One Kueh At A Time @ Pandan Loop - Reopens With An Expanded Menu With Unique Bak Kwa & Haebi Hiam Soon Kueh

OneKuehAtATime1

I had heard of One Kueh At A Time when it first started in Berseh Food Centre. I wanted to check out their handmade soon kueh back then but didn't find the time to do. Out of the blue, it closed its stall, and I was left regretting. After two years of closing its stall, the good news is that it is back in operations and it even relocated to Pandan Loop so much nearer to my home.

OneKuehAtATime9

OneKuehAtATime7

Their new place is hidden inside the Pandan Loop industrial estate. If it is your first time visiting the place, you probably would be doubting yourself whether you are at the right place, surrounded by industrial buildings. Once you walked passed the glass door, it opens to a totally new world.

OneKuehAtATime3

Since moving to the new location, One Kueh At A Time has expanded its variety of Soon Kueh. During my visit, there are eight different varieties on the menu. They have Classic ($1.60), Ku Chai ($2), Carrot ($1.60), Beetroot ($1.80), Sah Nia's Haebi Hiam ($2.50), Bak Kwa ($2.50), Cabbage ($1.80) and Smoked Chicken ($3).

OneKuehAtATime11

We ordered the Classic, Smoked Chicken, Haebi Hiam and Ku Chai to try. Different from the other soon kueh is the thin translucent skin with a delightfully chewy texture. As for the fillings, they are substantial and stir-fried to fragrant. The haebi hiam and smoked chicken soon kueh are really unique. I didn't expect them to complement the shredded jicama so well. It gives the traditional snack a new interpretation.

OneKuehAtATime14

One Kueh At A Time has probably found the right formula to introduce something new but not divert from the traditional soon kueh. With both classic and contemporary creations, the traditional snack now caters for both the old and young generations.

Churreria La Lola @ The Central Clarke Quay - Popular Churro Brand In Philippines Opened In Singapore

LaLola6

Popular Spanish cafe from Philippines - Churreria La Lola serving the authentic Spanish churros has opened its first overseas outlet in Singapore at The Central, Clarke Quay. The fried dough pastry is made from scratch in house and freshly fried in 100% olive oil upon order.

LaLola4

The Clasico Churros are crispy and moreish with 5 choices of dip. There 5 different flavours are signature, chocolate, matcha, yam and cream cheese. My favourite is still the chocolate dip which is rich and complement the churro. I also applauded the cone shape packaging which is a brilliant idea to serve the churro and holding the dip.

LaLola14

Besides the original style churro, La Lola also offers churros glazed in Dark Chocolate, White Chocolate, Matcha and Purple Yam flavours.

LaLola11

Specially created for the local palate is the savoury Pork Floss Xuxo Churro which is filled with garlic aioli and topped with pork floss. It is an interesting creation. However my love goes to the Xuxo Nutella, you just can't get enough of the crispy and soft churro stuffed with rich chocolatey nutella.

LaLola1

Having been to Spain and tasted the best, I would say La Lola's clasico churro with chocolate dip is comparable. The glazed flavoured churros I would probably give it a miss though, I probably the original taste. The Xuxo churros are unique if you are looking for something different from the traditional.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Kueh Garden (福粿园) @ Jurong East - The Ang Ku Kueh Is As Good As Ji Xiang Confectionery At Everton Park

KuehGarden5

The traditional Ang Ku Kueh or loosely translated as red tortoise cake is an oval shape Chinese pastry made of red soft sticky glutinous rice flour skin wrapped around peanut or green bean filling in the centre. Nowadays the traditional Ang Ku Kueh does not only come in red color but a variety of fillings too. One of such confectionery that has kept up with time with their colourful Ang Ku Kueh is Kueh Garden (福粿园) at Jurong East.

KuehGarden9

Besides the original Ang Ku Kueh filled with peanut and green bean, Kueh Garden offers a colourful variety such as Red Bean, Sweet Corn, Sweet Potato, Coconut, Coffee, Green Tea, Yam, Durian, Salted Bean and Milo. They range between 90 cents to a dollar each piece.

