâté paired with foie gras purée and served on a spoon. The second was a delicate little dish of Red Radish and velvety parsnip purée crowned with luxurious Kaluga caviar.

Amusebouche -4
Amuse Bouche

The third was an interesting Blue Cheese Mini Madeleine with Pineapple Jam. I am not usually a fan of blue cheese, but this was manageable and not too overpowering. The fourth was a crispy, deep-fried Lily Bulb Cake, complemented by caramelised onions and lily bulb paste and topped with shredded black truffle.

Bread with bordier butter-2
Bread with Bordier Butter

While waiting for our entrées to be served, we were treated to warm, freshly baked bread served alongside rich, smoked and salted Bordier butter. The bread was really light and fluffy, with a crisp exterior.

Octopus replacing oyster-2
Octopus 4.8/5

For our first entrée, we were offered Octopus with green apple sauce and eggplant instead because we do not take oysters. To my surprise, the octopus was crispy and perfectly flavourful, and the green apple purée offered a slightly tangy accent. Both my dining companion and I agreed that this dish exceeded expectations.

Tachiuo-3
Tachiuo 4.2/5

The next entrée featured Tachiuo, a beltfish found year-round off the coasts of Japan, served with a delicate daikon crust and topped with shredded macadamia nuts. The dish was enhanced with puréed apricots and sundried tomatoes, adding a contrasting acidity for balance.

Prawn-3
Carabinero Prawn 4.2/5

The third entrée featured a Carabinero Prawn in vibrant, cheerful colours reminiscent of a beautiful garden. The large, juicy prawn rested on a bed of cauliflower, broccoli, and tamago (egg) salad, complemented by briny bursts of flavour from Ikura.

Scallop-2
Hokkaido Scallop 4.5/5

The fourth entrée featured a plump Hokkaido Scallop, elegantly topped with rich Bafun uni and thinly sliced Japanese Kyuri (cucumber). Resting in an uni cream sauce, the dish was finished with a few drops of chilli oil. Scallops are one of my favourite seafood, and I greatly enjoyed the flavour and texture of this dish.

Pork collar-2
Mangalica Pork Collar 4.2/5

The fifth entrée brought us back to land with a hearty dish of Mangalica Pork Collar, served alongside winter cabbage and complemented by a rich Sauce Robert, made with chicken jus, white wine, and shallots. With its marbled fat, the pork was very tender and paired nicely with the savoury sauce.

Sesame bread-2
Sesame Bread

After a series of exceptional entrées, we were served another type of bread, this time Sesame Bread. It was warm and crusty, with a light, airy crumb.

Seasonal fish Amadai-3
Japanese Market Fish- Amadai 5/5

Moving on to the Poisson (fish) course, seasonal Japanese market fish is served. For the evening, we savoured the Amadai, a fish renowned for its light, mild flavour and subtle sweet undertones. The skin is crisply cooked by pouring hot oil over its scales, creating a wonderfully light crunch that is highly prized in Japanese cuisine. This technique provides a crunchy contrast to its tender, flaky flesh. I've seen videos of this technique on social media and was pleased to try it for myself. It's really good! The fish is also served with a tasty gobo sauce (burdock root), diced gobo, fennel, and maitake mushrooms.

Pigeon-2
French Pigeon 4.5/5

For the plat principal, we were offered a choice of French Pigeon or Omi Wagyu (supplement $30). Since it's not something I come across so often, I had to try the French Pigeon. France has a long-standing culinary tradition of raising pigeons specifically for cooking, which dates back to the Middle Ages. The meat was indeed very tender. In terms of flavour, it has a subtly gamey taste, certainly stronger than chicken but milder than duck. The pigeon was served with a black mirin sauce and red carrots from Japan.

Omi wagyu-5
Omi Wagyu 4.8/5

For those opting for the Omi Wagyu, the A4 wagyu hails from Shiga Prefecture in Japan. True to its reputation, the marbling is exceptional, and the meat is incredibly juicy. It's accompanied by Kompot pepper from Cambodia, sweet potato purée, and a touch of orange marmalade. In terms of taste and execution, the dish is flawless. However, the portion seems somewhat small, especially considering that it requires an additional $30 supplement.

