Syohachi Wagyu Hamburg @ One Raffles Place Shopping Mall - Premium Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef Hamburgs At Affordable Prices

SyohachiWagyuHamburg11

Farm-to-table restaurant Syohachi Wagyu Hamburg at One Raffles Place Shopping Mall offers hamburgs made from premium cuts of A5 wagyu fresh from Japan. Under the same brand which runs Hong Kong’s well-known speciality yakiniku joint, Syohachi Yakiniku, Syohachi Wagyu Hamburg prides itself in its farm-to-table concept. This is made possible as they own an exclusive partnership with Japan’s award-winning Hidakami Ranch in the Japanese prefecture of Miyagi-ken, allowing them access to exquisite cuts of Japanese A5 Wagyu beef.

Other than Syohachi Wagyu Hamburg, buttery Japanese thick toasts can also be found on their menu. To ensure the freshness of every dish served and to keep up with the lunch crowd, Syohachi Wagyu Hamburg’s offerings vary from breakfast to lunch to dinner. The Breakfast Menu runs from morning till 11.30am, while Lunch Menu is between 11.30am to 2.30pm, followed by an Afternoon Tea & Dinner Menu starting from 2.30pm onwards to closing. So be sure to catch the right timing to avoid disappointment. And also, each set meal comes with a free-flow salad buffet which unfortunately has to be revised to portioned salads due to the Covid-19 situation. Once the situation allows for it, Syohachi Wagyu Hamburg will implement its free-flow salad buffet.

Japanese A5 Wagyu Hamburg Steak Set 3.8/5

The signature Japanese A5 Wagyu Hamburg Steak Set ($16.50), available from 11.30am onward, comes with fresh mixed green salad, seasonal Japanese pickles and Japanese steamed rice with Syohachi’s signature beef gravy. At first glance, the hamburg looked kind of 'naked' compared to the usual hamburgs served in a hot plate with sauces. That said, as a fast-casual concept in the CBD area, it does make sense to make it more fuss-free and takeaway friendly. Prepared upon order, its beefy flavour and juicy texture say a lot about its quality.

Japanese Steamed Rice with Syohachi’s Signature Beef Gravy

But what stood out of this set meal was the humble bowl of Japanese steamed rice with Syohachi’s signature beef gravy served at the side. The gravy had a perfect consistency, keeping the rice plump and pearly with a nice bite to it. I love the onions in it, which had been thoroughly softened and left to impart sweetness into the gravy. There were morsels of mushrooms as well, which added a depth of flavour and a textural bite to the rice.

Wagyu Beef Toastie with Cheddar Cheese and Egg Omelette 4/5

For a less than usual breakfast, afternoon snack or light dinner, try its Syohachi Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef Toastie ($7.70 ala carte/$10.70 set). A cut of A5 wagyu beef patty sandwiched in between two thick buttery slices of white bread. The oomph factor was definitely there when I had it with an extra top-up of a serving of cheddar cheese and egg omelette. All add-ons are priced at $1 per serving. For Japanese Butter Toasties, their sets come with a fresh mixed green salad, seasonal Japanese pickles and crispy tater tots. (Not available for lunch.)

Japanese Egg Omelette and Cheddar Cheese Toastie 3.8/5

Even if you ain't in the mood for meat, its Japanese Egg Omelette and Cheddar Cheese Toastie ($6.50 ala carte/$9.50 set) will leave you just as satisfied. Served hot from the grill, the molten cheese that oozed out whet my appetite instantly. The omelette, however, wasn't as fluffy as expected, and I felt the white slices of bread could be less charred as well to retain some of their softness. (The set is available all day, and Ala Carte is not available during lunch hours.)

SyohachiWagyuHamburg20
Chunky Peanut Butter with Condensed Milk Toastie 3.8/5

Reminiscent of a Hongkong style toast, this Chunky Peanut Butter with Condensed Milk Toastie ($5 ala carte/$8 set) hit all the right spots with its savoury, crunchy peanut butter and creamy condensed milk without being too cloying. I would prefer a softer bread though, to cradle the oozy filling much better. (Not available during lunch hours)

Usher In The Year Of The Earth Dog At Cherry Garden, Mandarin Oriental Singapore

CherryGarden4

For this Lunar New Year, visit Cherry Garden at Mandarin Oriental from 1 February to 2 March 2018 as part of your celebrations to usher in the Year of the Earth Dog. There are 7 CNY set menus to choose from - Success, Joyous, Harmony, Auspicious, Longevity, Prosperity and Wealth, catering to your preferences. Here is a peek at some of the dishes offered.

Each set menu has its own Yu Sheng and they are available for takeaway too. There are 5 different types to bring home and you can even add on side dishes to make it your own. One of these is the 风生水起鱼生 Prosperity Yu Sheng with Salmon and Crispy Fish Skin.

CherryGarden2
Double-boiled Spring Chicken Soup 4/5

Nourish your body for the new year with 松茸干贝炖春鸡汤 Double-boiled Spring Chicken Soup (Joyous menu). Deeply flavoured with simple ingredients - earthy matsutake and umami dried scallops, a genuine taste that is meant to be slowly savoured sip by sip. Not to forget the collagen rich snow fungus for the skin.

