Old Airport Road Lor Mee @ Balestier Road - Famous Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee Opens A Sit Down Restaurant

OldAirportLorMeeShopfront-3

The famous Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee hawker stall at Old Airport Food Centre has partnered with Food King's Ryan Tan to open a new sit down restaurant at Balestier Road. There is always a long queue at their hawker stall at Old Airport Food Centre, and it is usually sold out by noon. So you have to be an early bird if you do not want it to be a wasted trip.

OldAirportLorMee9

With the new lor mee restaurant, diners can now savour the bowl of slurping goodness any time of the day. It is open daily from 9am to 9pm. The Lor Mee comes in three sizes for $6, $8 and $10 with choices of flat yellow noodle, round yellow noodle, kway teow or bee hoon.

OldAirportLorMee2

OldAirportLorMee8

The bowl of slurping goodness comes with braised egg, braised pork belly, fish flakes, beansprouts, fresh chillies and parsley, topped with chilli, fresh garlic and vinegar. Give everything a good mix for a good spoonful of flavour and textures.

OldAirportLorMee11

The braised sauce is the star here, making the bowl of lor mee taste so good. It is not too gooey and starchy yet has an excellent flavourful depth. Xin Mei Xiang got it right is the balance. The different flavours from the braising sauce, vinegar, garlic, and chilli come together for one to enjoy the goodness.

Singapore Lor Mee @ Tiong Bahru Food Centre - A New And Third Lor Mee Stall At The Food Centre

SingaporeLorMeeStall-3

A third and new Lor Mee stall - Singapore Lor Mee has opened at Tiong Bahru Food Centre. Accordingly to my friend, the stall is previously known as Zhen Hao Lor Mee at North Bridge Road. I have not heard of them before. Nevertheless, I could not help my curiosity self to check them out.

SingaporeLorMee7

There is three items on the menu - Traditional Lor Mee ($4.80), Fried Cod Fish Lor Mee ($5.80) and Jumbo Lor Mee ($8). Unlike other lor mee stalls, it offers unique items such as fried cod fish fillet and tempura prawn for their lor mee.

SingaporeLorMee3

I decided to go for the Fried Cod Fish Lor Mee. Although the fried cod fish is flaky and moist, the exterior is not as crispy as I would have liked. Probably due to the fact it is not freshly fried.

SingaporeLorMee11

Compared to the other two popular stalls at the food centre, the broth, better known as the lor for the noodle, lacks robustness. While it is not very gooey, it is light and lacks depth. So maybe I am more inclined to a more heavily flavoured bowl of lor mee.

SingaporeLorMee13

I had tried the stall when it was previously at North Bridge Road. From the taste, it seems that it is more for the older plate or what we may label it as traditional taste. The younger generation, which prefers strong flavours, may not yet enjoy it.

Feng Zhen Lor Mee @ Taman Jurong Food Centre - The Same Gold Standard For Best Lor Mee In The West

FengZhenLorMee12

Suppose you ask me where is the best Lor Mee in the West. Feng Zhen Lor Mee at Taman Jurong Food Centre is the top of my list. The last visit to the stall was back in 2016, and I noticed a couple of minor changes. First, the signboard has changed from yellow to purple. Second, it has also replaced the porcelain bowls with plastic bowls.

FengZhenLorMee4
Lor Mee 4.2/5

The bowl of gooey slurping goodness comprises braised pork belly, braised egg, fish cake, ngoh hiang and flaky fish meat. It has not changed since the last visit.

FengZhenLorMee8

What binds everything in the bowl together has to be the delicious gravy. The flavoursome gravy or "lor" is not overly starchy, making it drinkable yet just ideal for coating each strand of noodles. For the fullest enjoyment, I would recommend adding some chilli sauce, garlic, and the soul of any good lor mee, the vinegar into the bowl of noodles, and give them a good toss.

Old Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee @ Tampines Street 43 - Sisters Of Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee Open Own Stall

OldAirportLorMee13

Have you tried the famous Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee at Old Airport Road hawker centre? Recently the sisters of Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee has opened their own stall at Tampines Street 43. The stall name is Old Airport Road Zheng Zong Lor Mee, located at the coffeeshop beside the market. As words get around of their opening after seven months, there is a constant snaking queue for their lor mee now.

OldAirportLorMee8
Lor Mee 4.5/5

I heard that the sisters start the day as early as 130am to start preparing the gravy and ingredients in order to open the stall by 6am. That is a lot of hard work behind a comforting bowl of noodle in a thick and viscous gravy.

OldAirportLorMee4

The Lor Mee ($4/ $5/ $6) comes in three sizes. We have the largest portion loaded with shredded batang fish, braised pork, braised egg, beansprouts and parsley. The serving is very generous. Not forgetting the garlic and vinegar, which is the soul of a good bowl of lor mee. You can also add a dollop of chilli sauce and some chopped chilli to spice up the enjoyment.

OldAirportLorMee15

I have not tried Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee, but accordingly, to my friends, the gravy is lighter in flavour in comparison. For a first-timer like me, I find it acceptable and well balanced. It definitely makes the spot as one of the top lor mee stalls in Singapore.