Avant dessert- cola sorbet-2
Avant Dessert- Japanese Cola Sorbet 4.2/5

Our pre-dessert was a simple yet delightful Sorbet made with premium spiced Japanese Cola. It was complemented by a sweet and smooth strawberry and basil oil sauce, refreshing but without any sourness that I sometimes expect from strawberries. The sorbet cleansed our palate after the heavier flavours of the Plat Principal, preparing our taste buds to fully savour the upcoming dessert.

La France Pear dessert-1
La France Pear 4.8/5

I thoroughly enjoyed La France Pear, a whimsical and aromatic dessert featuring the sweet, natural flavours of the pear. A lovely Japanese pear sorbet and fresh pear cubes are assembled atop a light layer of almond sponge cake. The dish is finished with truffle foam, organic cacao crisp, and a dusting of sugarcane sugar. The flavours were perfect for me, and I found this very memorable.

Mignardise-5
Mignardise 4.8/5

As a final touch, we were presented with a box of Mignardise containing Brown Butter and Almond Financiers, as well as Japanese Mochi Daifuku filled with coconut and raspberry. Whilst mignardise may be an afterthought in some restaurants, Whitegrass delivers a very strong finale to their dining experience.

Mignardise-3

The Japanese Mochi Daifuku was silky and soft, with luscious coconut cream and fresh raspberry filling. I particularly appreciated how Whitegrass infused a local touch into this treat by using coconut.

Mignardise-6

Their Brown Butter and Almond Financier is likely one of the best financiers I've ever had. It is served warm and has a very crispy exterior while retaining a moist interior. It is delightfully fragrant, and the brown butter's rich, nutty aroma makes it irresistible.

take home gift

At the end of the meal, we were offered a choice of coffee or tea and a thoughtful take-home gift of cake to enjoy later and reminisce about our wonderful dinner at Whitegrass. To add a personal touch, Chef Takuya Yamashita also came out to greet the diners, which was a lovely gesture.

I found the standard of the food to be consistently good across all 11 courses. Each course showcased careful attention to detail and a deep respect for the ingredients used. The Gastronomic dinner menu may be a splurge for some, but Whitegrass also offers two lunch menus and a more concise dinner menu option, which works well for those seeking a refined culinary experience at varying price points.

My only minor gripe was with the table arrangement in the main dining room I was in, which I found odd as the tables faced each other in a circular setup. Additionally, the acoustics of the room made the surrounding conversation louder than I would have preferred. For such an exquisite dinner, I would have enjoyed a quieter atmosphere to fully immerse myself in the experience and the conversation with my dining companion. That said, they have another dining space in the next room, which may be quieter than the one I was seated in.

YUN NANS (云海肴) @ NEX - 50% Off Selected Dishes From 24 May to 1 August 2024

Restaurant 1

YUN NANS, a familiar name among Singaporeans, has introduced an innovative concept with YUN NANS Home at three of their heartland outlets. This new venture showcases authentic home recipes from Yunnan, featuring affordable prices and a delightful array of new dishes. One of the standout features of YUN NANS Home is its inviting and cosy atmosphere, reminiscent of a warm family dining experience. It's an ideal setting for enjoying hearty meals with loved ones. We tried an array of new and best-selling signature dishes. Let's start with the new ones.

Garlic Vermicelli Shrimp 1
Garlic Vermicelli Shrimp Casserole 4.5/5

Garlic Vermicelli Shrimp 3

The Garlic Vermicelli Shrimp Casserole ($26.90) is an absolute delight! Bursting with the aroma of fragrant garlic, fresh shrimp, and perfectly cooked vermicelli. This dish evokes memories of the classic Thai Goong Ob Woosen with a distinct Chinese twist. What sets it apart is the innovative use of a casserole, which keeps the dish warm without risking burnt vermicelli at the bottom, a common issue with traditional claypot serving. Every strand of vermicelli is lovingly coated in a flavourful sauce that harmonises the essence of garlic throughout. It is a perfect balance of flavours and textures that is simply irresistible.

