What's the silliest thing you've done with your siblings during Lunar New Year?

IMG_0341ed

What does Lunar New Year mean to you? Is it a time for feasting, house visiting, getting red packets or just a holiday? For me it is about "Bonding" - spending time and sharing the fun and laughter with your families, friends and loved ones. Most of us are usually too busy with our individual commitments or may have been living/working abroad. Lunar New Year is the time for us to catch up with one another, to reminisce and strengthen the bonds with one another. This is the time to gather and re-ignite that emotional attachment with your families, friends and loved ones.

3Z5A0218ed

In our family, during Lunar New Year, this form of bonding is always fun and at times comes with many silly moments. For example, my siblings and I love pineapple tarts and we will be fighting to see who can eat the most. During our younger days, we would even imitate lion dancing in the house. Now we are too old for it but that does not stop us from joining in the fun with our nieces sometimes.

What's the silliest thing you've done with your siblings during Lunar New Year? Share your stories on HSBC Singapore’s Facebook page and stand to win S$100 worth of dining vouchers from Conrad Centennial Singapore or a festive hamper from DEAN & DELUCA.

Do take this Lunar New Year to spend time with your families, friends and loved ones, with some of these great offers for HSBC Credit Cardholders.

Lee Kum Kee, a household name for 126 years for its vast variety of sauces and condiments for Chinese and local cooking. IMG_4361ed

L'Atelier TiramiSu @ The Central Clarke Quay

IMG_3114ed

A family run cafe, L'Atelier TiramiSu has opened its door at the basement of The Central @ Clarke Quay. L'Atelier TiramiSu which means the The Tiramisu workshop sells only 1 type of cakes, Tiramisu. Baked freshly daily at the cafe. L'Atelier TiramiSu is probably the only Tiramisu concept cafe in Singapore. Hidden in the basement of The Central, it easiest way is to find the cafe is to take Exit F of Clark Quay MRT station.

IMG_3085ed

Don't be mislead that the cafe sells only the usual Italian dessert of caffeine, mascarpone cheese and cocoa powder. At L'Atelier TiramiSu, they have infused exquisite flavours to the classic taste of tiramisu creating a perfect blend of exquisite and traditional. Currently L'Atelier offers 4 different flavours in the Classico, Lychee, Dark Cherry and Matcha. Interestingly, L'Atelier TiramSu's tiramisu is made using the Bain-Marie method and laced with different liqueurs.

IMG_3098ed
Dark Cherry Tiramisu 4/5 and Classico Tiramisu 4.2/5

The Dark Cherry Tiramisu (slice $6.80/pc, cake $48) is laced with a combination of orange liqueur and cognac. It  has a strong alcohol bitterness that was nicely balanced with the sweetness of the cherry. It has a much stronger flavour compared to the other 3 tiramsu I tried. This will be well received with those that like their tiramisu to have a strong liqueur content.

If the dark cherry is the north pole, the best seller Classico (slice $6.80/pc, cake $48) will be the south pole. The classic tiramsu was light, smooth and creamy coupled with aromatic coffee soaked layers. By the way, the coffee used to make their tiramisu is from Liberty Coffee beans.

IMG_3111ed
Matcha Tiramisu 4.5/5 and Lychee Tiramisu 3.8/5

Matcha Tiramisu (slice $6.80/pc, cake $48) may not be new but the version at L'Atelier TiramiSu is laced with dark rum. The sweetness of the green tea soaked biscuit together with the creamy lightness of the cake was a delightful enjoyment.

While the others enjoyed the fruity Lychee Tiramisu (slice $6.80/pc, cake $48) which is laced with Lychee liqueur and vodka, it fell just short for me. I thought the liqueur content was a tad too much. It shadowed the refreshing fruity lychee flavour I was expecting. Nevertheless, that is one of the reasons why there are different flavours to suit each individual's palate.

IMG_3101ed
Sampling Set

For those that cannot decide which flavours to go for, you may want to check out the Sampling Set ($15). The sampling set offers you a glimpse of each flavours before deciding whether to get a slice or the whole cake. Each cake measures 7 inch.

IMG_3089ed
Latte 4/5

IMG_3091ed
Camomile Honey 4/5

To complement with the delectable tiramisu, L'Atelier TiramiSu also offers a selection of beverage. For caffeine lovers, the cafe uses a blend from Liberty Coffee. Non-caffeine drivers can try a range of Latisaniere Teas imported from France or Arizona Teas from America. We tried the Latte ($4.50) and Camomile Honey ($3). Drinking the Camomile Honey Tea is like doing a science experiment in the lab. First you pour the tea from the 150ml beaker into the glass of ice cubes made from the tea. Then you add the syrup from the 50ml beaker to the glass.

