Ivy's Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup @ Pasir Panjang Food Centre - My Favourite Mutton Soup Stall Has Moved To The West

IMG_9606ed

Fans of Ivy's Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup be rejoiced as Max is back serving the bowl of delicious mutton soup at a new location in Pasir Panjang Food Centre. After more than a year's break, I am glad to know that Max has moved nearer to my home, and I need not travel all the way to his previous stall in Toa Payoh.

Taking the feedback of his customers, Max has introduced claypot for his mutton soup so that the soup will be kept warm throughout the meal.

Ivy's Herbal Mutton Soup with Tendon ($15) comes brimming with ingredients such as mutton, black fungus, tau pok and beancurd skin. The pot of mutton soup is good for about 3-4 pax. Many people may worry about the gaminess but the mutton is tediously prepared every morning, marinating them with fermented beancurd and seared in hot oil to remove the gaminess.

The soup itself has a robust body with hints of bittersweet flavour. The mutton was also cooked to tender soft, which fell off the bone with ease. Not to forget the potent chilli sauce that goes very well with the meat.

Ivy's Hainanese Herbal Mutton Soup is different from most stalls that used a lot of ginger and herbs to masked the gaminess. There is painstaking labour behind each bowl of mutton soup that comes with lots of ingredients. I am glad that the stall has now found a new home in the West. I need not travel all the way to Toa Payoh to have the mutton soup anymore.

Hong Wen Mutton Soup @ Beauty World Food Centre - Old School Teochew Mutton Soup

IMG_8568ed

Located on the fourth floor of Beauty World Centre is this old school Teochew mutton soup stall that seems to have been around for ages. Hong Wen Mutton Soup is founded by stall owner, Mr Tan's father back during the days at the demolished old Seventh Mile market. Mr Tan now runs the stall at Beauty World Food Centre while his brother has another stall in the nearby Bukit Timah Food Centre.

The Mutton Soup ($5) has a sweet herbal flavour with lots of shredded ginger masking the gamey taste of the mutton. However I find the soup too sweet to my liking. The mutton chopped into small pieces fell off the bone with ease. It was very tender and did not have any gamey taste. However I thought the serving was a bit small with only a few miserable pieces of mutton. I can't blame Mr Tan as I understand he used good quality mutton from New Zealand and he needs to watch his cost.

While I did not quite enjoy the bowl of mutton soup from Hong Wen Mutton Soup, I could tell that it has its own loyal supporters throughout the years. During my visit, I noticed a steady stream of customer patronizing the stall.

Kent Thong Turtle Soup (金堂山瑞) @ Smith Street Food Centre (Chinatown Complex) - A Heritage Cuisine

IMG_7090ed

Located at Smith Street Food Centre is a humble little stall managed by an old couple who takes turns to mend the stall. The old couple sells the exotic turtle soup, cooked a la minute upon order. Kent Thong Turtle Soup started in Keong Saik street before moving to its current location around 10 years ago.

Claypot Turtle Soup

Cooked in a concoction of Chinese herbs. the Turtle Soup ($12) is known for its high nutritional value which has health benefits for the kidney and blood circulation. I have tried turtle soup before and I find the version at Kent Tong lighter in both appearance and taste. Understand from their owner their version is Cantonese style. The priced item for every bowl of turtle soup is the rear soft shell of the carapace which is rich with collagen.

Turtle Egg

I have been wanting to try Turtle Egg for the longest time. An owner ever told me that it is very hard to get them. I was rather lucky to finally tried it at Kent Thong. You just need to add $1 for a turtle egg. Crack it into the soup to get a fuller and richer flavour.

Besides the turtle soup, Kent Thong also sells Mutton Soup ($6) and Black Chicken Soup ($5). The comforting Mutton Soup has a subtle sweetness. The mutton is also cooked to a soft texture that literally falls off the bone. Many people do no like mutton because of its gaminess but I could not detect any trace of it here.

The Black Chicken Soup ($5) is the star for me at Kent Tong. The used of rice wine and XO perfumed the bowl of comforting soup as well as elevating the whole enjoyment of the herbal soup.

There are not many stalls left in Singapore that sells turtle soup anymore. Many of us may find the delicacy too exotic. First of all, these are all farmed turtle. If you are afraid of eating the meat, then just drink the soup as they have health benefits for the body.

Bahrakath Mutton Soup King @ Adam Road Food Centre

With the opening of the rest of the stations on the Circle Line, another popular food centre can be conveniently reached now. The new Botanic Gardens MRT station is just walking distance to the Adam Road Food Centre.

Talking about Adam Road Food Centre, the first thing that comes to my mind is Mutton Soup or also known as Kambing Soup. Bahrajath Mutton Soup King has probably one of the best Mutton Soup in town. It was full of rich spicy flavour and not oily. It also came with chunks of tender mutton.

I usually have breads to go with the Mutton Soup. I like to eat the bread after soaking up the delicious broth. If you are adventurous, you can add sheep tongue, ribs or brain to the Mutton Soup.
