Yak Kin Yakiniku @ Jalan Riang - Thai-Japanese Yakiniku With Premium Meat Cuts And Fresh Seafood

Yat Kin55

YatKinRestaurant-5

Yak Kin Yakiniku located at Jalan Riang is a Thai-Japanese yakiniku restaurant. The Japanese-style yakiniku offers quality meats and seafood married with Thai spices, marinated meats and Thai dipping sauces.

Yat Kin51
Meat Platter 4.2/5

Yat Kin26
Moo Ping 4.2/5

We kickstart our yakiniku with a meat platter that consists of Rosu (Wagyu A5 Yakiniku), Karubi (Short-Rib Bone-In), Thai Style Pork Neck, Thick Bacon Steak and Moo Ping. I need help pinpointing my favourites as they are all quality meat with their own merits. How fitting it is to have Moo Ping on the menu for the Thai side of things, a staple in Thai cuisine.

Yat Kin22
Pork Tomahawk 4.5/5

A highlight is the Pork Tomahawk. The beautiful piece of pork after grilling has a delightful crunch.

Yat Kin43

Yat Kin47
Scallop with Miso Butter, Surume Ika 4.2/5

Besides the meats, there is a fresh selection of seafood, such as the plump Scallop with Miso Butter, a whole Surume Ika (Japanese flying squid), and even Fresh Oyster.

Yat Kin50
Vegetable & Mushroom Platter 4/5

Complete the grilling experience with a vegetable and mushroom platter such as Enoki Mushroom with Soy Butter in Foil, King Oyster Mushroom, Butter Corn Cup and Coral Lettuce.

Yat Kin7
Kawaebi Karaage 4/5

Yat Kin12
Kaki Fry 4/5

Fitting for a few glasses of beer, highballs, or sake is an array of delightful starters such as the Kawaebi Karaage and Kaki Fry. These deep-fried snacks are ideal bar bites. The kawaebi karaage is sweet and plump, while the deep-fried oysters are bursting with briny juiciness.

Yat Kin5
Yak Kin! Tako Wasabi 4/5

Yat Kin6
Yak Kin! Potato Salad 4.2/5

The Yak Kin! Tako Wasabi is an appetising side dish in which the raw octopus is flavoured with Japanese horseradish. If you can get over the octopus's slimy texture, this is very addictive. As for the Yak Kin! Potato Salad, the smooth and creamy texture is further accentuated in flavour with bonito flakes topping.

Yat Kin15
Ice Plant with Goma Dressing 4.2/5

Yat Kin20
Yam Mamuang 4/5

The Ice Plant with Goma Dressing and Yam Mamuang showcases the best of both worlds. From Japan, we have the crunchy ice plant dressed in a delicious goma sauce, while we have the piquant yam mamuang that comes with a spicy kick.

Donburi King @ Paya Lebar Quarter - Premium Dons With A Trove of Ocean Treasures Air-Flown From Japan

DoburiKing7

Fans of Japanese donburi rejoice, as you can now have your cravings fixed at Donburi King. This is the latest concept by S.H.E Global Group which specialises in authentic Japanese donburi with an extensive menu featuring 14 meticulously crafted seafood and meat selections as well as delicious appetisers, ramen, and Japanese hot dishes.

Situated in the newly opened Paya Lebar Quarter, the joint houses an open kitchen built in an 18-seater intimate setting, where customers can witness the preparation of each don, made with the freshest air-flown sashimi and premium selections of meat.

DoburiKing8
Donburi King Signature Kaisen Don 4.5/5

The limelight is undoubtedly the seafood-loaded bowl of goodness, Donburi King Signature Kaisen Don ($35.50). The overflowing exquisite ingredients consist of 9 different sashimi such as the Salmon, Uni, Hotate (scallop), Akaebi (wild-caught red shrimp), Tako (octopus), Ika (squid), Ikura, Tobiko, and oysters served with Nori seaweed, Tamago (omelette), Gari (marinated ginger), and Wasabi.

