Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway @ Bukit Batok - Ex Master Chef Finalist Opens Latest Stall In The West

JiakSongStall-2

Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway is opened by ex-Master Chef finalist Aaron Wong. I first went to queue at his first stall when it opened at Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centre, but it was sold out by the time I reached there. Since then, I have been procrastinating to check out the stall as I heard the queue can be up to an hour. So this time round, I decided to drop by his latest stall at block 177 Bukit Batok West Avenue 8 with a few of my friends.

Signature All-In-One Combo 4.2/5

JiakSongBukitBatok6

I decided to have the Signature All-In-One Combo ($5.50), which comes with the handmade mee hoon kway, minced pork, pork slices, pork ball, shrimp ball and ikan bilis. It also comes with a bowl of soup with an egg.

JiakSongBukitBatok11

Give the bowl of noodles a good toss to get the black sauce to coat the chewy dough. The first thing I notice is the amount of black sauce. It is not a lot. I would say it is just sufficient. The dough also has a more delectable chewy bite which I enjoyed. It is almost like having gnocchi. What surprises us is that there was a smoky flavour. I didn't see any stir-frying of the noodle; hence I suspect it is from the black sauce.

JiakSongBukitBatok14

Overall, I like the delicious bowl of mee hoon kway. There was a lot of textures at play complemented by the smoky flavour. I should try the soup version on the next visit to find out the difference.

Dine At Home During Circuit Breaker - Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle

PoonNahCity1

One of the hawker stall that I supported during the circuit breaker is Poon Nah City Home Made Noodle at City Plaza. With their island-wide delivery, I was able to order the handmade noodles and have them delivered to my home. I am glad to announce that they are continuing their islandwide delivery after the circuit breaker until further notice.

PoonNahCity4
Abalone Mee Hoon Kueh

If you have been following my blog, you probably known that I have visited the stall many years ago. Back then, I have enjoyed the textures of the handmade noodles but I wasn't quite impressed with the soup base. I thought it lacked depth and robustness. However, this time round when I had the Abalone Mee Hoon Kueh, the soup was so flavourful that finished it to the last drop.  For $12.50, the Abalone Mee Hoon Kueh comes with abalone, fish maw, ikan bilis and mani cai. With the amount of ingredients, I find it value for money too.

PoonNahCity2
Prawn Yu Mian Dry

Besides the soup version, they have the dry version in which the noodle is tossed in a dark sauce. I had the Prawn Yu Mian Dry which comes with prawn, minced pork, ikan bilis and mani cai.

PoonNahCity5
Dumpling Soup

Besides the variety of noodle dishes on the menu, the stall also sells other stuff such as Dumpling Soup and fried snacks. For the fried snacks, I decided to go for the Mixed Snacks, which includes Wu Xiang, Crispy Beancurd, Fish Cake, Sotong Ball. I am not one that is satisfied with just a bowl of noodles. Hence, i am delight to have these snacks to complete my meals.

SG Food on Foot - Best Eats In 2018

Best Eat 2018

We have come to the end of the year and it is another delicious year with lots of food. Year 2018 has been a year where we saw the boom of bubble tea and the emerge of private home dining scene. I will take this opportunity to do a wrap up for 2018, recapping the top ten places I have dined in 2018.

Tinoq Private Dining

TinoqPrivateDining31

I have the privileged to have a group of like-minded foodies who have been my greatest companions to check out a number of private home dinning places that have sprung up in recent time. One of them is Tinoq Private Dining by celebrity make-up artist, Tinoq Russell Goh. Tinoq is my opinion is my best private dining experience offering the full package. He i a good cook, preparing everything very scratch, as well as a entertaining host.

Mustard Seed Pop Up

MustardSeed21

Another private dining spot that make into my best eat for 2018 is Mustard Seed Pop Up. It is a Kaiseki style private home dining by Chef Ming Kiat. The food at most private home dining places are more homely style while Mustard Seed offers a more refine and restaurant style. I also like the chef's take of incorporating local ingredients into his kaiseki style dining.

Lucky House Cantonese Private Kitchen

LuckyHousePrivateKitchen22

Lucky House Cantonese Private Kitchen is probably the hottest private home dining spot in Singapore now. I heard that it is fully booked until October 2019. That is 10 months waiting list, probably longer than any other Michelin starred restaurants. I am lucky to score two seating in 2018 at Chef Sam Wong's home before he gets some popular that it is impossible to get a reservation. What I enjoyed here it is rustic cooking using natural seasoning, charcoal cooking, allowing the fresh ingredients to shine.

