Five Star Hong Kong Style Handmade Dim Sum @ Shun Li Industrial Complex (Sims Drive) - Hidden Dim Sum Place In An Industrial Complex

FiveStarHongKongDimSum-03

There have been many media coverages of Five Star Hong Kong Style Handmade Dim Sum located in a coffeeshop at Mei Ling Street. It is known for its freshly handmade dim sum by Chef Yiu Wah Tai, who has 30 years of experience working at Shang Palace, Shangri La and Jiang Nan Chun, Four Seasons Hotel.

FiveStarHongKongDimSum-09

Chef Yiu has opened several Five Star Dim Sum around the island. However, not many people know that they have an outlet hidden on the seventh floor of an industrial building at Sims Drive. Furthermore, the place is air-conditioned!

FiveStarHongKongDimSum-07
Siew Mai 4.2/5, Har Gao 4.2/5

Whenever I have Dim Sum, I will order Siew Mai ($4.50) and Har Gao ($4.50). I find that this is the primary entry to judge whether the dim sum at the restaurant is good or not. The Siew Mai and Har Gao here did meet my expectation. The Siew Mai is plump and juicy, while the Har Gao comes with huge prawn wrapped in thin translucent skin.

FiveStarHongKongDimSum-12
Char Siew Cheong Fan 3/5, Prawn Cheong Fan 3.5/5

We also tried the Char Siew Cheong Fan ($4) and Prawn Cheong Fan ($4.50). I find these average, and the sauce is a bit too salty. However, it is value for money for the price and the amount of ingredients wrapped in the rice sheet.

FiveStarHongKongDimSum-15
Xiao Long Pau 3.5/5

While the Xiao Long Pau ($3.50) is plump and filled with delightful marinated pork filling, the skin was a bit thick for me. However, maybe they need to make the skin thicker to hold the generous filling.

FiveStarHongKongDimSum-13
Mala Dumpling 3/5

Though the Mala Dumpling ($4) sauce lacked the punch and fragrant, the dumpling itself is huge and stuffed with delectable filling.

FiveStarHongKongDimSum-05

The menu at the Sim Drive outlet is quite limited. There are only 18 items on the menu. We also tried Salted Egg Custard Buns, Char Siew Pau, Congees and Carrot Cake. There is nothing fancy with the dim sum items here, do not have high expectations. Instead, you get a taste of tradition with a generous portion at an affordable price. Unlike the other Five Star Dim Sum outlets, the outlet here also offers zichar dishes, herbal soup and claypot dishes.

Whampoa Keng @ Geylang Road - Opens Their 2nd Outlet In Geylang At The Corner Of Lorong 28

WhampoaKeng2

Whampoa Keng at Balestier Road has been a household in Singapore for their fish head steamboat. Fans of their fish head steamboat will be glad to know that they have opened a second outlet in Geylang. Besides the signature fish head steamboat, the restaurant also offers a variety of zichar dishes to complete the meal.

WhampoaKeng17
Signature Fish Head Steamboat Red Garoupa 4.2/5

We have to have their Signature Fish Head Steamboat when we visit Whampoa Keng. Diners can choose to have pomfret, red garoupa or batang sliced fish for the fish head steamboat. We had the Red Garoupa ($45/$55/$65/$75) for its chunky and firmer texture. Their fish head steamboat comes in 4 sizes (small, medium, large and x-large) too. We enjoyed the hearty and comforting soup, which also comes with yam, cabbage and seaweed. Compare to their balestier outlet, I thought the soup today is slightly on the sweet side, and the dried sole fish is not prominent. I still enjoy the fish head steamboat, just that I am picking bones as I have tried their original outlet, and I want them to improve.

WhampoaKeng9
Signature Crab Meat Foodstreet Tofu in Gravy 4.2/5

Besides the signature fish head steamboat, we also had a couple of their zichar dishes to complete the meal. The first dish we tried is the Signature Crab Meat Foodstreet Tofu in Gravy ($14/$20/$26). I love the accompany gravy with crabmeat complementing the silky tofu.

WhampoaKeng21
Deep Fried Nan Ru Pork Belly 3.5/5

The Deep Fried Nan Ru Pork Belly ($16/$24) was slightly disappointing for me. I am a big fan of fermented beancurd, and I thought the flavour didn't quite stand out to win over my tummy.

WhampoaKeng13
Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs with Golden Crispy Cod Strips 4.2/5

The Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs with Golden Crispy Cod Strips ($16/$24) is not new to me. I have eaten it elsewhere, and I have to say Whampoa Keng did an excellent job. The spare rib is tender and juicy, while not overly sweet. The crispy cod strips provided extra textural enjoyment.

WhampoaKeng24
Poached Chinese Spinach with Assorted Egg 4.5/5

Another dish that I find Whampoa Keng did very well is the Poached Chinese Spinach with Assorted Egg ($14/$21). The flavoursome soupy broth together with the century egg, salted duck egg and fresh chicken egg enliven a simple poached vegetable dish.