CherryGarden8
Steamed Dragon Spot Garoupa Fillet 4/5

菜甫蒸龙虎斑件 Steamed Dragon Spot Garoupa Fillet (Joyous menu) has a homely taste to it. Tender with a slight chewy texture, I enjoyed every bit of the delicate meat. As a finishing touch, the piquant preserved vegetables and earthy mushrooms bring out the sweetness of the fish.

CherryGarden9
Baked Tiger Prawn 3/5

From the ala carte menu, we had a Baked Tiger Prawn with Yunnan Black Garlic and Egg White ($22 per portion). I was half expecting the sauce to be sauteed egg white but instead, the prawn was drenched in a starchy and garlicky gravy. While I really like the sweet and plumy taste of the cloves in the steamed prawn dumpling with black garlic (available in their Dim Sum menu), the black garlic here didn't quite fit in in this dish.

CherryGarden14
Steamed Jasmine Rice with Cantonese Pork Sausage 4.5/5

Never mind if my crispy suckling pig is not available for takeaway. I'm more than happy to bring home one of its 生财聚宝盆 ~ 沙煲腊味饭 Steamed Jasmine Rice with Cantonese Pork Sausage in casserole ($128 for 6 pax), which satisfies me just as much. I was surprised by myself on how much I enjoy and appreciate these lap cheong. Glistening with what's remaining after months of drying and curing, the sausages were plump, juicy with fats and chewy with a bite. Sweet-salty, smokey, intensely flavouring the fluffy jasmine rice, this dish echos a sense of nostalgia and the spirit of a lavish Lunar New Year dish.

CherryGarden16
Organic Black Bean Pudding 3.5/5

Our dessert, in contrast, encompasses the modern's notion of guilt-free dessert - Organic Black Bean Pudding with avocado and sesame ice cream 黑珍珠 (Joyous menu). The black bean taste was actually quite subtle but managed to come through and go really well with the creamy avocado.

Exquisite spring goodies, takeaway dishes and gift hampers at Cherry Garden will be available from 1 February to 2 March 2018. For the ultimate, you can go for Cherry Garden's Luxurious Pen Cai – Singapore's largest traditional basin dish; weighing more than 25 kilogrammes and measuring up to 45 centimetres in diameter. Topped with premium ingredients, the pot symbolises overflowing goodness, featuring four-head abalone, lobsters, scallops, sea cucumbers, prawns, dried oyster rolls, conpoy, dace fillet, roasted duck, lotus chicken, roasted pork belly; Cantonese pork sausages, mushrooms, wolfberries and black moss.

Uncle Kun Delicacies (根叔美食世家) @ Toa Payoh Lorong 4

IMG_1174ed

The foodie friends, Ian and Philip recommended me to Uncle Kun Delicacies (根叔美食世家) at block 74 Toa Payoh Lorong 4 Food Centre one weekend. Arriving at the food centre, the food centre was already buzzing with crowds for breakfast and it was not hard to spot Uncle Kun's stall with the long snaking queue. Uncle Kun used to be the chef at Shang Palace and Mouth Restaurants before opening this stall 8 years ago offering restaurant standard food at food centre/hawker centre.

IMG_1176ed
Lor Mai Gai 3.8/5

Commonly Lor Mai Gai is served in a circular shape but at Uncle Kun Delicacies the Lor Mai Gai is in rectangular shape. The Elongated glutinous rice is sandwiched with generous slices of chicken, mushroom and there is even salted egg yolk. While I enjoyed how the flavours from the different ingredients worked harmoniously together, I thought the glutinous rice was not sticky enough.

IMG_1189ed
Yam Cake 4/5

The Yam Cake has a smoother texture compared with those that I have tried elsewhere. Comes with delight chunks of yam, this is best consumed together with special homemade sweet sauce.

IMG_1183ed
Glutinous Rice 4/5

Wok fried to a very fragrant aroma, the plate of Glutinous Rice topped with peanuts will delight your palate with its grainy bites of enjoyment.

IMG_1181ed
Fried Beehoon 4.2/5

The Fried Beehoon may look ordinary but the fragrant and springy beehoon felt like the morning sun sending sunshine to each patron beaming with warm and lovely flavours.

IMG_1185ed
Siew Mai 4.2/5

In addition to the normal delights at Uncle Kun Delicacies, the stall will also sells some dim sum items on weekend. These freshly made Siew Mai was probably one of the best I ever had. Not only were they huge, the skin was thin and smooth wrapping around the well seasoned meat stuffing. Compared to the price I need to fork out to something smaller and may not be as appetizing, this definitely worth every cents I paid.

IMG_1188ed
Steamed Rice 4.2/5

For those that needs a probably lunch for their grumbling stomach, despair not as Uncle Kun Delicacies also offers steamed rice on their menu. There are 4 choices in Steamed Rice with Spare Ribs & Bean Sauce, Steam Rice with Preserved Vegetable & Pork, Original Three Treasure Rice and Steamed Rice with Chicken, Salted Fish & Chinese Sausage. My favourite was the Steamed Rice with Chicken, Salted Fish & Chinese Sausage. The fragrant pot of rice was further lifted by the chinese sausage and salted fish, bursting with flavours.

IMG_1192ed

This is Uncle Kun in the picture. Age may have caught up with him but definitely not his spirit in dishing out delicious Cantonese fare. Although the official timing of the stall closed at 130pm, it is advisable to go early as most of the items are usually sold out before that.
