The Canopy Cafe @ Marina Bay Golf Course - Chao Ta Bee Hoon, Hokkien Mee, Penang Fried Kway Teow At A Golf Course?

CanopyCafe18

I would never think I would discover The Canopy Cafe at Marina Bay Gold Course as I don't play golf; hence it is not a place I would ever visit. If not for my friends The Ranting Panda, I would not have known of the hidden gem that offers a delicious selection of local zichar dishes.

CanopyCafe-1

CanopyCafe-2

The Canopy Cafe located on the second floor is an alfresco cafe with the dining area having a stunning view of the CBD landscape and the golf course.

CanopyCafe17
Johore Fried Bee Hoon 3.8/5

The Canopy has an eclectic menu ranging from Western, Japanese, Snacks and Local dishes. The highlight is their local dishes. Who on earth would imagine you can get a plate of Johore Fried Bee Hoon ($9) or better known to many as "Chao Ta Bee Hoon" in a cafe at Marina Bay Golf Course. Though you could not get that crisp compare to JB Ah Beng, the flavours and smokiness are there.

CanopyCafe5
Penang Fried Kway Teow 4/5

The Penang Fried Kway Teow ($9) fares much better than the Johore Fried Bee Hoon with its wok hei aroma. You can also find prawns, fish cake, egg and beansprouts in the plate of rice noodles. I felt that the generous egg serving further enhanced the flavour.

CanopyCafe3
Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee 4/5

My favourite is the Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee ($9). It serves the wet version with the noodles soaking up the robust prawny stock. My only slight disappointment is the accompanying chilli sauce. I find that it does not go well with the noodle.

CanopyCafe8
Tahu Goreng with Special Sauce 4.2/5

A surprise for me is their Tahu Goreng with Special Sauce ($8.90). Unlike the usual sweet sauce with a lot of peanuts, the deep-fried tofu comes in a pool of red chilli, beansprouts and cucumber. Don't be scare by the sea of red; it is not very spicy. It is kind of sweet, a bit like Thai chilli sauce but it still has the sambal fragrant.

CanopyCafe10
Prawn Paste Fried Chicken Wings 3.5/5

While the Prawn Paste Fried Chicken Wings ($9.90) comes in a crispy batter coat, it lacked the prawn paste flavour. Putting that aside, it is an enjoyment deep-fried chicken wing, crisp and juicy.

In my wildest imagination, I would never expect a cafe at a golf course can dish out such delicious local dishes. It is not easily accessible by public transport but for those that drives, you may like to visit the place as it has a lot of parking with a beautiful dining view. By the way, do not mistake Canopy Cafe with the ones at Bishan Park and Hort Park.

Makko Teck Neo @ Telok Blangah Rise - Hidden Peranakan Gem In A Quiet Neighbourhood

MakkoTeckNeo10

Not known to many, hidden in the quiet neighbourhood of Telok Blangah Rise is Makko Teck Neo, a Nyonya restaurant specialising in traditional Peranakan cuisines and kueh kuehs. It all started with Auntie Teck Neo baking and selling its signature pineapple tarts and cookies every Chinese New Year to relatives and friends. As the business grew, Auntie Teck Neo moved into the current restaurant in 2008 and started Makko Tech Neo.

MakkoTeckNeo9
Nyonya Kueh Pie Tee 4/5

MakkoTeckNeo1
Ngoh Hiang 4.5/5

Our lunch started with some light bites. We have the Nyonya Kueh Pie Tee ($9.90) and Ngoh Hiang ($11.90). The Nyonya Kueh Pie Tee filled with flavourful turnip stew, topped with a thinly sliced prawn is must enjoy with a dollop of the chilli sauce. The Ngoh Hiang ($11.90) is quite unique with the addition of chives and carrot for a delightful crunch on top of deep-fried crispy beancurd skin. I am not sure whether this is authentic Nyonya ngoh hiang recipe, but it sure is good.

MakkoTeckNeo8
Tauhu Goreng 4/5

Next, we had is the Tauhu Goreng ($6.80). The deep-fried tofu is piled with shredded cucumber, beansprout and lots of the nutty peanut sauce. Each mouthful comes with an abundance of textures at play.

MakkoTeckNeo4
Rempah Ayam Goreng 4.2/5

MakkoTeckNeo3
Chap Chye 4/5

For a chance, we decided not to order the Ayam Buah Keluah but gone for the Rempah Ayam Goreng ($11.90) instead. The tender grilled chicken thigh has a beautiful rempah rub that elevated the taste profile. Not to forget the chilli sauce for that shiok finishing.

MakkoTeckNeo6
Pork Rib Pongteh 3.8/5

MakkoTeckNeo12
Beef Rendang 4.2/5

For the daily special on Sunday, we went for the Pork Rib Pongteh ($12.90) and Beef Rendang ($14.90). The Pork Rib Pongeh while cooked to tender and infused with the robust fermented beancurd flavour, it lacked finishing tang which I was seeking. The Beef Rendang, on the other hand, left an impression with the lunch group. It is fork-tender and spicy, packing a punch. Best to order a plate of plain basmati rice to go with the shiok gravy.

MakkoTeckNeo7
Dry Mee Siam 4.2/5

A house special at Makko Teck Neo is the Dry Mee Siam ($5.80). It comes with big puffy tau pok that is soaked with the mee siam gravy. While it is dry mee siam, it is not dry at all. It comes with a scoop of rich, sweet and tangy gravy. Best to give it a good toss to coat each strand of the vermicelli, to enjoy the slurping goodness. I personally crave for more of the mee siam gravy.

Makko Teck Neo is definitely a hidden gem located in a sleepy old neighbourhood. I am great to discover yet another good Nyonya restaurant, especially that it is near my place.