DoburiKing3
Spicy Mayomentai Don 4/5

The Spicy Mayomentai Don ($22.80) features thick slices of salmon sashimi and akaebi smothered in a lusciously creamy mentaiko sauce, and blow-torched for a smoky umami flavour. It comes served with Tamago (omelette), Takuan (pickled radish), Gari (marinated ginger), and Wasabi perched atop vinegared sushi rice.

DoburiKing5
Whole Unagi Don 4.2/5

Indulge in generous slabs of grilled unagi chunks from the Whole Unagi Don ($22.80). The unagi is grilled to perfection with a melt-in-your-mouth consistency and is served with Tamago (omelette) and Takuan (pickled radish).

DoburiKing1
Fried Oysters 4/5

If that's not enough, go for their selection of sides such as the Fried Oyster ($3 for 3pc). Deep-fried to crisp golden perfection, the oysters carries a creamy and slightly chewy texture.

DoburiKing9

The fresh flavourful dons at Donburi King promises sheer luxe and indulgence. Other donburi options include the Ootoro Don ($35.50) available in limited quantity daily based on seasonal availability, the Hotate with Ikura Don ($28.80) or the Aburi Salmon Belly with Ikura Don ($23).

Fragrant Garden (馨香园) @ Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre - A Hidden Gem In A Deserted Shopping Mall

FragrantGarden8

Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre used to be my hangout during my primary and secondary school days. This is where I got my computer games in floppy disc and computer repaired. Back then, it was the only shopping mall in the Hougang and Serangoon areas. There were no Nex, Kovan Heartland Mall, Hougang Mall and City Square Mall. The mall remains stuck in time, in its early 80s, rundown and deserted, except for Fragrant Garden (馨香园) on level one that still attracts a regular crowd for its Teochew dishes.

FragrantGarden4
Combo Roll 4/5

Together with a few foodie friends, we dropped by Fragrant Garden on a weekday evening to have dinner. The whole place still looks the same during my secondary school's day. The entire mall is deserted except for the dinner crowd at Fragrant Garden. We started with the Combo Roll ($12/$20) which consists of prawn roll and liver roll. My attention is drawn to the liver roll, which is hardly available in the restaurants' menu nowadays. The offal gives it a creamy interior encased in a crispy exterior wrapped with beancurd skin.

FragrantGarden13
Oyster Omelette Teochew Style 4.2/5

I have tried the oyster omelette from Chui Huay Lim Teochew Restaurant and its the gooey version. Over at Fragrant Garden, the Oyster Omelette Teochew Style ($14/$20) is very close to our local hawker version. It is fried to crispy on the exterior, retaining a slight gooeyness inside with plump and juicy oysters.

FragrantGarden6
Steamed Pomfret in Teochew Style 4.5/5

Steamed Pomfret in Teochew Style (Seasonal Price) is a staple Teochew dish which does not come cheap. A size like this would probably cost around $95. You would perhaps like to confirm the price right at the beginning just to avoid any unhappiness during payment. Steamed to perfection, the pomfret was moist and complemented by the sourish gravy.

FragrantGarden9
Braised Duck in Teochew Style 4.2/5

Another dish I enjoyed a lot in the Braised Duck in Teochew Style ($15/$20). I like the layer of fat under the skin, giving it a delightful ratio to the tender meat. Hidden underneath the pile of sliced braised duck, is a bed of silky Pu Ning Tofu.

FragrantGarden16
Fragrant's Stuffed Sea Cucumber 4/5

If you are a fan of sea cucumber, you will appreciate the Fragrant's Stuffed Sea Cucumber ($60 onwards). The sea cucumber is well braised to a soft and bouncy texture. The stuffed meat mixture elevates the main ingredient, giving it a multi-textural enjoyment. Pre-order is required for this dish.

FragrantGarden17
Braised Vegetable with Scallop in Teochew Style 4.5/5

For the vegetable dish, we went for the Braised Vegetable with Scallop in Teochew Style ($12). I am a sucker for cabbage, especially when it is braised under "nua nua" (very soft), absorbing the flavoursome broth.