WhampoaKeng27
Claypot Indonesian Style Chicken 4/5

It is my first time having the Claypot Indonesian Style Chicken ($16/$24). It looks similar to 3 cups chicken, but the sauce is very different. The chicken is first fried to crisp and then tossed in a special Indonesian sauce with curry leaves.

WhampoaKeng1

Diners who have been to their Balestier outlet will know that it is always very crowded. Not many people are aware of the new outlet yet. So if you want to avoid the crowd, you can come here. They are opened until 1am daily. It is another excellent supper place for those staying in the East.

Note: This is an invited tasting.

Lucky Seafood Catering @ Geylang Lorong 17 - You Do Not Need To Travel To Ipoh For Handmade Lai Fun & Hakka Yong Tau Foo

LuckySeafoodCatering5

My last overseas travel was to Ipoh with a group of foodie friends to explore the food there. One of the places we visited is Dai Shu Geok (大树脚) Yong Tau Foo. That is when I get to know the local likes to have their Yong Tau Foo with a bowl of assam laksa. For those that are unable to travel to Ipoh during this pandemic period, I am glad to say that Lucky Seafood Catering at Geylang Lorong 17 offers a similar experience. They even handmade their own Lai Fun noodle at the stall. I have to give credit to Miss Tam Chiak for discovering and sharing the place.

LuckySeafoodCatering36

Approaching the stall, you will see a variety of fried Yong Tau Foo in the display for you to pick and choose. If you look beyond the display shelf, you will probably find some staffs making and frying the Yong Tau Foo on the spot.

LuckySeafoodCatering2
Yong Tau Foo 3.5/5

The Yong Tau Foo that you have chosen and picked will be served in a bowl of soup.

LuckySeafoodCatering15
Sak Kok Liew 4.5/5

A must-have is the Fried Jicama or better known as Sak Kok Liew in Cantonese. The mang or turnip is wrapped with dried shrimps and rolled into a circular shape with beancurd skin. This is then deep-fried to golden brown, giving it an enjoyable crispy bite on the exterior with a crunchy interior.

LuckySeafoodCatering20
Fried Tofu Skin 3/5

I am not a fan of Fried Tofu Skin if it is to be eaten plain. Over here, it is served with an accompanying dipping sauce. My recommendation is to dip it into the Assam Laksa, allowing the fried tofu skin to soak up the savoury broth.

LuckySeafoodCatering28
Assam Laksa 3/5

The highlight at Lucky Seafood Catering is their handmade Lai Fun noodle which is used in the Assam Laksa. I really love the freshness and the delectable texture. However, the assam laksa lacks the consistency from my friend's previous visit. We spoke to the owner, and it seems that he is continually adjusting his recipe to suit the customers' feedback. My advice is to keep to his original recipe, which makes him different from others.

LuckySeafoodCatering26
Lai Fun Soup 4/5

The best way to enjoy the freshly handmade Lai Fun Soup is to have it plain with some beansprouts and spring onion.

LuckySeafoodCatering16
Kon Loh Mee 3.8/5

If you not into spicy or plain, there is a third way to appreciate the Lai Fun in Kon Loh Mee style. The noodle is tossed in a dark savoury sauce and topped with minced meat.

LuckySeafoodCatering12
Curry Chee Cheong Fun 2.8/5

Besides the Yong Tau Foo, you can also order Curry Chee Cheong Fun here. This is a staple dish in Ipoh that comes with pigskin and long beans in a pool of curry sauce. I thought there was too much curry powder in the sauce for my liking. By the way, the cheong fun is sourced from a supplier. They do not make it themselves.

Aik Kee Haslet Soup @ Geylang East Centre Food Centre - One Of My Go To Places For Pig's Organ Soup

AikKeeHasletSoup4

I am not sure about you, but I am a big fan of pig's organ soup. Besides the tangy, peppery soup, it comes with a variety of ingredients. One of my favourites pig's organ soup stall is Aik Kee Haslet Soup at Geylang East Centre Food Centre.

AikKeeHasletSoup3
Pig's Organ Soup 4.2/5

AikKeeHasletSoup8

The Pig's Organ Soup here ranges from $4.50 to $7. I have the $5.50 portion which comes with thick slices of pork belly, pig's stomach, pig's intestine, pig's liver, pork balls and salted vegetables. I have come across many stalls that are quite stingy in the portion but not at Aik Kee. You can tell from the picture itself. All this will go to waste, if not for the tangy and peppery soup that is robust and packed with depth.

AikKeeHasletSoup7
Ngor Hiang 3.5/5

Besides the pig's organ soup, one can order the Ngor Hiang ($1.50 each) to complete the meal. The beancurd skin is deep fried to golden brown with enjoyable crispiness on the exterior. Unfortunately, I find it slightly on the salty side.

IMG_8108

Aik Kee Haslet Soup may not be as well known compared to the other more popular stalls, but in my opinion, it is on par or as good. It has been one of my go-to stalls whenever I have a craving for pig's organ soup.