Surprise Crispy Rice 1
Surprise Crispy Rice Stir-Fry 4.5/5

Intrigued by the promise of a 'surprise,' we were eager to try the Surprise Crispy Rice Stir-Fry ($11.90) and were pleasantly surprised by its delightful blend of crunchy puffed rice and the added texture of tobiko. Each grain of rice is evenly coated in a savoury soy sauce, enhancing its crunchiness and flavour profile. The dish also boasts a beautiful wok-hei aroma that leaves a lingering desire for more bites.

Loofah Gourd 1
Dried Scallop and Seafood with Loofah Gourd 3.8/5

We were told that this dish uses only young loofah gourd imported directly from Yunnan for its tender texture, paired with dried scallop, dried shrimps and clams. Dried Scallop and Seafood with Loofah Gourd ($15.90) is a comforting home-style dish that evokes memories of a dish prepared by one's mother at home. However, we found the flavour profile to be a touch too subtle for our palates. While the dish showcases fresh ingredients and a comforting texture, we wished for a more robust depth of flavours.

Sichuan Boiled Fish 1
Sichuan Boiled Fish 3.8/5

Bringing Sichuan classics to the table is the Sichuan Boiled Fish ($34.90), which features tender fish slices, crunchy bean sprouts, and black fungus immersed in a numbingly spicy broth. Nestled beneath is vermicelli that absorbs the aromatic broth, adding an extra dimension to the dish's texture. While we appreciated the dish's nuanced flavours and textures, our rating reflects a preference among hardcore Sichuan flavour enthusiasts for a more robust, spicier profile. However, it's worth noting that one of our parties, who typically avoid spicy foods, found this dish surprisingly enjoyable and ranked it among their top three favourites from our tasting session.

La Zi Ji 1
Boneless Spicy Chicken with Sichuan Peppercorns 4/5

Another Sichuan favourite, the Boneless Spicy Chicken with Sichuan Peppercorns ($16.90), showcases bite-sized pieces of boneless chicken thigh deep-fried to a perfect crispness. The chicken is generously coated with fragrant dried chillies and Sichuan peppercorns, delivering a balanced blend of heat and numbing spice. This dish disappeared from our table quickly, leaving us digging for more pieces of chicken that might be hidden underneath the mountain of dried chilli.

Steam Pot Chicken Soup 1
Steam Pot Chicken Soup 4/5

One of YUN NANS' signature dishes is the Steam Pot Chicken Soup ($29.90), prepared in a traditional handmade Jianshui claypot. This exquisite dish is made without a single drop of water, preserving the pure essence of its ingredients to deliver a light yet flavourful chicken soup. The broth is remarkably clean and free from any greasiness. Crunchy bean sprouts with chilli, peppercorn and an appetising spicy sauce accompany this delightful soup. This clever addition allows diners to create a unique cold dish by mixing the tender chicken pieces from the soup, elevating the dining experience.

Poached Pork Collar w Pickled Chili 1
Poached Pork Collar with Pickled Chilli 4.2/5

Lastly, we savoured another signature dish, the Poached Pork Collar with Pickled Chilli ($21.90-S/$27.90-L), a dish that had us reaching for more rice than usual. The broth was exceptionally flavourful with a slight spiciness, and tender pork collar slices were swimming in it. Accompanying the dish were slivers of fried potato that retained their texture and didn't become mushy. The pickled mustard greens elevated the broth, reminiscent of the vibrant flavours of another Sichuan favourite - Suan Cai Yu. This hearty dish delighted our taste buds and warmed our hearts.

Entrance

As part of this new concept, Yunnan has released 20 new home recipes, and selected dishes will be 50% off from 24 May to 1 August 2024. YUN NANS Home is available at its heartland outlets, Nex, Northpoint City, and Westgate.