FragrantGarden19
Fried Kway Tiao with Chai Poh 4/5

Another staple Teochew dish is the Fried Kway Tiao with Chai Poh ($5/$8/$12). Another well-executed dish packed with smokiness. I only wish there are more dice vegetables for that crunchy bite in each mouthful of the fragrant noodle.

FragrantGarden23
Yam Paste 4/5

Of course, how can we not end our dinner with the traditional Yam Paste ($4/$20/$30)? The version at Fragrant Garden comes with gingko nuts, pumpkin and shallot. Decently good but not the best I have tried.

Fragrant Garden prides itself for offering authentic and cheap Teochew cuisine. It is true to a certain extent as most of the dishes are reasonably priced. However, they are also expensive items such as the sea cucumber, steamed pomfret, cold crab etc. Hence you need to know what to order and not influenced by the pushy service staffs that will try to recommend you the expensive dishes. I have come across reviews about their lousy service but putting that aside, the food here is delicious.

Ginger @ PARKROYAL On Beach Road - The Wonders Of Pincers

Ginger29

From now till 31 October 2018, Ginger at PARKROYAL on Beach Road will be running their The Wonders of Pincers, featuring a spread of crustacean dishes. Alongside their signature Black Pepper, Chilli Crabs and Pumpkin Lobster, you will be delighted to know that our all time favourite Salted Egg Yolk Crab has joined the family too!

Ginger5
Salted Egg Yolk

The Salted Egg Yolk certainly didn't disappoint with its finger-licking good coating, livened with spices and curry leaves. The salted egg yolk forms a layer of thin batter around the crab, hence there is a lot more texture and flavor to it, rather than being just a runny gravy that drips off the meat.

Ginger6
Chilli Crab

Park under the same hot food station is the Chilli Crab. The gravy was quite on point, unlike some buffets which tend to make it sweeter for the international palate. There is even a bowl of crushed peanuts at the side for those who like the nutty fragrance to be in it.

Ginger23
Crab Bee Hoon

But my personal favourite is this Crab Bee Hoon. Somewhat overshadowed by the rest, this Crab Bee Hoon surprised me with its 'cze char' taste. By that I meant the wok hei flavor the bee hoon inhibits, which seemingly comes from the gravy. Like a plate of well done white bee hoon, the gravy carries a myriad of flavours that I believe a part of it comes from the succulent crabs embedded within.

Ginger20
Rock Salt Crab

From the Barbecue Live Station, you will find the newly created Rock Salt Crab. Ideally, get the pincer parts as I find others a tad dry.

Ginger16
Pumpkin Lobster

One advice. Do order this Pumpkin Lobster right as the start if you are here early. Other than the fact that it is lobster, the credit also goes to the beautiful golden pumpkin puree. Infused with locally sourced herbs, the puree first hit my taste buds with sweetness and seconds later the flavors of the herbs spread slowly in my mouth.

Ginger35
Oyster Omelette

Dishes are on rotational basis. That evening, I got to try their Oyster Omelette. Do take it first before it runs out which was what happened to me!

Ginger33
Braised Pork Ribs and Beancurd

Other local dishes include their porridge station and I highly recommend their Braised Pork Ribs and Beancurd. Having just came back from Taipei, the smell coming from the pots and the taste of that tender ribs, beancurb and egg, triggered all the fond memories.

Ginger3
Roasted Meats

Not just seafood, a selection of roasted meats is available as well to complete your feast.

Ginger10

Desserts include pastries and Nonya Kueh. Do try their special coconut cake, which consist of sliced coconut sandwiched in between.

Ginger36

I feel The Wonders of Pincers has done justice to the crabs. Although it is a buffet, the dishes taste freshly out from the woks.

Pricing for The Wonders of Pincers
Mon to Sun: Dinner 6pm to 10pm
SGD68 per adult
SGD34 per child

Sat and Sun: Lunch 12pm to 230pm

Ghim Guan Fried Oyster @ Circuit Road Food Centre - Messy But Crispy Plate of Goodness

GhimGuanFriedOyster2

With the opening of the Downtime Line 3, we can now easily visit Circuit Road Food Centre which is just around 5 minutes walk from Mattar MRT station. One of the many stalls I visited was Ghim Guan Fried Oyster. The stall only operates in the evening, selling fried oyster, oyster omelette and fried carrot cake.