IMG_3086ed

L'Atelier TiramiSu is more of a takeaway shop with its small seating capacity of 10-12 people. If you decide to takeaway, the packaging comes with an elegant black and red box which is also appropriate as a gift.

The King Louis Grill and Bar @ Vivocity

IMG_2319ed

Voted Best Family Restaurant in Parents World for 2 consecutive years in 2011 and 2012, The King Louis Grill and Bar is Singapore first medieval restaurant. Tucked in a corner at Vivocity on the third level (beside Daiso), the restaurant has a castle theme decor and armored knights that kept the young and old equally fascinated.

IMG_2326ed
Teriyaki Chicken Salad 3.8/5

To whet up our appetite for the banquet feast, we started with the Teriyaki Chicken Salad ($13.80) that comes with fresh garden salad, grilled chicken breast meat topped with teriyaki sauce and parmesan cheese. While the individual components stood out, I felt that the teriyaki sauce was too much masking off the freshness of the greens.

IMG_2329ed
Signature Mushroom Soup 3.5/5

The homemade Signature Mushroom Soup ($8.90) comes with a mix of button and shiitake mushrooms served with garlic and herbs bread. The creamy mushroom soup was comforting and hearty. The serving was pretty huge too. While I found it a tad salty the rest of the table disagreed with me.

IMG_2334ed
Platter C 3/5

When you have a group of diners, it is always good to have a platter for sharing before the mains are served. We tried the Platter C ($21.90) which comes with chicken drumlets, banana bacon bites, golden calamari, prawn twisters and crispy wedges. Not a big fan of fried food but the prawn twister was pretty good. The drumlets on the other hand was dried and bland. The banana bacon bites was interesting but did not have the wow factor.

IMG_2342ed
Queen Victoria (Meat & Seafood) 4/5

The menu at The King Lousi Grill and Bar is conceptualized for one to feast like a king and hence you can find items like Knight Banquet, Queen Banquet and King Banquet on the menu. For the banquet, one can opt for meat, seafood or either both.

We tried the Queen Banquet, Queen Victoria (Meat & Seafood) that serves about 4-5 people ($166.50). The queen banquet comes with roasted beef with black pepper sauce, premium BBQ baby back ribs, pan seared snapper with wasabi mayo sauce, oven baked king prawns with melted Australian cheese, sauteed scallop with garlic and wine sauce.

IMG_2345ed
Queen Victoria (Meat & Seafood) 4/5

Among all the premium BBQ baby back ribs was my favourite. The baby back ribs was tender and fell off the bone easily. The roasted beef was also nicely executed, tender and succulent. While I enjoyed the scallop, the snapper and prawn was not as good compared to the meat. The snapper was dried and the prawn was mushy.

Overall I still find The King Louis Grill and Bar is a great place for family and large group dining. The restaurant also comes with an unblock view looking across Sentosa island, diners can catch the firework from Universal Studio Singapore and the crane dance from Resort World Singapore while feasting like a king at The King Louis Grill and Bar.

Noodlestar (丰面人物) @ Jalan Sultan

IMG_6777

Have you heard of Koo Kee Yong Tau Fu (高记酿豆腐)at People's Park Food Centre? The founder's son Mr Chong YH took over the business in 1982 and expand the business bringing Koo Kee Yong Tau Fu out of People's Park to various food courts and hawker centres island-wide. With various brands under Koo Kee, it brings you Noodlestar (丰面人物)  offering good and fresh ingredients food especially the noodles in a restaurant setting. Thus Noodlestar (丰面人物) is born.

Noodlestar restaurant is not just about noodles. In face they have quite an extensive menu ranging from dim sums, rice, noodles, cooked food, soup and desserts dishes at affordable and reasonable price.

IMG_6819
Crispy Fried Silver Fish with Pepper & Salt 4.2/5

While waiting for the group to arrive, we started off with some appetizers on the menu. We started off with the Crispy Fried Silver Fish with Pepper & Salt ($8). The lightly battered crispiness and the fatty silver fish meat was an enjoyable starter. I could not resist going back for more. Best to go with a glass of beer.

IMG_6779
Sliced Pork with Garlic Sauce 3.8/5

Next up was the Sliced Pork with Garlic Sauce ($4.80). Hidden underneath the pork slices was a mountain of refreshing shredded cucumber. If the sliced pork was eaten alone, the sweetness from the garlic sauce maybe a bit overpowering. However if eaten together with the shredded cucumber, it gave the dish a refreshing balance.

