Dehesa @ North Canal Road - Introducing Power Lunch Sets

20180403_115629_HDR

Known for its nose to tail dining concept, Dehesa at North Bridge Road has launched a new lunch menu. But not too worry, the dishes are nothing too exotic for your weekday palate. Known as Power Lunch Sets, the menu consists of simply steak, ribs and halloumi cheese as a vegetarian option.

But why 'Power Lunch', you will know at the sight of the dishes. Both Ribeye Steak ($25 for 180g) and Hanger Steak ($23 for 150g) come with crispy potatoes and salad. The crispy potatoes are not your regular wedges, but Dehesa Patatas also known as Patatas Bravas. Sliced, layered and baked, after which the slab of layered potatoes will be cut into strips and deep fried. Hence you get this extremely crispy exterior with fluffy core.

Hanger Steak 3/5

Ribeye Steak is always a safe option when comes to steak, but if you are into a gamier taste, try the Hanger Steak. I like how the sweet-tanginess of the homemade garlic aioli served at the side balances the richness of the meats.

Halloumi Cheese 3/5

As much as it may seem a little out of place, the Halloumi Cheese ($22) with quinoa is an apt vegetarian option. Nestled above a heap quinoa, leafy greens and red onions, the grilled cheese holds a firm savoury bite, while the grains is no less satisfying than the crispy potatoes when it has soaked up the tasty brava sauce and carries hint of smokiness from paprika.

Pack of Ribs 3/5

Sous-vide for 12 hours before braised and seared, the Pack of Ribs ($25) came with a shiny molasses glaze. The meat simply falls off the bone as you attempt to lift one with your finger. I really love the molasses sauce for its rich and dark caramel taste. I would have loved it even more if not for the porky taste.

If you are in for a afternoon tipple, simple cocktails and house pours are available too.

By The Fire @ East Coast Road

IMG_1410ed

Alibabar the Hawker Bar at the junction of East Coast Road and Joo Chiat Road seems to be a prosperity ground for any hawker start up with the likes of Aston and Saveur, which move on to opening their own restaurants and branches. The latest tenant is By the Fire, opened by Immanuel Tee by started Immanuel French Kitchen at Bukit Merah and his partner Alexander Chong who helmed the kitchen at By The Fire.

Little Squid 4.2/5

The Little Squid ($9.90) comes with Thai sweet dipping sauce, is a good starter to go with a bottle of beer. The lightly battered squid is deep fried to a crisp exterior while the inside is still tender. Very enjoyable and addictive.

IMG_1398ed
Scotch Egg 4.5/5

The Scotch Egg ($6.90) is not a common item on most restaurant menu and I am glad By The Fire decides to serve this. The breaded minced pork with soft boiled egg and purple cabbage coleslaw is not only beautiful on the plate but palate too. I have tried a couple of scotch egg elsewhere but nothing beats this, especially the well marinated minced pork.

Keystone's Seaweed Pasta 3.8/5

A popular dish at By The Fire is the Keystone's Seaweed Pasta ($8.90). Top mark for the concept using angel hair pasta cooked in aglio olio style, shio kombu and sakura ebi. Although the dish came across a bit too salty, I can tell this is a very good dish with the rich and complex flavours that worked harmoniously.

IMG_1409ed
Grilled Pork Cheek 3.5/5

It was a hate and love affair with the Grilled Pork Cheek ($15.90). The grilled pork cheek confit glazed with Japanese curry oil, served with potato and pumpkin salad literally melted in the mouth. However, it came across too oily.

IMG_1404ed
BBQ Pork Ribs 4/5

It felt like I was have a Sunday BBQ with the BBQ Pork Ribs ($14.90) served with macaroni and cheese. The grilled pork ribs glazed with home secret BBQ sauced has a nice smokey flavour on top of the sweet BBQ sauce. Just need to get your hands dirty with the fork tender ribs. It will be finger licking good.

Squid Ink Pasta 4/5

For the price and portion, I think the Squid Ink Pasta ($12.90) is quite value for money. The spaghetti pasta cooked in squid ink cream sauce, served with grilled scallops, spring onions and bonito flakes will be a delightful slurping goodness for the hungry stomach.

Grilled Hangar Steak 4/5

Last but not least the Grilled Hangar Steak ($19) is cooked perfectly to medium rare. The charred onglet steak (200gram) is served with brown sauce, shallot confit and crispy potato. As the hangar steak is quite tough, I would say this is cooked to a nice tender bite.

Overall, By The Fire serves up some delicious and affordable dishes that is comparable to restaurant quality. It is definitely a place I will not mind going back again.

The Exchange @ Asia Square Tower 1

IMG_5372

Back in July 2012 when I attended the Heineken Star Serve event at The Exchange, the organiser was very kind to order us some finger food to go with the beer.

IMG_5360
Crispy White Bait 4/5

This is my first time seeing and having such big Crispy White Bait ($13). The fried white bait was big and fat so it was quite enjoyable biting into the meaty texture. The saltiness of the white bait is the perfect reason for me to wash it down with more beer.

IMG_5362
Truffle and Parmesan Fries 4/5

I like how the Truffle & Parmesan Fries ($10) was served in a rustic bucket. The combo of flavours from the truffle oil and parmesan simply made the fries tasted a notch better.

IMG_5365
Skewers and Sharing Platters 4/5

I couldn't really make out what the organiser had ordered but it seems to be that they have ordered the Chicken and Lamb Skewers, Sharing Platter and other nibbles sides. Simply loved and enjoyed the platter of nibbles especially with a glass of ice cold Heineken beer.

IMG_5382
Hangar Steak 4.5/5

You seldom get to see restaurants having Hangar Steak on their menu. Hangar steak is a cut that is prized for its flavour and weights about 450g to 675g. It is usually served medium or medium rare or it will be too tough for consumption. The 200g Hangar Steak ($40) I had was very bloody but extremely flavourful. If you don't like your steak too rare, this is not for you.