GhimGuanFriedOyster11
Fried Oyster 3.8/5

Run by an old couple probably in their late 50s to 60s, the uncle does the cooking while the auntie is responsible for taking the orders. Placed your order and inform the auntie your table number, and the food will be served to you.

GhimGuanFriedOyster5

The fried oyster here is priced from $4 to $10. I order the $6 portion. The version here is the very crispy type. When you bite into the fried batter, you can hear the biscuity sound ringing in your ears. Because it is fried until so crispy, you also don't get that greasiness on the palate.

GhimGuanFriedOyster13

A good plate of fried oyster or orh luak requires a good chilli sauce to go with it. It has to be spicy and tangy to provide that punch and zestiness to the whole enjoyment of the fried goodness. While it meets the requirement but I think it can be more piquant.

IMG_1896

I personally am not a big fan of the crispy type fried oyster but I am sure there are fans who will enjoy it. However I must admit this is probably the most crispy fried oyster I have ever eaten. Do note that the stall only opens in the evening.

Edge32
Traditional Roti Bakar with Hot Spring Egg 4.2/5

I was delighted to find our beloved breakfast selections among the buffet spread. One of them is the Traditional Roti Bakar with Hot Spring Egg. Crispy toasts with sweet kaya spread, plus soft boiled egg, this indeed is something that is close to our heart. You can even order a cup of Teh Tarik to complete your breakfast set.

Edge10
Chwee Kueh, Soon Kueh, Peng Kueh 3/5

You can also find traditional Teochew classic such as Chwee Kueh, Soon Kueh and Peng Kueh. It brings back memories of the time I would have breakfast in the hawker centre with my grandparent. While I did not quite enjoyed the chwee kueh, the soon kueh and peng kueh are actually pretty decent considering this is a buffet.

Edge22
Fried Carrot Cake 4/5

Edge24
Fried Oyster 3.5/5

Talking about hawker centre, you can also find Fried Carrot Cake and Fried Oyster at one of the live stations. These are classic hawker dishes that you will find in almost hawker centres. This is definitely a buffet that that showcases a lot of the local food.

Edge40
Bak Kut Teh 3.8/5

For those that enjoys a good of Bak Kut Teh, the version at Edge is an in between of the peppery and klang style. It is sweet and without the overpowering herbal taste with a tad of pepper.

Edge42
 Kueh Pai Tee 3/5

Edge45
Mee Siam, Nonya Chicken Curry, Achar, Chap Chye 4/5

A highlight at the refreshed Makan Makan lunch buffet is the "Little Nonya" spread by resident Nonya chef Nancy Teo. I started with some Kueh Pai Tee which whetted up the appetite. Many other delectable selections include Babi Assam, Mee Siam Goreng, Nonya Chicken Curry, Achar, Chap Chye etc, showcasing the Malayan Straits cuisine.

Edge15
Rickshaw Noodle 4/5

Edge16
KL Tai Lok Mee 4.2/5

From the noodle station, we can savour dishes such as Rickshaw Noodle and KL Tai Lok Mee prepared a la minute by the chef at the live station. You will need to try these noodle dishes as they are not readily available elsewhere in Singapore.

Edge4
Curry Fish Head 4.5/5

One of my favourite item is the Curry Fish Head. I am actually quite surprised to find it among the spread. I could not help going over to the Mamak Stall section to grab some naan and prata to soak up the delicious curry gravy.

Edge49

Lastly do save some stomach space for the dessert. There are a variety of local treats such as Gula Melaka Sago Mousse, Chendol Panna Cotta, Ice Kachang, Durian Pengat, Durian Puff and a selection of local kuehs. There are even hot local desserts such as Bubur Cha Cha and Pulat Hitam. The dessert selection section is basically a feast by itself.