OldAirportLorMee11

Apparently, the stall also sells prawn noodle. I didn't try it, but if you do, do let me know whether it is good?

Old Bukit Purmei Lor Mee @ Queen Street (Bugis) - The Return Of The Legendary Bukit Purmei Lor Mee

OldBukitPurmeiLorMee5

Fans of Bukit Purmei Lor Mee will be glad to know that it has made another come back. Having followed them from Bukit Purmei to West Coast Drive, the joy was shortfall when uncle Teo falls sick again, and they have to close the stall. This time the stall is run by the third generation, uncle Teo's nephew. With the news of Old Bukit Purmei Lor Mee opening, the stall has been gathering long queues every day. During my visit, I queued for around an hour.

OldBukitPurmeiLorMee2
Lor Mee 4.2/5

The Lor Mee comes in 3 sizes - $3.50, $4 and $5. The $5 portion comes with fried fish, but the stall did not have it during my visit. The stall owner told me that they are short of staffing and cannot cope with the overwhelming crowd..

OldBukitPurmeiLorMee9

As the stall does not have fried fish, we ordered the $4 portion, which comes with slices of pork, fish cake, char siew and fried ngoh hiang balls in a thick and flavoursome braising sauce. I looked back at my old photo album of bukit purmei lor mee, and I realized it used to have more ingredients such as ngoh hiang and fried crispy bits. It also feels a bit weird to have char siew for lor mee.

OldBukitPurmeiLorMee11

OldBukitPurmeiLorMee12

In my view, the bowl of lor mee is good but fall short of the standard we used to know. I also don't quite understand the ngoh hiang ball, which is very hard and lacked the five spice flavour. I prefer the stall to bring back the standard accompanying ingredients that Uncle Teo used to serve in his bowl of lor mee.

Putien @ Great World - The Return of the International Putien Eel Festival

Putien9

For the second year running, Putien brings back its International Eel Festival to all its 14 Putien restaurants in Singapore, including the newest outlet at Great World. The festival runs from 1 August till 31 October 2020, the harvesting season which yields the juiciest eels sourced from Shunde, Guangdong – the “Hometown of Eels in China”. Featured this year are three classic eel dishes, with 2 new additions this year.

Putien6
Baked Eel Dressed in Garlic & Puning Bean Sauce 3.8/5

One of the new creations is Baked Eel Dressed in Garlic & Puning Bean Sauce ($39.90). The eel was lightly coated with fermented bean paste sauce, and the taste of its savoury and sweetened fats and plump meat was similar to that of eels prepared with Japanese tare sauce. The skin of the eel crisped up a little in the heat, which made every bite of the plump eel even more delectable. The shallots and garlic cloves, after inheriting all the goodness from the sauce and fats from the eel, became little gems of flavours not to be wasted as mere garnishes.

Putien12
Eel Cooked in Natural Spring Water 4.5/5

One of the classics which I feel is a must-try is The Eel Cooked in Natural Spring Water ($39.90). The eel is first seasoned simply with ginger, goji berries and salt, and then prepared right upon serving. After placing the sliced eel, goji berries and ginger into a special ceramic pot, in goes natural spring water, then left to simmer for 10 minutes. I was really surprised by the soup. There weren't much ingredients or condiments that went into the spring water, but the eel itself had provided much depth of flavour and body to the resulting soup.

Putien2
Starter Platter 3.5/5

Putien serves up interesting cold starters too. An excellent option to go for is the Starters Platter ($18.90), which allows you to try all four well-known small dishes - Cold Pork Trotters Jelly, Braised Homemade Beancurd, Seaweed and Mini Shrimps with sauce and Braised Pig Intestine. My favourite is the Seaweed and Mini Shrimps with sauce, not just for its taste, but for its nutrition as well! I learnt that this is made using the first batch of fully grown seaweed harvested every year within 30 days after cultivation, which has the best texture and nutrition of the seaweed.

Putien18
Sweet & Sour Pork with Lychees 4/5

One of the most known dishes from Putien is this Sweet & Sour Pork with Lychees (from $14.90). I have had it a few times before and this time round I thought it tasted even better with juicier meats.

Putien14
Braised Luffa with Convoy 4/5

I enjoyed this Braised Luffa with Convoy ($13.90) a lot. It was very lightly seasoned, which allowed its delicate flavours and sweetness to come through. It's a very homely dish that one can go back to again and again.

Putien22
Lor Mee 4/5

PUTIEN Fujian Lor Mee (from $10.90) is one of the staples among the regulars. Braised in pork broth, the Putien noodles had a nice bite to it, and I appreciate how the accompanying ingredients such as the pork belly, prawn and clam add to the texture of the dish.

Putien24
Lotus Seed with White Fungus Soup 3.5/5

Ending our meal is a bowl of Lotus Seed with White Fungus Soup ($5.90). It was light and refreshing, but I feel the white fungus can be slightly more substantial.

Sheng Yi Fa Lor Mee @ Clementi Ave 3 (Clementi Central) - Great To Have My Favourite Lor Mee Back

IMG_2736

The popular Lor Mee in Clementi is back again. After moving out from Blk 443 Clementi Ave 3, it was temporary re-located to West Coast Drive. Glad to inform you that Sheng Yi Fa Lor Mee is once again back at the same coffee shop at Blk 443 Clementi Ave 3.