The Spot

TheSpot33

One of the newest restaurant in 2018, The Spot at Marina One impresses me with the creative and mastery in fusing modern European cuisine with Southeast Asian ingredients by Chef Lee Boon Seng. And what makes me look forward to in each dish, is the unique sauce that is paired with the food. It's like embarking a discovery tour on the different type of sauces he will be using to pair with the mains.

Origin Grill

OriginGrill15

It has been a while since I have a good piece of steak, I am lucky enough to be able to check out Origin Grill at Shangri La Singapore, another new restaurant in 2018. Over here, I was able to indulge in the priced meat such as the John Stone Grass-fed Dry-aged for 35 days, Snow-aged Full Blood Wagyu A4 and Shiro Kin Full Blood Wagyu.

The Chinese Kitchen (厨神私房菜)

TheChineseKitchen5

Probably under the radar is The Chinese Kitchen (厨神私房菜) in Lavender. It is opened by opened by local renowned Chef Austen Ong, the former president of society of Chinese cuisine Chef (Singapore). He is also dubbed the 厨神 (God of the Kitchen) by the culinary industry, probably from his numerous achievement such as winning the Gold medalist of Asian Cuisine in the 8th FHA International Salon Culinaire, Most Creative award in the 4th World Championship of Chinese Cuisine and Champion of Taipei's World Culinary Contest in both 2005 and 2007. The food here is reasonable priced, comfort traditional dishes with a touch of fineness.

Chui Huay Lim Teochew Restaurant

ChuiHuayLim21

Being a Teochew, I always have a soft spot for good Teochew Cuisine. Chui Huay Lim Teochew Restaurant makes it into the list because it is a new discovery for 2018. I have not known of its existence until I visited back in September 2018. It is located inside the historical 170-year-old Chui Huay Lim Club at Keng Lee Road, in the Newton area. The restaurant under Jumbo Group has been around for 7 years.

Folklore

Folklore21

I have lost count the number of times I have visited Folklore at Destination Singapore. I never get tired of the food here. There is always something new on the menu. Chef Damian seems to have a magic hat where he will consistently put on the menu heritage dishes that is lost or rarely served in restaurant anymore.

L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles

L32GeylangHandmadeNoodles8

There are also a couple of hawker stalls that make it into my best eat in 2018. One of them is L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles at Geylang Road. In 2018, I managed to visit a number of ban mian stalls but this stall stood out for me as it gets the ticks for the noodle, soup and chilli. It has everything that I am looking for in a bowl of good ban mian.

Charlie's Peranakan Food

CharlesPeranakanFood6

My last spot in the list is reserved for Charlie's Peranakan Food at Golden Mile Food Centre. Charlie is a baba chef who comes out of retirement after 8 years to open the stall selling Peranakan food. I am glad that I have the chance to try his cooking and dishes. Who says we can't find cheap and delicious Peranakan cuisine in the hawker centre.

With this I present to you my Best Eat In 2018. I am also like to take this opportunity to thank all my readers and followers for the supports all this years. Last but at least, wishing everyone a wonderful 2019.

China Whampoa Home Made Noodle @ Whampoa Makan Place - Popular Ban Mian Stall That Needs To Queue More Than Half An Hour

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle16

After trying a couple of popular ban mian stalls such like Poon Nah City Handmade Noodle and
L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles, my next ban mian hunt brought me to China Whampoa Home Made Noodle at Whampoa Makan Place & Market. Apparently this is very popular and you may end up queuing more than half an hour to try the noodle dishes.

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle18
Homemade Yu Mee with Prawn Soup 4/5

For the soup version, we ordered the Homemade Yu Mee with Prawn Soup ($4/$5) and Homemade Mee Hoon Kueh with Prawn Soup ($4/$5). The texture of the homemade noodles is cooked to an enjoyable texture that still retains a bite to it. For the soup, it is the clear type with a very sweet note. It is understand that their soup is made from ikan bilis and soya beans only, without pork bones.

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle21
Homemade Mee Hoon Kueh with Prawn Soup 4/5

Unique here is the used of mani cai or sweet leaf, giving the soup the additional boost in sweetness. You can also find marinated minced pork balls, that is tender and flavourful. Unlike some ban mian stalls, the bowl of noodle does not come with egg.

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle11
Homemade Ban Mian Dry 4.2/5

ChinaWhampoaHandMadeNoodle14

The Dry Ban Mian ($4/$5) stood out more than the soup version for me. Give the handmade noodle a good toss in the dark soy sauce and chilli sauce, coating each strand of the noodle. While the soup version is more about the character of the soup, the dry version with its delectable sauces, showcases the texture of the noodle more.