IMG_6788
Cordyceps Flower Herbal Soup 3.5/5

The nourishing Cordyceps Flower Herbal Soup ($8.80) is the Chef's new creation. The soup was cooked with black chicken and a combination of herbs that helps to improve blood circulation, immune system and digestion system.

IMG_6859
Doubled Boiled Ginseng Chicken Soup 3.8/5

The Doubled Boiled Ginseng Chicken Soup ($8.80) is another nourishing soup that is available on the menu. This soup has a stronger herbal taste compared to the cordyceps flower herbal soup.

IMG_6800
Steamed Juicy Meat Dumpling 4.5/5

More does not always mean better. I have tried Xiao Long Bao that was overly chunky with their fillings thus losing that balance in texture and flavours. I am pleasantly surprised that the Steamed Juicy Meat Dumpling ($4.80) or Xiao Long Bao at Noodlestar was rather delicate in execution. The subtle Xiao Long Bao was probably one of the best I have tried.

IMG_6805
Dumpling with Hot and Sour Sauce 3.5/5

The marriage of the Dumpling with Hot & Sour sauce ($4.80) did not really work out for me. Don't get me wrong, individually the dumpling and sauce was good. I would greatly have them separately but they are just not compatible with each other.

IMG_6812
Four Season Happiness Dumpling 3.8/5

This is such a happy dish visually with its vibrant colours. The Four Season Happiness Dumpling ($4.80) comes in 4 colourful fillings. They were broccoli (green), egg yolk (yellow), black fungus (black) and ham (pink). Although the flavours were rather mild what stood out was the dumpling skin. After trying 3 of their dumpling dishes, the soft and thin texture of the dumpling skin definitely won my heart.

IMG_6823
Pan Fried Pork Dumpling 4.5/5

I was told that the Pan Fried Pork Dumpling ($4.80) is one of their popular dishes on the menu. I can understand why since I have already sang praises of their dumplings. This is another dish on the menu which I would order again.

IMG_6831
La Mian with Braised Beef 4.2/5

The star at Noodlestar has to be their noodles. Having spent years perfecting the art of noodle making, they are of the highest quality. The La Mian here is freshly made on the spot upon order. The uniqueiness of Noodlestar's La Mian is their thinner and springier texture. The La Mian with Braised Beef ($6.80) was simply delish which showcased the characteristic of the thin silky noodle.

IMG_6838
La Mian with In-house Stewed Pork Ribs 4/5

IMG_6868
La Mian with Crispy Fried Chicken Chop 4/5

If you don't take beef, there are many other La Mian combination on their menu that you can enjoy slurping the high quality noodle. The La Mian with In-house Stewed Pork Ribs ($9.80) and La Mian with Crispy Fried Chicken Chop ($7.80) are worth trying.

IMG_6830
Wok-Fried Broad Noodle Shanghai Style 4.2/5

Broad Noodle? I have never heard of it neither tried it before. This is a must try at Noodlestar. The Wok-Fried Broad Noodle Shanghai Style ($8.80) wok fried in a fragrant sweet sauce and the noodle had a bite to it that was pleasant and enjoyable.

IMG_6872
Roast Pork and Shrimp Fried Rice  4.2/5

Like I mentioned earlier, Noodlestar offers an extensive menu. If dim sum and noodles were not enough to satisfy your hungry stomach, the Roast Pork and Shrimp Fried Rice is the quintessential comfort food. Consistency could be found in each morsels of the fluffy rice.

IMG_6852
Roasted Chicken with Secret Home-made Sauce 4/5

The Roasted Chicken with Secret Home-made sauce ($11.80 half, $22 whole) had nice crispy skin while the meat was tender and moist.

IMG_6843
Deep Fried Beancurd with Cereal Flakes 4.2/5

The Deep Fried Beancurd with Cereal Flakes ($12) were very addictive. The silky tofu and fragrant cereal flakes with the aromatic curry leaves were an excellent pairing.

IMG_6878
Golden Sweet Potato 4/5

The Golden Sweet Potato ($4) is best served warm. The hearty dessert with its chewy texture warmed the heart with each bite.

IMG_6873
Chilled Mango & Pomelo  and Chilled Almond Beancurd 4.2/5

For cold desserts, I enjoyed both the Chilled Mango & Pomelo with sago and Chilled Almond Beancurd with honey and logan. A cold and refreshing sweet note to wrap up a wonderful meal.

I think Noodlestar will be a shining star in the F&B scene with its quality of food at affordable price. Currently they have 2 more outlets at Bugis Village and Marina Bay Sand food court.