KuehGarden7

Besides the vibrant colours of the Ang Ku Kueh and its interesting filling especially durian and milo, catering to the modern tastebuds and younger generation. The highlight of the Ang Ku Kueh is their mochi-like texture. It is so soft and chewy. The texture is comparable to the renowned Ji Xiang Confectionery's Ang Ku Kueh at Everton Park.

KuehGarden6

Besides the different Ang Ku Kueh, Kueh Garden sells a variety of traditional kueh such as Soon Kueh, Ku Cai Kueh, Png Kueh, Ondeh Ondeh, 9-Layer Kueh and more. More interesting is the Kueh Platter that is suitable for gathering and celebration. You can even order them online.

Jit It Thai San Popiah (日益太山薄饼) @ Clementi Avenue 3 - Garlicky and Spicy Shiokness Popiah

IMG_3969ed

It has been a long while since I lasted visited one of my favourite Popiah stall, Jit It Thai San Popiah (日益太山薄饼) at Clementi. It is good to know that the old auntie is still in the pink of health, running the stall and busy rolling her popiah to serve the long snaking queue.

IMG_3624ed
Popiah 4/5

What I like about the Popiah ($1.50/pc) here is the shiok garlicky taste and its kick ass chilli, that is wrapped in a thin popiah skin. I am glad that the standard is there. To be frank, the stall auntie is already quite old. I really wonder how long can she continue doing this day in day out.

IMG_3625ed
Popiah 4/5

The delectable popiah here is stuffed with turnips, beansprouts, hard boiled eggs and peanuts. While the turnips may lack the depth and richness, it is made up by the garlick and chilli shiokness with the fragrant egg and peanuts rounding off the flavours.

IMG_3629ed

Do let me remind you again to keep your order simple. The auntie can be quite grouchy at times if you are not clear with your order. We can't blame her as age has also caught up with her. So do pardon her temper.

Nyonya Curry Puff Cafe @ Bukit Batok East Ave 2 - One Of The BestChicken Curry Puff I Have Eaten

IMG_0373ed

My curiosity brought me to the neighbourhood of Bukit Batok East Ave 2 after a reader dropped me a message informing of a very good curry puff place there. Nyonya Curry Puff Cafe is not actually a sit down cafe, it is more of a takeaway kiosk selling a variety of puffs, snacks and light bites.

IMG_7631ed
Chicken Curry Puff 4.2/5

The deep fried Chicken Curry Puff ($1.30/pc) comes with a crispy and flaky pastry skin. A bite into it, my eyes brighten up. The inside of the puff comes with chicken, potato, egg stuffing perfumed by the spices which you can taste in Indian curry. I really enjoyed this.

Ku Cai Mushroom Puff 4.2/5

For vegetarian, there is the Ku Cai Mushroom Puff. This is something new, I have never heard or seen it elsewhere. I am a fan of ku cai and with the additional of mushroom and onion, the flavour is given a further lift. I like the creation. Even non vegetarian should give it a try.

IMG_7634ed

Besides the two puffs that I tried. the cafe offers a wide varieties of creation. They also sells Sardine Puff, Lemon Tuna Puff, Mutton Curry Puff, Black Pepper Puff, Chicken Cheese Puff and Durian Puff. Some interesting item such as lemon tuna, chicken cheese and durian caught my attention. I already planning to come back and try them.

Yong Xiang Carrot Cake @ Bendemeer Food Centre - Have You Tried Fried Png Kueh That Is Served Like Fried Carrot Cake?

IMG_7047ed

It seems like this is one of the best hidden secrets in the hawker scene. It is common to see fried white or black carrot cake but have you heard of Yong Xiang Carrot Cake at Bendemeer Food Centre who does your Teochew Png Kueh, Soon Kueh and Ku Chai Kueh the fried carrot cake style. Unique isn't it?

