The Line Shop @ Shangri La Hotel

Most people may have heard of The Line restaurant at Shangri La Hotel. Not many may have heard of The Line Shop at the lower lobby of Shangri La Hotel that bakes fresh cakes and pastries daily. I only got to know of this place when I was specifically asked to purchase a birthday cake from here after 6pm and not to be late. The cakes and pastries are 50% off after 6pm and it get sold off very fast.

When I reached the place at 630pm, all the birthday cakes were sold out. I have to settle for the few miniature cakes and pastries that were left. I have to admit they are very good and nice. No wonder my friend wanted me to go all the way to purchase it.

Once Upon A Milkshake @ Maxwell Chambers

Once Upon A Milkshake aka OUAM provides patrons with premium ice cream milkshakes. Their milkshakes are produced by blending OUAM premium range of home-made ice cream with quality low fat milk.

Once inside the restaurant, you will feel like stepping into a children play house with miniature chairs and tables in a purple colour theme fairyland.

OUAM offers 10 different ice cream flavours for your milkshake. Accordingly to the waitress, the popular flavours are agent strawberry and chocolate truffle castle

Different ice cream flavours

Usually in a milkshake you will find that it is very sweet maybe due to the amount of sugar syrup in it and the difficulty in sucking up the milkshake with your straw. At OUAM a sip and I can taste the different in texture and sweetness. The texture was smooth and sweetness was just nice. We ordered the chocolate truffle castle and nutty peanut butler milkshakes.

Honeymoon Dessert (满记甜品) @ Bugis Junction

I was very excited when I chanced upon Honeymoon Dessert at Bugis Junction. I didn't realised one of the popular dessert chains in Hong Kong has expanded into Singapore. Now I do not need to fly to Hong Kong to have my favourite Mango Dessert. Currently for their opening, for every 2 mango dessert ordered you get a free mango pancake or pudding.

Shokudo Japanese Coffee House @ Bugis Junction

I wonder why the restaurant is called coffee house when it has a wide menu selections ranging from Japanese Western grills, burgers, pasta, pizza, Japanese curry rice, udon, sushi rolls and dessert? Anyway, I met up with my friends and we wanted to have dinner at Nando's. There was a long queue and we were too hungry to wait hence we walked over to Shokudo.

We ordered a main each and a pizza to share. Both the grilled chicken and tonkatsu curry omu rice were nice. It had a runny scrambled egg covering the rice. The Japanese curry was served separately and you can add it to your own preference. A very enjoyable dish with the rice, egg and curry sauce coming together.

Blanco Court Fish Bee Hoon. Fried Fish Soup @ Beach Road

Is this the original Blanco Court Fish Bee Hoon, Fried Fish Soup? No matter what this is the definitely one of the best I have eaten. My colleague brought me here for lunch after our conference at MBS. It is located along Beach Road at an old 80's setting coffeeshop at the corner of Aliwal Street. A queue was already formed when we reached the stall. We waited for about half an hour but it was worthwhile.

We ordered both the fried fish bee hoon and fried fish soup. The soup was thick and tasty with the sweetness of anchovies. One sip of the soup and I knew I am won over. The fish was also very fresh. One bite into the fried fish and how the fish meat broken down, we can tell the fish was freshly prepared on the day instead of using frozen fish meat.

What wows me more was the used of spinach and deep fried egg in the fish soup. The generous serving of spinach gave a good balance to the heavy flavouring of the soup. The fried egg was a surprise to me and my first having it for fish soup. It was a mouth drooling meal having different flavours coming together in an excellent bowl of fish soup.

To get here. The easiest way is to alight at Nicoll Highway MRT station. Follow the overhead walkway and it will bring you directly to Beach Road cutting across The Concourse building.

Alternative, you can alight at Bugis MRT station but the walk is a bit longer but you can do some sightseeing at Arab Street.