IMG_1151

Overall China WHampoa Home Made Noodle dishes out a good bowl of ban mian but it is not my favourite. I prefer those soup based that is richer and more robust with the strong ikan bilis flavour in it and I want my egg.

Poon Nah City Handmade Noodle @ City Plaza - Popular Ban Mian But Not My Favourite

PoonNahCity4

When I reviewed about L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles, a follower asked me to check out Poon Nah City Handmade Noodle at City Plaza. Hence I specially made a trip down to check the ban mian located in the food court on the top of City Plaza. It is quite a small food court with narrow walkway. It offers a variety of noodle dishes as well as deep fried items.

PoonNahCity1

After browsing the extensive menu, I decided to try the Prawn Ban Mian Dry ($3.50) and Fish Maw Ban Mian Soup ($3.50). Besides the prawn an fish maw, it offers other ingredients such scallop, abalone and sliced fish noodle.

PoonNahCity10
Prawn Ban Mian Dry 3.5/5

The Prawn Ban Mian Dry ($3.50) comes with prawn, minced pork, wolfberry leaves and ikan bilis. The handmade noodle has a bouncy texture which has a delectable bite. That is probably the full stop as I didn't find the sweet sauce and chilli have that punch that make the bowl of noodle exceptional.

PoonNahCity7
Fish Maw Ban Mian Soup 3/5

PoonNahCity9

As for the soup version, I decided to have the Fish Maw Ban Mian Soup ($3.50). It usually come with pork, chicken and seafood but fish maw is rather rare. Hence I decided to order a bowl to try. Once again, I enjoyed the texture of the noodle. I can't deny the handmade noodle here is really good but they need to work on the other components. Just like the dry version, the soup is tasteless, it lacks the depth and sweetness of the ikan bilis.

IMG_0605

While I didn't find the ban mian here as good as L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles, it seems that the stall has its loyal followings judging from the crowd. I guess I have a heavy palate and prefer flavours that is rich and heavy. I checked against some reviews online and it seems their standards have declined over the years.

L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles @ Geylang Road - Probably The Best Ban Mian In The East

L32GeylangHandmadeNoodles8

After reading and hearing good reviews of L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles's Ban Mian, I decided to visit the coffeeshop in which it is located at the junction of Geylang Road and Geylang Lorong 32. My attention is drawn to the variety of ban mian such as chicken, fishball, meatball, sliced fish, clam and fish head besides the normal pork one.

L32GeylangHandmadeNoodles2
Prawn Ban Mian Soup 4.5/5

The Prawn Ban Mian Soup ($5) comes with 2 big fresh prawns, egg, minced pork, vegetables and topped with ikan bilis that sweeten the already flavourful soup. The star has to be the texture of the noodles that is cooked to al dente. I can understand why many have given good reviews of their ban mian now. I am glad that I take the time to check it out.

L32GeylangHandmadeNoodles10
Pork Ban Mian Dry 4.5/5

L32GeylangHandmadeNoodles16

For the dry version, I gone for the Pork Ban Mian Dry ($4.30) which is the cheapest of all the selection. Compared to the soup version, the dry version allows you to appreciate the texture of the handmade noodles even more. The enjoyable bite of the noodle is complemented by the robust and fragrant chilli sauce, elevated by the ikan bilis. The accompany soup even comes with a whole egg drop.

L32GeylangHandmadeNoodles13

After trying L32 Geylang Handmade Noodles myself, I have to agree that the ban mian here is top notch. There is nothing to fault the texture of the handmade noodle. The chilli is spicy and fragrant. The soup is robust and flavourful. It is like the whole package for a good bowl of ban mian.

Hui Wei Chilli Ban Mian (回味辣椒板面) @ Geylang Bahru Food Centre - Shiok Dry Chilli Ban Mian

HuiWeiChilliBanMian5

With the re-opening of Geylang Bahru Food Centre after its renovation, it is great to see many familiar stalls back. One of them is Hui Wei Chilli Ban Mian (回味辣椒板面) which has temporary moved to Toa Payoh during the renovation. The stall is now back and continue to sell a variety of noodle dishes such as Dry/Soup Ban Mian, a variety of La Mian, Seafood Ee Mian, Ke Kou Mian, Fu Zhou Fishball Noodle and more.

HuiWeiChilliBanMian8
Signature Chilli Ban Mian 4.5/5

Of the many noodle dishes offering at the stall, a must try is the Signature Chilli Ban Mian ($4/$6). The bowl of handmade noodle comes with ikan bilis, meatball, poached egg, fried shallots, pork lard and minced meat.