Other new dishes include the Pork Belly with String Beans Shoots, Home-style Minced Pork with Eggplant Casserole, Spare Ribs Braised with Bitter Melon in Fermented Black Bean Sauce, Shanghai Stir-fried Rice Cake, Mom's Braised Pig's Feet and more.

VENUE by Sebastian @ Downtown Gallery - New Menu Additions to Chef Sebastian’s Range of Contemporary European Cuisine with Mediterranean and Asian Influences

IMG_4309

VENUE by Sebastian at Downtown Gallery, helmed by Chef-Owner Sebastian Ng, has refreshed the menu with new offerings. The casual restaurant's menu highlights contemporary European cuisine with Mediterranean and Asian influences, with items priced very reasonably for its quality.

IMG_4268

In conjunction with its 7th anniversary celebrations, diners can look forward to new menu additions and a newly launched three-course dinner menu available from just $58!

IMG_4301
Roasted Cauliflower Salad 4.5/5

The Roasted Cauliflower Salad ($18) provided a delightful medley of textures. Combined with toasted almonds and jewelled salad, it was finished with a dollop of mint yoghurt, lending a fresh and minty brightness. The addition of pomegranate added a clever touch of sweetness.

IMG_4303
Crispy Potato 4.2/5

A new dish on the menu, this Crispy Potato ($9) was a quick favourite among my dining companions. The crispy, thin shreds of potatoes were paired with toppings of chorizo, sautéed mushroom and a poached egg. We were recommended to break and mix the egg to allow its yolk to coat the dish evenly. It was both slightly earthy and intensely savoury.

IMG_4325
Foie Gras Mousse 4.5/5

For a more luxurious starter, go for the Foie Gras Mousse ($19). I loved how it was very simply presented but tasted otherwise. In fact, all that the creamy and rich foie gras mousse needed to be paired with, was their lightly toasted and soft housemade brioche. I would like more bread to make the most of the spread!

IMG_4304
Farro & Mushrooms 4.8/5

Calling out to fellow mushroom lovers to try this new Farro & Mushrooms ($26) dish! It was profoundly earthy yet not at all overwhelming, unlike how some similar risotto dishes may be. The bed of farro had a slight chew, done with a generous amount of mushrooms and kombu butter, topped with parmigiano reggiano and a poached egg.

IMG_4305

I loved the combination of textures and flavours here. Even though this was meant to be a starter, it would also work perfectly as a main.

IMG_4306
Braised 12 Hours Wagyu Beef Cheek Au Jus

While I couldn't take beef, my dining companions sang praises of the Braised 12-hour Wagyu Beef Cheek Au Jus ($38) for its texture. The beef was served with pomme purée and broccolini.

IMG_4307
Chilean Seabass 4.5/5

The Chilean Seabass ($42) was tender and flaky. It was served with mushroom-bacon ragout and sat in truffle yuzu butter sauce. The flavours were well-balanced, but the portion of seabass could be slightly bigger.

IMG_4308
Iberico Pork Collar 4/5

Our last meat dish was the grilled Iberico Pork Collar ($38). I appreciated the smoky char on the slices, but I found the cuts slightly too chewy. The mint yoghurt lent a refreshing touch.

IMG_4312
Pistachio Financier 4/5

Our first dessert featured the nutty Pistachio Financier ($15) paired with a scoop of grand marnier ice cream and tangy raspberry yoghurt dressing. We heard that the dessert components were all homemade.

IMG_4310
Pear Tart 4.5/5

Next was the unassuming Pear Tart ($15). It had an impressively light and thin pastry with sweet pear bits within, topped with crumble and paired with Bailey ice cream. The crisp texture was a lovely surprise.

IMG_4311
Classic Peach Melba 4/5

Finally, we sampled the new Classic Peach Melba ($15) with vanilla ice cream, chantilly cream and fresh raspberry sauce. This would be a good choice if you're craving for something more sweet to end the meal, although I would have preferred a bit more crunch for texture.