The Clifford Pier @ The Fullerton Bay Hotel - Chef Philip Chia X The Clifford Pier "Best Of Perankan Cuisine" Promotion

CliffordPier2

For the third time, Guest Chef Philip Chia will be taking over the kitchen of The Clifford Pier at The Fullerton Bay Hotel. As a fourth-generation Chinese Peranakan, he continues to draw inspirations from recipes of generations to deliver the classic flavours, while imbuing them with a modern flair.

CliffordPier6
Trilogy of Appetisers 3.5/5

First time ever, Chef Philip designed a savoury Trilogy of Appetisers to be featured in the 4-Course Set Dinner. Presenting three ala carte dishes almost like a degustation manner, the highlight for me is Chef's rendition of the Pong Tahu Goreng. The deep-frying process brings out the taste of the beancurd even more, and the pork acts as a backdrop to provide the savoury sweetness. The Grilled Spicy Laksa Prawns will definitely whet your appetite with its aromatics and spices, which is further boosted by the tangy and spicy side salad of wingbean, cucumber, pineapple, calamansi and torch ginger. Whereas for the Kurobuta Pork and Crabmeat Nonya Ngoh Hiang, the accompanying garlicky sweet sauce was a tad too sweet for me.

CliffordPier9
Peranakan Hee Peow Soup 3/5

The Peranakan Hee Peow Soup ($26) is loaded with 3 types of housemade meatballs - prawn, fish and pork, and they were pleasingly light and juicy. The fish maw was pretty luscious too, but I find the soup itself slightly blend and saltish.

CliffordPier18
Ayam Buah Keluak 3.5/5

Ayam Buah Keluak ($40) is an interesting take on the classic. Although the overall taste doesn't quite reflect the traditional profile of the dish, I love the presentation, with the sous-vide Sakura chicken roulade mirroring the shapes of the Buah Keluak. Those enigmatic black nuts become even more alluring, and to be able to taste it on its own is such a treat.

CliffordPier16
Satay Babi Goreng 3.5/5

Satay Babi Goreng ($39) veers towards the rich side, hence the bowl of rice is there for you to enjoy the gravy. The pork belly was even more tender than expected, but a handful less salt would have made the flavours of the dish more balanced.

CliffordPier22
Ikan Chuan Chuan 4.2/5

Ikan Chuan Chuan ($52) allows you to enjoy the beautiful meat of the fresh whole snapper without the fuss of deboning the fish. Cubed and deep-fried, each fish nugget is very lightly battered, with the meat staying firm and moist. The tangy-sweet dressing has a very good consistency that simply glazed the surface of the battered fish cubes, flavouring them without weighing them down.

CliffordPier12
Udang Masak Pedas Nanas 3.8/5

Udang Masak Pedas Nanas ($42) features a lovely light, spiced Malaccan-style coconut gravy, zesty with pineapples cubes and slices of grilled pineapples which I adore. The whole fresh prawns were somehow slightly overdone, but overall it was a very pleasing dish.

CliffordPier23
Snow Ko Swee 4.2/5

Chef Chia’s efforts in representing all-time Peranakan delicacies with his Snow Ko Swee is much lauded. Every element on this plated dessert was delicious, be it the Kueh Ko Swee in two variations (one prepared with gula melaka, and the other with white sugar), the mellow sweet coconut ice cream, the freshly grated coconut, the airy sponge or even the cream dollops. You just got to make space for this dessert.

Rumah Sayang @ JEM

IMG_3141ed

When I was told that there is a popular Peranakan cafe at the basement of JEM, I was a bit puzzled because I didn't release I have seen one during my previous visits. Fortunately a food trail lead me to Rumah Sayang, a Peranakan theme cafe solving the mystery. No wonder I have missed it because the name of the Halal restaurant did not suggest that it is a Peranakan cafe. Moreover the cafe sells a mixed of Nasi Padang, local cooked dishes, local snacks and kuehs on top of some signature Nyonya dishes. Nevertheless, the cafe is extremely popular with the shoppers. It is one of the busiest eatery at the shopping mall constantly streaming in with diners.

IMG_3143ed
Tahu Goreng 4/5

Upon being seated, we started with a plate of Tahu Goreng ($3.50). Crispy on the outside and smooth inside, the texture enjoyed to the fullest with the delectable sweet and spicy nutty sauce.

IMG_3146ed
Curry Fish Head 4.5/5

A must order at Rumah Sayang is their Curry Fish Head ($18.90). The fresh fish head is accompanied with a delicious curry gravy that is rich and creamy while the spice level could be accepted by majority. I like that it is also served with a lot of vegetables so my meal would not be very boring with just one choice. The only disappointment is that the claypot comes with only half a fish head instead of whole.

IMG_3150ed
Salted Egg Yolk Chicken 4.2/5

To have a more complete meal, you may want to throw in another local favourite Salted Egg Yolk Chicken. I am a big fan of salted egg yolk so this is a winner for me. The chicken was tender and juicy complemented  by the salted egg yolk sauce. The flavour of salted egg yolk sauce was enhanced further with the curry leaves aroma and a hint spiciness.

IMG_3151ed
Prawn Fritter 4.5/5

You can also dropped by Rumah Sayang to have either your breakfast and tea if you are not looking for a full meal. They also have local delights like mee siam, mee rebus, mee soto, lakaa, prata, lotong and nyonya kuehs on their menu. Among them my favourite is the Prawn Fritter ($1.60 for 2pc). Hardly get to find this delicious prawny snack elsewhere. Deep fried to golden brown, crispy and not too oily. This is must eaten with the homemade chilli dip.