HuiWeiChilliBanMian9

HuiWeiChilliBanMian11

I would recommend to give a good toss to coat the noodles evenly with the spicy and fragrant chilli sauce. The spicy level may be hard for some to tolerate and this is exactly why I enjoy it. It is damn shiok! Not only is the dry chilli sauce shiok, it has a nice aromatic kick to it that complement the noodle excellently. Besides the chilli sauce that holds the dish together, a worthy note is the handmade noodle that has a firm yet bouncy texture.

HuiWeiChilliBanMian15

During my visit, there is constantly a long queue waiting to try their handmade noodles. It actually quite amazing to see how the humble little stall is able to offer 18 different noodle dishes on the menu.

Grandma Ban Mee (老妈子板面) @ Amoy Street Food Centre - Shiok Dry Chilli Ban Mee

IMG_7753ed

Grandma Ban Mee  (老妈子板面) at Amoy Food Centre is one of the newest addition to the food centre. It starts its business around December 2015, last year. I was in the vicinity the other day so I joined the queue to give the new stall a try.

IMG_7754ed
Ban Mee Soup 2.8/5

IMG_7755ed

I had the Ban Mee Soup ($4) which is quite value of money with the bowl of noodle filled to the brim with various ingredients such as mushrooms, ikan bilis and vegetables. The texture of the noodle is actually not bad, soft and has a little bit to it. Unfortunately, the soup lacked the depth and robustness to match the delightful ingredients.

IMG_7746ed
Dry Chilli Ban Mee 4/5

The highlight at Grandma Ban Mee has to be their Dry Chilli Ban Mee ($5) which comes with minced pork, egg, ikan bilis, mushroom, fried shallots and most importantly the signature dry chilli. Give it a good toss to give the noodle a good even coat of the hae bee (dried shrimp) chilli, for a elevated fiery kick and lift in flavour.

IMG_7757ed

After checking out Grandma Ban Mee, I would recommend trying the dry chilli ban mee. If you tolerant for spicy food is not too high, I would advice you to get a drink first. For the soup version, I think you can give it a miss.

Face to Face Noodle House (面对面) @ City Square Mall - Home of Original Sarawak Noodles with 105 Years of Heritage

IMG_6808ed

After Kin Kin Chilli Pan Mee, another well known brand in Malaysia, Face to Face Noodle House (面对面) has arrived on the shore of Singapore with its first outlet at City Square Mall. Face to Face Noodle House has 105 years of heritage and 30 outlets around Malaysia, bringing the authentic Sarawak noodles to Singapore. The founder's great grandfather picked up the rare skill of making Jook Sing noodles, one of the rarest forms of noodle making. The noodles at Face to Face Noodle House is handmade daily without any preservatives.

IMG_6806ed
Traditional Sarawak Noodle 4.2/5

I have not tried the Sarawak Noodle ($8.90) in Malaysia but this is definitely the signature here. The sarawak noodle comes with minced pork, char siew, fried wanton and marinated spring onion. The star has to be the noodles for its springy texture. The char siew if has a bit more fats would be excellent.

IMG_6812ed
House Specialty Pan Mee 4/5

For those that prefers soup base noodles, the House Specialty Pan Mee ($8.90) comes with minced pork, crispy anchovies and onsen egg. The rich and intense broth together with the bouncy noodle complemented each other excellently for a comforting and satisfying bowl of pan mee.

IMG_6811ed
Genki Herbal Chicken Soup Pan Mee 4/5

To cater for the locate palate, Face to Face has also created the Curry Chicken Pan Mee and Genki Herbal Chicken Pan Mee ($12.90). I had the latter which comes with homemade noodles in traditional herbal soup served with tender chicken, enoki mushrooms and various herbs. The noodles used is thinner and softer compare to the others. It also feels more substantial with a huge piece of  tender chicken thigh.

IMG_6815ed
Hakka Yong Tau Foo 3/5

To complete the meal, Face to Face Noodle House also offers Yong Tau Foo and some snacks on their menu. We ordered the Five Treasure Set ($7.50) which has a bit of everything. The basket comes with chilli, ladyfingers, tofu, brinjal and bittergourd with meat stuffings.

IMG_9693

Face to Face Noodle House did manage to satisfy me for the excellent texture and smoothness in their homemade noodles. My only wish is they will open another outlet in the West of Singapore. Bringing their delicious Sarawak noodles nearer to my home.