IMG_2739

The stall still maintains the same pricing of $4 and $5 for a bowl of Lor Mee. It comes with braised pork belly, deep fried dumpling, ngor hiang and fried fish nugget. I remembered back in West Coast Drive, they added crunchy flour bits but back at its root, it has decided to remove them. Customers still can help themselves to their preference of chilli, ginger and black vinegar.

IMG_2742

Why I like Sheng Yi Fa's lor mee is because of its gravy. Unlike other stalls which is starchy and gooey, their version is more like a drinkable braising sauce, packet with depth and robustness.

IMG_2743

I was lucky to be able to make some small talk with the stall uncle. Apparently the uncle is asked to come out of retirement (ya once again) by the coffeeshop owner. It is a collaboration between the coffeeshop owner and the uncle. He is imparting his skill to the coffeeshop staffs, hence you can see them preparing and cooking your bowl of lor mee. However uncle is still around for the time being to oversee the consistency.

Shanghai Noodle . Lor Mee @ Geylang East Centre Food Centre - Lor Mee With Chunky Fried Fish For $3

IMG_1420

Located at the stretch of hawker stalls at Geylang East Centre Food Centre, facing the road is Shanghai Noodle. Lor Mee selling Lor Mee, Chicken Chop Noodle, Pork Chop Noodle and Shredded Chicken Noodle. I only tried the Lor Mee as that is what most of the customers ordered.

IMG_1412
Lor Mee 3.5/5

The bowl of Lor Mee ($3) comes brimming with different ingredients such as braised pork belly, fried fish, braised egg and bean sprouts. I could not help noticing that the "Lor" or gravy is without eggs, it was sort of disappointing. The gravy itself is not as robust and starchy compared to many other places too.

IMG_1416

IMG_1418

I would recommend adding the chilli sauce and garlic, and give the bowl of noodle a good toss. The addition of the chilli and garlic will give the flavour a boost. I enjoyed the luscious topping of braised pork belly which is tender and juicy. The noodle was also well cooked, not over done, still have not al dente texture. As for the fried fish, while it is chunky, the batter is lackluster. It was pre-fried and not crispy.

IMG_1423

The Lor Mee here may not be the best but it still provides a comforting meal to fill the hungry stomach. It is also value for money with the amount of ingredients for just $3. While it is not my best, I did observe it has its own regulars during my lunch there.

Seow Choon Hua Restaurant @ Sultan Gate (Beach Road) - Handmade Foo Chow Fishball and Yen Pi

SeowChoonHua3

Located along Sultan Gate in Beach Road, stepping into Seow Choon Hua Restaurant, you will find oneself stepping into coffeeshop with interior dated back to the early 80s.  As per my understanding, it has been around for more than 70 years. It offers a number of noodle dishes and its known for the handmade Foo Chow fishballs and dumplings.

SeowChoonHua6
Foo Chow Style Lor Mee 3/5

First is the Foo Chow Style Lor Mee ($5/$6). I have to admit I do not know what is Foo Chow Style but I find the version is a bit lighter than the usual. The "Lor" or gravy for the noodle is light and not as starchy. Why I didn't quite like the gravy which I find lacking depth, I applauded the lavish offering of ngoh hiang, egg, char siew, fish cake and deep fried dumplings that comes with it.

SeowChoonHua7

SeowChoonHua10
Red Wine Chicken Mee Sua 3/5

Like the Lor Mee, I find the gravy of the Red Wine Chicken Mee Sua ($5/$6) lacked the robustness and depth. The taste of the red glutinous wine lees was quite mild in the bowl of mee sua. Apart from that, it is a decent bowl with silky mee sua and tender chicken pieces.

SeowChoonHua5
Foo Chow Mixed Soup 4.2/5

Our favourite probably is the Foo Chow Mixed Soup ($6 - $10) which comes with an assortment of Foo Chow Fish Ball, Yen Pi, Dumpling and Fish Dumpling. We also ordered a bowl of kway teow soup to go with it.

SeowChoonHua14

For those that is used to eating factory made fish ball, you will find the Foo Chow Fish Ball's texture is kind of soft, almost pillowy. It doesn't comes with the bouncy, QQ texture that we usual have. Biting into the huge golf ball size Foo Chow Fish Ball, you will also find marinated minced pork filling in it.

SeowChoonHua16

Not forgetting the Foo Chow Yen Pi, which I am really curious as I have never heard or eaten before. The shape looks similar to our wanton dumpling but its puffed up with lots more minced meat and chestnut filling wrapped with wanton skin. The result is more meat less skin, unlike our wanton is more skin less meat. Some people says that it is like eating a crossbreed of wanton and siew mai.

SeowChoonHua1

I find the lor mee and red wine mee suace pretty average here. I would recommend the Foo Chow Fish Ball and Yen Pi, which is very uncommon nowadays in Singapore, especially they are hand made some more. Besides what we tried, the restaurant also offers fried nian gao and suan pan zi if you want to try them in your next visit.