Jang Shou Korean BBQ @ Esplanade

Korean food are getting more popular with Singaporean especially after the popular 大长今 Korean drama. I always enjoy dining at a Korean restaurant because I will be overwhelmed by all the different side dishes they served.

My friends and I went to check out Jang Shou Korean BBQ at Esplanade. The restaurant is a bit difficult to locate as the main entrance is hidden in an alley between Thai Express and Glutton Bay Makansutra.

For the BBQ, you need to order at least 2 portions of meat. We went for the grilled beef rib meat and grilled chicken ribs. We also ordered kimchi casserole which had a lot of ingredients in it. A very nice dish to be eaten with the rice. Once the side dishes were served, the waiter/waitress served the meat and BBQ it for us. The food was excellent but expensive. Ventilation could be improved cos I left smelling of BBQ all over.

Sin Kee Famous Chicken Rice (新记鸡饭) @ Commonwealth Aveune

Sin Kee Chicken Rice used to be located at Commonwealth Avenue Food Centre second floor. It has moved to block 38 along the Commonweath Avenue along the main road with a larger and air conditioned premises. Very basic interior with blown up posters of awards and photograph taken with President Nathan.

The chicken indeed is still one of the best in town with its jelly like skin, tender and succulent meat. The chicken rice was also very fragrant even thought ginger was not used unlike the norm in most chicken rice stalls. Another important ingredient for chicken rice is the chili sauce which was excellent too. I have to say Sin Kee has it all, the chicken meat, rice and sauce.

Tien Siang Wanton Noodle @ Commonwealth Avenue Food Centre

I have been to Commonwealth Avenue Food Centre or commonly known as Queenstown Food Centre several times for dinner but not breakfast. It was my first time having breakfast here and I get to check out several stalls that were not opened during my visits in the evening.

After surveying around the food centre, I settled on the wanton noodle for breakfast. The wanton noodle here came with the normal wanton served in a bowl of soup as well as fried wanton. Nice to be able to enjoy the two different types of wanton in a single dish. The noodle and sauce was nice too. It was an enjoyable and hearty wanton noodle breakfast.

Red Hill Congee @ Redhill Food Centre

This congee stall is located directly opposite the 138 BBQ stingray stall. I was looking for something light to go with the stingray and chicken wings so I settled for the century egg congee from this stall. The congee was nice and smooth. The congee had cornflakes in it which came as a unique enjoyable surprise to me.

138 @ Redhill Food Centre

Whenever I visit Redhill Food Centre, I will usually order BBQ stringray from this stall. The stall only has three large numeric letters "138" as its stall name. It sells a variety of BBQ stuff such as stingray, sotong, chicken wings and satay. I like the stingray here because of the spicy samball chilli that was spread on the stingray and the chinchalok with onions dip for the stingray.

Eighteen Chefs @ Tiong Bahru Plaza

My friend and I were looking for lunch at Tiong Bahru Plaza and came upon this restaurant. I remembered reading about the restaurant owner being an ex drug addict and and worked at Jamie Oliver's restaurant, Fifteen before coming back to Singapore and opening his own restaurant.

The restaurant has a mix and match menu for baked rice or pasta beside the normal ala carte menu. We went for some fun in designing our own baked rice and pasta. A simple four steps whereby you just pick and tick the items on your order sheet.

Step 1 and 2

Step 3 and 4

My friend had the cheese baked rice with tangy tomato sauce and chicken slices while I have the cheese baked pasta with creamy white sauce and salmon. Cheesy it was but we were a bit disappointed with our dishes. The sauces were nice but the pasta and rice did not manage to absorb it, the taste was separated.

Ya Mei Shu Si (亚媚熟食) @ Beo Crescent Food Centre

I wrapped up my food print at Beo Crescent Food Centre with a traditional Chinese dessert at the price of only one dollar. Yes, one dollar dessert! It is quite hard to find such cheap and nice dessert in Singapore nowadays. The warmness and sweetness of the dessert completed my satisfying food experience at Beo Crescent where I rediscovered tradition in our hawker food.