IMG_7034ed
Fried White Carrot Cake 4/5

IMG_7036ed
Fried White Carrot Cake 4/5

The stall does both the black and white carrot cake. While I was in the queue, I noticed all the patrons in front of me ordered the White Carrot Cake ($3), so I changed my mind and followed the crowd. The stall does quite a good plate of fried carrot cake with a generous amount of egg fried to aromatic crispiness.

IMG_7044ed
Fried Png Kueh and Soon Kueh 4/5

The main reason why I am here is for the Fried Png Kueh. It was only heard said until I see it for myself while in the queue. Not only Png Kueh, the stall also sells Soon Kueh and Ku Chai Kueh. Once you tell the stall uncle what you want, the auntie behind the frying with pan fried the kuehs to an exterior crispiness before adding eggs onto the chopped kuehs. This is my first time having Fried Png Kueh and Soon Kueh ($3.50) in fried carrot cake style and I really like the extra layer of crispiness with a coating of fragrant egg on top of the kueh.

IMG_9820ed

I have opted for my fried png kueh and soon kueh to be without the black sauce. I understand you can also asked for the black sauce, if you like it to sweeter, like you black carrot cake. I am glad my curiosity brought me to Bendemeer Food Centre to unearth this rare find.

Brothers Rojak @ Clementi Avenue 3 - Best Rojak in the West

IMG_3619ed

I have frequent Brothers Rojak at Clementi Avenue 3 on several occasions but I always order takeaway. I finally get the chance to eat in at the coffeeshop with my foodie friends on a weekend. I was eager and proud to introduce to my friends my favourite Rojak stall in Singapore.

IMG_3617ed
Rojak 4.5/5

Usually when I take away, the sauce is packed separately. I just pour the sauce and mixed the ingredients myself. Resulting in a pool of gravy at the end. Having the opportunity to eat in, I realized how skillful the uncle is, in getting all the various ingredients to be evenly coated with the savoury shrimp paste sauce. Topped with roasted peanuts and some finely cut bunga kantan (pink ginger bud) to round off the sweet, tangy and nutty enjoyment.

IMG_3618ed
Rojak 4.5/5

The Rojak priced from $3 to $8 comes with a variety of ingredients such as tau pok, youtiao, cucumber, pineapple and jicama. The tau pok and youtiao were given a quick toast for crisp. For a little extra cost, one can add on additional items such as tau pok, youtiao, cuttlefish and century egg.

IMG_6682

During my recent visit, I noticed that the stall uncle seems to have aged quite a bit. I wonder how long can he continue doing this. He basically stands the whole day, mixing and tossing the ingredients in a bowl. I doubt he has the chance to have a rest at all. In all my visits, there is always a queue and it never seems to stop. I really hope the stall uncle will stay healthy and strong for many more years to come.

Hvala Waffle Bar @ 313 Somerset

IMG_2706ed

Hvala Waffle Bar at the basement of 313 Somerset which started with selling waffle stick with different types of topping, has changed its concept offering soft serve, waffle in a cup and cake in a cake.

IMG_2709ed
Premium Soft Serve 4.5/5

When I was told that the Premium Soft Serve ($3.90) at Hvala Waffle Bar is one of the best in town, I was initially skeptical  about it until I tried it my self. The soft serve was thicker and creamy in texture compared to many. Furthermore it comes with real vanilla beans

IMG_2700ed
Cake in a Cup with Toppings 3/5

The new concept at Hvala Waffle Bar is quite simple. First you decide on the base. Either cake or waffle. I decided to try the new creation, Cake in a Cup with Toppings  ($5.90/ 2 toppings, $6.90/ 3 toppings) whereby customers have a choice between the red velvet cake or chocolate truffle cake for the base. Second is to choose the toppings.

IMG_2704ed
Cake in a Cup with Toppings and Soft Serve 3.5/5

Last but not least, customers can also choose to add the soft serve to the cake in a cup. I personally prefer the Cake in a Cup with Soft Serve and Toppings ($7.90). The soft serve provided an additional contrast in texture to the cake base. With the yummilicious soft serve, this lifted the whole enjoyment.