Shanghai Noodle . Lor Mee @ Geylang East Centre Food Centre - Lor Mee With Chunky Fried Fish For $3

IMG_1420

Located at the stretch of hawker stalls at Geylang East Centre Food Centre, facing the road is Shanghai Noodle. Lor Mee selling Lor Mee, Chicken Chop Noodle, Pork Chop Noodle and Shredded Chicken Noodle. I only tried the Lor Mee as that is what most of the customers ordered.

IMG_1412
Lor Mee 3.5/5

The bowl of Lor Mee ($3) comes brimming with different ingredients such as braised pork belly, fried fish, braised egg and bean sprouts. I could not help noticing that the "Lor" or gravy is without eggs, it was sort of disappointing. The gravy itself is not as robust and starchy compared to many other places too.

IMG_1416

IMG_1418

I would recommend adding the chilli sauce and garlic, and give the bowl of noodle a good toss. The addition of the chilli and garlic will give the flavour a boost. I enjoyed the luscious topping of braised pork belly which is tender and juicy. The noodle was also well cooked, not over done, still have not al dente texture. As for the fried fish, while it is chunky, the batter is lackluster. It was pre-fried and not crispy.

IMG_1423

The Lor Mee here may not be the best but it still provides a comforting meal to fill the hungry stomach. It is also value for money with the amount of ingredients for just $3. While it is not my best, I did observe it has its own regulars during my lunch there.

Shi Wei Xian HongKong Tim Sum @ Aljunied Avenue 2 - Cheap And Good Handmade Dim Sum

IMG_1628

Nowadays it is quite hard to find handmade dim sum and that it is reasonable priced. At Shi Wei Xian HongKong Tim Sum, located inside a coffeeshop along Aljunied Avenue 2, a basket of dim sum starts from $3 here. Apparently the stall still handmade their dim sum and they are only open on weekends.

IMG_1616
Carrot Cake 3.8/5

The Carrot Cake ($3) is pan fried with a slight brown crisp on the exterior but inside is soft and moist. What I enjoy is the bits of lup cheong in the carrot cake, it gives it an additional boost in aroma for a rounder finish.

IMG_1618
Fried Yam Puff 4.5/5

IMG_1631

What I enjoyed most is their Fried Yam Puff ($3) or also known as Wu Kok. This is as good as any restaurant standard. Wearing a coat of light crispy batter, biting into it will reveal the char siew filling. Together with the fragrant yam, the combination is unbeatable.

IMG_1621
Bean Sauce Chicken Feet 4/5

I love my chicken feet and I have to say the Bean Sauce Chicken Feet ($3.20) is really well done. I enjoyed sucking off the chicken skin off the bone which has absorbed the delicious bean sauce.

IMG_1624
Beancurd Sheet Roll 4/5

Another delectable item on the menu is the Beancurd Sheet Roll ($3.20). Wrapping in thin beancurd roll, it is stuffed with lavish fish paste for a delightful enjoyment.

IMG_1630
Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun 3/5

I didn't quite like the Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun ($3.30). I find the rice roll is a bit on the thick side. As for the sauce, it is the sweet type instead of those Hong Kong style soy sauce type.

IMG_1626
Quail Egg Dumpling 3.5/5

Besides the regular items on the menu, the staff recommended me to try to some of the specials for the day. One of them is the Quail Egg Dumpling. It is like having a siew mai stuffed with a quail egg. Pretty interesting for a coffeeshop stall to create something from the norm.

IMG_1620
Spinach Siew Mai 4/5

The other special I tried is the Spinach Siew Mai. I was a bit surprise to see that the stall is willing to adapt with time and step out from their comfort zone. I really applauded the effort to keep themselves in time and hopefully renew their customer base, injecting a bit of hipster into their food.

Koung's Wan Tan Mee @ Geylang Lorong 21A - Popular Wanton Mee But Failed To Make Into My Favourite List

KoungsWantonMee15

I have been seeing quite a number of online coverage about Koung's Wanton Mee at Geylang. Since I was around the area on a Saturday afternoon, I decided to make a slight detour to check out the place. Located in a coffeeshop at the corner of Sims Avenue and Geylang Lorong 13, the coffeeshop is crowded with customers for their wanton mee during my visit.

KoungsWantonMee2
Wanton Mee 3.5/5

A plate of Wanton Mee starts from $4 here. You can choose to add more noodles and/or ingredients for extra cost. I decided to go for both, costing me $7 per plate. It comes with a few strands of vegetables, slices of char siew and egg noodles tossed in a homemade chilli sauce.

KoungsWantonMee9

KoungsWantonMee12

Personally I do not like the noodles here. It is the thicker and firmer type. I prefer the thin and springy type like those Hong Kong wanton mee. Putting that aside the other components like the char siew, chilli sauce and wanton actually make this a delectable plate of noodle, no wonder it has a great fan base all these years.

KoungsWantonMee1

While I didn't like the noodle, I have to applaud the fact that the stall makes their own char siew at the stall, wrapped their own wanton and dumpling, as well as frying their own chilli sauce.
